Many are head over heels about the passage of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill popularly known as anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

Rightly so because many feared activities of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and Transgender and Queer will contaminate Ghana’s cultural values.

Ghana’s Parliament made history with the passage of the controversial Bill on Thursday, February 8, 2024 after nearly three years of deliberation.

The Bill currently proscribes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activities and criminalises their promotion, advocacy and funding.

Persons caught in these acts would be subjected to six months to three-year jail term with promoters and sponsors of these acts bearing a three to five-year jail term.

But my confusion is with the words PROMOTION AND ADVOCACY in the Bill.

As a journalist, my core duty is to Educate, Entertain and Inform and all these things involves advocacy.

As a Global Citizen and an ardent promoter of Ghana’s cultural values, I am conflicted about how to combine these two without falling foul of the law.

So where do I draw the line in my advocacy of the rights of homosexuals and it would not be deemed criminal?

Will I be jailed or fine if I decide to tell a story of a homosexual or lesbian whose fundamental human right is being infringed upon?

As a neutral person in the discharge of my duties, I cannot be seen to be discrimination against anyone based on their sexuality.

Ghana’s culture frowns on homosexuality in any form, I agree but this should not be a barrier to press freedom.

Many including colleague journalists have not scrutinized the Bill properly because it has repercussions on our work.

In my opinion, this could mean denying the LGBTQ+ community the right to express their view on national issues in the media.

The portion about PROMOTION and ADVOCACY in the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill is vague and must be explained in clear terms.

I am an advocate for the poor and vulnerable in society and nothing not even this anti-LGBTQ+ Bill will stop me from doing my job professionally.

I rest my case!!!

A slap that is yours, you take it quickly. This is a popular Akan adage I have literally translated.

I am not surprised about the resignation of Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu because it was long overdue.

The experienced and affable Member of Parliament for Suame constituency in the Ashanti region should have seen it coming.

Immediately after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries, Mr. Mensah-Bonsu should have honourably resigned to enable the MPs who would be in the next Parliament elect new leaders.

But as usual, he wants to ‘chop the post’ till he exit Parliament in January 2025.

But NPP leadership to strengthen its base in Parliament vehemently disagreed with this position and decided to play a game.

The game was to use the media to push the Majority leader out of office since he was failing to see the writings on the wall.

AFENYO-MARKIN TO REPLACE OSEI-KYEI-MENSAH-BONSU AS MAJORITY LEADER

This story hit the Majority leadership like a bomb and close friends of Mr. Mensah-Bonsu like First deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Osei Owusu came out strongly to defend him.

But the plan of the party worked. It has sent shivers down the spine of those exiting Parliament but were unwilling to relinquish their leadership positions.

To calm tempers, the leadership quickly halted to decision to engage in dialogue. By which time the harm had already been caused.

The next step was for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to intervene; the last nail in the coffin.

These were all clear signs written on the wall but Mr. Mensah-Bonsu blinded by power refused to see.

After the meeting with the President, he finally resigned for Mr. Afenyo Markin to take over a Majority leader.

Many believe the Suame MP was force to step down and compensated with the position of a mere Chairman of the party’s Manifesto Committee.

For someone like Dr. Rasheed Draman, the Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs, the former Majority leader “was pushed out”.

As for NPP MP for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, he is still peeved and shocked about the resignation of Mr. Kyei Mensah-Bonsu.

In his view, it was a “submarine tactics” to remove Mr. Mensah-Bonsu in an honourable way.

But Mr. Mensah-Bonsu could have saved himself all these trouble if he has done the honourable thing rather than being forced or pushed out.

A political party seeking to retain power just 10 months to elections will not gamble with its leadership in Parliament.

As someone who is not seeking re-election, there is nothing to lose thus Mr. Mensah-Bonsu’s commitment to the cause of NPP is questionable.

I believe his place now is with the NPP campaign team to contribute his quota to the party.

Honourable Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu should have bowed out when the applause was loudest.

I rest my case!!!

A broken heart is a metaphor for the intense emotional stress or pain one feels at experiencing great loss or deep longing, according to Wikipedia.

But what I’m feeling now is higher than a broken heart following Ghana’s shambolic performance in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire.

Eish, Awurade!!! [God] I can see the last five minutes of the game in my minds eyes whenever I close my eyes.

I’m trying very hard not to think about how Ghana drew 2-2 with Mozambique in their last Group B game on Monday night at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé.

We were leading ooo and I was ready to jubilate when in the 91st minute, substitute Andre Ayew conceded a penalty for the Mambas to pull one back.

As if that was not enough, an experienced goalkeeper like Richard Ofori, who has seen zero minutes for Orlando Pirates inexplicably touched the ball which was heading to a goal kick but resulted in a corner.

And a hungry team like Mozambique which did not give up even when hope is lost scored the equalizer four minutes to the end of the game.

Now as usual, Ghanaians are doing the calculations hoping for a miracle.

The sport pundits claim Four 3rd place teams will qualify to the round of 16 and are confident Ghana can go through.

According to Joy Sport journalist, Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo, those two places are currently contested for by Algeria (2 points), Zambia (2 points), Ghana (2 points) and Cameroon (1 point). The other three teams all still have a game left, with Ghana having played all their games.

So in order for Ghana to qualify, Zambia must lose to Morocco, Algeria must also lose to Tanzania, and Cameroon must not beat The Gambia.

If that happens, Zambia will remain on 2 points, Algeria also remains on 2 points and Cameroon will also get up to 2 points with a draw.

Waaa look, such convoluted and confusing analysis. But how did we get here?

Just win a match and go the next stage too wahala. Eiii Black Stars.

I had a lot of reservations when I saw the players clad in Kente while going to the tournament. I just said KENTE DOES NOT PLAY FOOTBALL.

I am not a doomsday prophet but it has come to pass. Kente indeed does not play football.

For the technical team led by coach, Chris Hughton, I have nothing to say. It is obvious whatever they know works only on paper not on the football field.

From the performance of the Black Stars in this competition, it is obvious they are not committed to the national cause.

Majority of Ghanaians were hoping that, this current crop of players will end the 42-year-old AFCON trophy drought.

However, the Black Stars could not even make it to the knockout stages of the tournament. So when will Ghana get patriotic players whose goal will be on the trophy and not on money?

We the supporters don’t get the millions of dollars these players make when they win matches. All we want is victory to jubilate with my family and friends.

This simple task too, these 27 players and ‘Football People’ led by Ghana Football Association (GFA), President, Kurt Okraku cannot deliver?

Hmmm, for me I have resolved not to support a group of people whose only aim is to profit from the state.

The only Black Star I know now is in the Ghana flag and I hold it in high esteem.

I rest my case.

The issue of per diems for football supporters is subjective and can be a topic of debate.

Per diem is typically provided to cover expenses such as accommodation, meals, and incidental expenses incurred by individuals while traveling on behalf of an organization or group.

But the Government of Ghana has been lampooned for giving fans in Ivory Coast supporting the Black Stars in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) $400 each as per diem.

Majority of Ghanaians have argued that, $400 per diem is excessive given the economic conditions in the country and the shambolic performance of the senior national team, the Black Stars.

The concerns raised are justified and rightly so because the funds allocated for per diem could be better utilized elsewhere, such as supporting community initiatives or addressing more pressing needs.

Also, the lack of transparency in how the per diem is determined is a cause for concern. The misuse of public funds leads to skepticism among the general public.

But others are in favour of the $400 per diem noting that, it is necessary to ensure the comfort and well-being of the supporters in the Ivorian country.

They cited among other things the cost of living, accommodation and duration of travel as justifications for the amount.

But the question still remains that, should government continue to bare to cost of Ghanaian sports enthusiasts in the name of supporting national teams?

My answer is a big NO!

I think government should allocate public funds based on priorities that serve the public interest.

Using public funds to cover the travel costs of sports fans may raise questions about whether such expenditures align with broader public needs, especially if there are other pressing issues, such as healthcare, education, or infrastructure.

Also, while supporting sports and fostering a sense of national pride can have positive effects on society, the economic impact and benefits of using public funds for fan travel should be weighed against other potential investments that could generate long-term benefits.

Government operates within budget constraints, and decisions about funding sports fan travel should be made within the context of overall fiscal responsibility. It’s crucial to ensure that such expenditures are sustainable and justifiable.

Rather, I will prefer government encourages private sponsorship and fan contributions to cover travel expenses in future.

This approach could distribute the financial burden more broadly and demonstrate a collaborative effort between the government, private sector, and the public.

Government supporting fans travel can contribute to tourism and enhance the international image of Ghana.

However, ultimately, the decision to bear the cost of travel for sports fans is a complex one that involves weighing various factors.

Public opinion, economic considerations, and the potential benefits to national pride and international image all play a role in shaping government policy on this matter.

Public consultation and transparent decision-making processes can help ensure that the use of public funds aligns with the priorities and expectations of the citizens.

I rest my case!!!

I read with dismay the criticisms and vitriolic attacks on management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for donating 200 motorbikes to the Ghana Police Service.

I wonder if the critics especially on social media are being sarcastic or are dead serious about their actions.

I was taken aback when I listened to acclaimed energy experts including former Minister for Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor.

They argued that, ECG woes power producers so it cannot donate to the Police which has over the years been protecting its installations across the country.

Ei! how is owing power producers linked to a public good. Is Dr. Kwabena Donkor saying management did not take this into consideration before deciding to donate to the Police?

He [Dr. Donkor] should come again. As a former Power Minister, he should know protecting installations is also of paramount importance.

I can bet my last dollar on the Board Chairman of ECG, Keli Gadzekpo. He will not agree to this donation if it not worth it.

Mr. Gadzekpo had explained that, the support to the Police was to acknowledge and reward the hard work of police officers that protected ECG officials in their operations across the country.

This explanation is very tenable in my opinion given the massive theft at ECG installations which leads to incessant power cuts across the country.

These same people pooh poohing the donation will be the first to run to social media and complain about power cuts known in local parlance as ‘dumsor’ when the same institutions is thanking the gallant men in the security service for protecting their installations.

I see the gesture as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and a timely public good.

Ahead of the Christmas festivities, police visibility is needed and these motorbikes will help police personnel fight crime effectively.

I totally support the donation 100 percent and will urged ECG management to extended a similar gesture to other security service.

Kudos to ECG!

You have done a great public service.

I rest my case.

I was taken aback when an appeal made to the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Adutwum to reconsider the reporting date for first year Senior High School (SHS) students was blatantly ignored.

True to his word, the first year students are reporting today December 4, 2023 as reported by Adomonline.com

A peeved Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin on Thursday, November 30 urged the Education Ministry to reconsider its decision for fresh students to report to school on Monday, December 4, 2023 which is barely a week after their placement.

This, he explained is because majority of students are now picking prospectuses from the school’s enrolling them.

Mr. Bagbin has therefore summoned the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to appear before Parliament on Monday December 4 to reverse the decision.

In a quick rebuttal, a statement from the Education Ministry insists on the December 4 reopening date.

It explained that, the academic calendar was put out several weeks before now, therefore parents were supposed to make adequate preparations prior to the reopening.

WHAT! In this hand-to mouth economy you expect parents who can hardly make ends meet use just a week to mobilise resources for their wards? I beg to differ.

Though the Minister has said the first-year students who are unable to report on the first day will not automatically lose their slots, what is the rush?

And wait, the schedule affects both students on single and double-track system, as mentioned in the 2023/2024 academic calendar released by the Ghana Education Service (GES) which makes the issue worst.

I feel the Education Ministry is choking parents by forcing this date down their throat few weeks to Christmas.

Wait, are they going to pay schools fees for the just two or three weeks in school?

Oh Mr. Minister! Come again aaah ba

I rest my case.

It’s that time again – the political season is upon us, and predictably, politicians are employing their eloquent rhetoric to win over the people of Ghana.

This time around, the spotlight has shifted from the economy to education, a topic that some believe could have dire consequences depending on the outcome of the 2024 general elections.

The hot-button issue at the moment is the proposal to eliminate the Teacher’s Licensure Examination, a move that has sparked heated debates ever since former President John Mahama expressed his intention to do so if elected.

The leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) argues that the policy lacks careful consideration, pointing out that teachers already undergo rigorous examinations at every stage of their training.

Mahama contends that if graduates from Colleges of Education are adequately prepared, there should be no need for an additional exam before they can practice as teachers.

On the surface, this argument appears reasonable, as completing training at a Teaching College should ideally produce fully qualified teachers.

However, the recent widespread failures among candidates who took the Licensure Exams cast doubt on the viability of Mahama’s proposal.

Reports suggest that some candidates lack basic language skills, with some struggling to construct even a simple five-word sentence.

This raises concerns about the communication abilities of these prospective teachers.

Had these individuals not undergone the licensure exams, they might have entered the already struggling educational system.

Even the Registrar of the Teaching Council (NTC), Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, stated unequivocally that those who failed had no business being in classrooms as teachers.

Supporters of the exams argue that they ensure a certain standard of competency among teachers.

Despite this, Mahama’s proposal has found resonance, particularly among teachers who view the licensure exams as hindrances to their professional growth.

Opponents of the exams see them as an unnecessary burden on teachers who have already undergone extensive training and evaluation.

However, is it prudent to discard a policy that educationists deem a game-changer simply for political gain?

It’s worth noting that the licensure examination was introduced during the Mahama administration, so why the change of stance now?

Various professions, including lawyers, doctors, nurses, and engineers, undergo specialized exams, so why should teachers be an exception? On this point, I respectfully disagree with Mr. Mahama.

Let’s refrain from turning this valuable educational intervention – designed to evaluate a teacher’s ability to effectively educate students, especially in our public schools – into a political football. I rest my case!

Seto will not be able to participate in official competitions and training until the end of the year.

In the wake of the scandal, the swimmer also gave up his title of captain of the Olympic team.

Despite everything, Seto remains eligible for the Tokyo Olympics which will eventually take place.

An adventure

Earlier this month, Japanese magazine Shūkan Shinchō published photos of Daiya Seto, who is married and a father, entering a hotel room with a young lady.

The case has caused a scandal since that time since it is not about his wife, the diver Mabuchi Yuka.

Excuses

The 26-year-old spoke to the daily Hochi Sports:

How can I apologize? I asked myself the question, and I think my apologies are for continuing to swim, to regain the confidence of my family who have been deeply hurt by my irresponsible behaviour.

His gesture will also cost him dearly financially since, according to ESPN, he agreed to end his agreement with his sponsor, All Nippon Airways.

The outbreak of the deadly Coronavirus in China has brought a lot of fear and panic across the globe. This has accounted for many deaths across the globe.

Surprisingly, the Coronavirus is not rampant in Africa. What is Africa doing uniquely that China, Europe and Great America have not done?

Is it good measures put in place? Or good medical facilities? Or the fact that we have good medical doctors.

The answer to the question is none of the measures and facilities enumerated above.

In my humble opinion, the answer is God. It is the presence of God and his unmeasurable grace that is keeping Africa from this deadly Coronavirus.

China, Europe and America are well developed, yet they have gradually sidelined the God who brought them this far. The God who gave them the wisdom, Knowledge, skills and the insight to the great things they have done has been totally eliminated in some cases.

China has rejected God, in some cases Christians are beaten, arrested, imprisoned and in worse cases killed. China taught they have arrived and does not need God. Coronavirus is a return to God.

In Europe and other parts of the globe, churches are closed down to the extent that in some schools you cannot even mention the name of God.

People take money and buy churches and turn them into night clubs and social centres. Where is the God whom you once worshiped? The God you introduced to the people of Africa has been totally forgotten. God through the Coronavirus is saying my people should return to me.

Our approach towards the curbing of this pandemic confirms that indeed God is relegated to the background.

We are only looking at the physical measures- it is good to wash our hands, use the alcohol based hand sanitiser, avoid shaking of hands and the like- but we should remember that it is the Lord that heals.

Exodus 15:26 – If we will return to God and acknowledge him as the Lord and observe his commandments, He says l will not bring any disease on you because l am the Lord that heals your disease.

Africa is not hard hit because the God that Europeans brought has been embraced. In as much as l agree that there are fake and stomach satisfaction pastors, there are equally genuine men and women of God standing in prayers to protect the territorial borders of Africa in addition to the physical prudent measures put in place.

God is bringing revival around the globe amidst this Coronavirus outbreak.

God will surely raise a David to kill this Goliath Virus.

Africa, China, Europe, America, Asia and every corner of the globe should return to God.

Revelation 2:5: We should remember where we have fallen, repent and turn to the Lord.

We should remember that: beyond every physical infection described as pandemic, there is a spiritual agent.

That agent cannot be dealt with, with alcohol hand sanitiser but by prayer.

Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your on understanding in all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your path.

China return to God

Europe return to God

America return to God

Africa return to God

Psalm 127:1: Except the Lord built the house, the builder built in vain.

Coronavirus a return to God.

Thanks.

Your Servant and Friend.

Since 2012, the John Dumelo foundation has been paying fees for brilliant but needy students in institutions all over the country. Yesterday we successfully paid fees for over 50 Legon students who would have deferred their course due to non-registration. We are committed to doing more soon. Mr Dumelo said.

People are indeed right to be untune because it beats the imagination of anybody to learn that a structure would be built for public use but left to decay for months, sometimes years because it has not been commissioned.

The lame excuse has always been that they are waiting for the President, Minister or Municipal/District Chief Executive to commission the project before the facility could be used.

There have been many instances across the country where a public place of convenience, health facility and markets among others are left to rot because the one to commission the facility is not yet ready.

The latest of such annoying things that could only be prevalent in Africa is a newly constructed six-unit classroom block built to create a congenial atmosphere for pupils and teachers of the Nabu D/A Basic School in the Oti region.

The building, which comes with quarters for teachers and other structures, was among eight other projects constructed under the Social Investment Fund to improve education and healthcare in the area.

But, like we always aimlessly do, the completed six-unit classroom block with quarters for teachers remains under lock and key because the Assembly has failed to commission the project.

The newly constructed facility wasting away for more than a year because it has not been commissioned

The facility has, thus, been left to waste away for more than a year. This is creating an upsetting situation for the school authorities who have had to practically force the pupils to sit on blocks to learn in a nasty classroom.

Some of the pupils, according to the report, have also been compelled to study under trees when a newly constructed classroom facility is starring at them.

Head teacher of the school, Mr Paul Iddrisu, lamenting to Adom News, said “there were high hopes the problem would be solved upon completion; they have been locked because they have not been commissioned. I will, therefore, urge authorities to, as matter of urgency, commission the building to offer a conducive environment for teaching and learning to take place,” he added.

This undue delay for more than a year clearly depicts backward thinking, is senseless and indeed annoying. Our authorities should urgently nip this canker in the bud.

All the necessary planning, including budgeting and date of commissioning, should be put in place so that projects are not completed and left to rot for months because someone is waiting for a ‘big man’ to commission them.

Many people made it a point to watch the much publicised 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) which also coincided with the 20th Anniversary of the event.

All was well until after Gilbert Abeiku Santa mounted the podium to announce winner of the ‘Reggae Dancehall Artiste of the Year.’

“And the winner is Stonebwoy,” he said.

That momentous announcement was special because Stonebwoy was picking the award for record fifth time. The events that followed that announcement are better left untold.

The reactions of Shata Wale and Stonebwoy as captured on television screens perhaps tell the story better for those who watched the event on television. Both artistes, for lack of better word had been sitting on tenterhooks before the announcement of the winner.

Members of the Bhim Nation fraternity could not wait and joined their leader, who meritoriously was adjudged the ‘King’ of Reggae Dancehall in Ghana, on stage to pick his award.

Then came the group from the other divide-the army of Shatta Movement who trooped to the podium, leaving tongues wagging as patrons watched on in awe-there is confusion.  Yes there is pandemonium!

It then turned fight for all and manager of Stonebwoy, Black Cedi was seen exchanging blows with some fans of Shatta Wale. And suddenly the newly crowned ‘Dancehall Artiste of the Year’ pulled a pistol.

Free for all fight on stage

From the awards ball to the police cells; that’s the long and short of what started as a love story. Both Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale were granted bail to the tune of GH¢50,000.00 after pleading not guilty to offensive conduct and display of weapon in public place without authority when they appeared before an Accra District Court.

The duo were later handed with indefinite ban by Charterhouse.

Music in our part of the world can hardly pass without ‘beef’ and ‘diss’.

As humans, there certainly would be disagreements over views and scuffle which can even lead to ‘beefs’. Artistes could use the ‘beefs’ to express their opinions but they should be guarded so they do not degenerate into physical attacks.

Saturday’s brouhaha couldn’t pass without a look at security in general at the Dome.

How secured and protected were patrons at the event?

A school of thought is that Stonebwoy felt unsecured or threatened by the presence of Shatta Wale and his ‘militants’ on stage.

Security at the VGMA was porous and going forward, security issues should not be taken for granted.

I wonder how Stonebwoy managed to carry a gun into the auditorium to the extent that he pulled it on stage at the blind side of security operatives. That’s a million question begging for answers.

Did that mean people, by inference, managed to enter the event ground with guns unceremoniously?

We have only one Ghana. Imagine what would have happened if there were gunshots at the VGMAs. Your guess is as good as mine. Chaotic!

Let’s be mindful of our security, especially on occasions like the VGMAs and all other events which bring people together.

The police say blocking a road for funerals and other social events is illegal

Imagine having an emergency at home and driving on top speed to get to the nearest health centre only to bump into a road block with many dressed in white and enjoying bottles of bear because someone is celebrating his/her birthday and has blocked the road.

Very nauseating I guess. What will rile you even the
more is when there is no road sign to forewarn drivers; you virtually drive
into them and gets trapped.

In some cases, frustrated drivers are compelled to use alternative unfamiliar routes because of someone’s lawlessness. It is simply unfair.

In other cases, these road blocks cause needless
traffic and waste the precious time of people who have nothing to do with a
funeral or party being organised in the middle of a road.

It defies logic why some people choose to block a
section of a main and busy road to organise funerals, weddings, naming
ceremonies and birthday parties when many event grounds abound.

It is said that the youth in communities that are fond of engaging in such stomach-churning acts take pride in organising events in the middle of a road. In fact, you may lose respect if you are unable to block a road to organise an event.

Some have even claimed that some officials at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) are complicit in these illegal acts because they give the permission for a road to be blocked for a social event.

This is clearly backward thinking and total disregard
for the laws of the country. Areas notorious for blocking roads include James
Town, Korle-Bu, Sukura Zongo, Banana Inn, Korle Gonno, Abossey Okine, La and
Kaneshie.

Though the Ghana Police Service has made it clear on
countless occasions that it is illegal to block a section of a road for social
events, the practice keeps going on. In fact, rarely is anybody arrested and the
road cleared to serve as deterrent to others.

Time
to turn the tide

The time to stop this is now. It is necessary to do
so because a calamity could befall a whole community because someone has
blocked a passage way for the Ghana National Fire Service to douse a raging
fire in a Compound House.

Someone could also lose a relative who needs urgent medical attention because a busy road has been blocked for a party. The time to waste to meander for alternative route could cost a life.

The AMA and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department
of the Ghana Police Service should lead the charge to stop this canker.

These two key agencies should crack the whip on the perpetrators of these acts as a part of an elaborate campaign to stop this practice.

National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu (2nd L) and Rev Fr Campbell at the Christ the King Church

On Sunday April 21,
2019, two key events happened in Ghana and Sri Lanka that elicited mixed
feelings.

Feelings of excitement
and hope in one instance, and a feeling of sadness and hopelessness in the
other.

It is trite knowledge that Ghana is a secular State. This means the
State is or purports to be officially neutral in matters of religion,
supporting neither religion nor irreligion.

Religious pluralism, thus, thrives with thousands of sects that profess to believe in what they believe in without any hindrance.

Though Ghana has for many years enjoyed relative peace with the citizenry existing harmoniously irrespective of religious differences, the Sunday gesture by the Chief Imam was one in a million.

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu on Easter Sunday visited the Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra to worship with them.

No need to
be mistaken, he was not there to enjoy Easter as some initially thought. He was
there for a bigger assignment.

Spokesperson for the Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shuaib, is
best placed to explain the rationale: “As an icon of interfaith
dialogue, interfaith harmony, interfaith friendship, he decided to stretch a
hand of friendship to a church. That is a symbolic gesture to send a certain
strong message for the possibility of Muslims and Christians to live in peace
on the foundation of mutual respect, mutual cooperation and mutual solidarity.”

That was not only historic, but showed how deep the National Chief Imam is and his contribution to fostering peace and harmony in the country.

While we are basking in
the glory of entrenching our religious tolerance and living peacefully, others
are being slaughtered heartlessly elsewhere.

Sri
Lanka

On Easter Sunday, over 200 people lost their lives in Sri Lanka leaving the citizens in a state of shock and confusion.

Three churches
were targeted.

According to Sri
Lanka’s Minister of Defence, Ruwan Wijewardene, the Sunday bombings were in
response to a recent attack on mosques in New Zealand.

“The preliminary investigations have revealed that what happened in Sri Lanka (on Sunday) was in retaliation to the attack against Muslims in Christchurch,” he told Parliament.

This is indeed
sad. Our hearts and condolences to the bereaved families.

It is our hope that the world will one day learn from Ghana and stop the needless slaughtering of innocent souls in the name of religion.
