The Catholic Bishops Conference has threatened to punish the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming election if President Akufo-Addo refuses to sign the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into Law.

This stance is maintained despite concerns raised by the Finance Ministry, warning that such a move could jeopardize Ghana’s chance of receiving GHS3 billion from the World Bank.

In the 5-page document, the Ministry explained that “for 2024 Ghana will lose US$600 million Budget support and US$250 million for the Financial Stability Fund.”

“This will negatively impact Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and exchange rate stability as these inflows are expected to shore the country’s reserve position.

Over the next six years, the Ministry explained that “Ghana is likely to lose US$3.8 billion in World Bank Financing.”

But the Catholic Bishops insist the bill must become law.

According to Very Rev Fr Clement Kwasi Adjei though concerns over whether or not to incarcerate suspects are welcome, “it doesn’t mean that the LGBTQ activities, we should support it.”

“We will speak and we will continue to keep speaking against what we think is wrong. If the President refuses to sign, and you know the implication for him [Nana Akufo-Addo] and his party. [I’m referring to] elections, voting… these things must not be hidden. We work in the villages, people are listening.

It comes in the wake of warnings by the United States of dire implications for the Ghanaian economy after Parliament enacted a Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.

Already, some human rights groups in Ghana have threatened to head to the Supreme Court if President Akufo-Addo gives assent to the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill passed on Wednesday.

On the back of all these, the Finance Ministry is urging the President to engage stakeholders including faith-based organisations to communicate the bill’s implications.

Aside from that, it called for effective engagement with conservative countries including Arab countries and China.

“This could help trigger resources to fill in the potential financing gaps to be created.”

The Coalition of Muslim Organisations, Ghana (COMOG), has said Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia should be worried about President Akufo-Addo’s posture on the  anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

According to the Chairman on Media and Research Committee, Mohammed Shamsudeen Shaibu, Akufo-Addo is ruining the political fortunes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer with his actions.

Mr Shaibu made these comments on Adom FM Burning Issues following Akufo-Addo’s announcement to await a Supreme Court ruling on the bill which is being challenged before making a decision.

Speaking at the New Year greetings event with members of the Diplomatic Corps at Peduase, the President emphasised Ghana’s commitment to upholding its Human Rights record.

However, Mr Sahibu has questioned why the ruling of the apex court must determine whether or not Akufo-Addo will assent to the bill.

In his view, the majority of Ghanaians are in support of the bill, hence the President’s delay tactic is unnecessary.

“Across the house, we never saw any MP against the bill so why should the president delay and consider someone is going to court on what basis?

“Is it to derail or unnecessarily delay the process so that he will not sign before he leaves office? Vice President Bawumia should be worried because his political fortunes is being ruined by the actions of Akufo-Addo,” he stated.

On February 28, 2024, Parliament unanimously approved the bill that criminalises LGBTQ+ activities, as well as their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Those found guilty could face a jail term ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while those promoting and sponsoring the act could face a jail term between 3 to 5 years.

Despite intense call for Akufo-Addo immediately sign the bill, he says it is yet to reach his desk.

The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has expressed his deep concerns about the impact of his role on the safety and well-being of his family.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr Mahama, who has been at the helm of ECG, shed light on the difficulties he faces in managing the responsibilities of his position.

The Managing Director disclosed that his life has been threatened, and the safety of his children and family has been jeopardized since assuming the role.

“Doing this job is not the easiest thing, your life is being threatened, and to put the lives of your children and family in limbo it’s not fair. And these are things that have been happening to me,” Mahama revealed during the interview.

The Managing Director further emphasized that the challenges he faces are often exacerbated when false accusations are made against him or the power distribution company.

He urged the public to verify facts before making accusations, stating, “… it is always when people are complaining that somebody has taken an amount of money or something has been moved, it is not fair. Get the facts right.”

Expressing his frustration, Mr Mahama highlighted the growing trend of spreading misinformation in the country, emphasising the need for responsible reporting.

“We’re getting to a point in this country, where waking up in the morning and brandishing things that are not true is the order of the day, and that is not fair,”he stated.

His frustration comes amidst incessant power outages that are being experienced in the country. Ghanaians have asked ECG to come out with a power outage timetable for all and sundry to know that ‘dumsor’ [power cuts] has returned.

Meanwhile, Mr Mahama has given the assurance that issues that resulted in the recent power outages have been resolved, hence, the intermittent power cuts will be a thing of the past.

The Sissala East Municipal Director of Health Services in the Upper West region, Clifford Veng, has expressed worry over the lack of a mortuary for the Sissala East Municipal Hospital.

He stated that the lack of a mortuary at the facility forces authorities to keep corpses in undesignated places at the facility sometimes in same wards with patients and staff.

Clifford Veng disclosed this during the 2023 health performance conference of the Sissala East municipality at Tumu.

“When death occurs at the municipal hospital, the dead are supposed to be separated from the living immediately but in the case of our municipality, the situation is different.

“Corpses stay over 24 hours in undesignated areas pending the time relative will come for them,” he revealed.

Sissala East Municipal Director of Health Services Clifford Veng

He added, “When there is a death, some families need to preserve the deceased for some time to allow them to prepare adequately for the funeral rites hence the need for mortuary services with its benefits in the municipality.”

The 2023 Sissala East Municipal Health Sector performance review was held on the theme; ‘Of fostering collaboration: engaging stakeholders in reducing maternal and perinatal mortalities through a resilient healthcare system.’

IMANI Africa’s latest edition of social media analysis spanning from February 11th to February 26th, 2024, has revealed intriguing insights into public sentiment towards the two major political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The survey is a comprehensive study of over 10,000 tweets, Facebook posts, TikTok and YouTube videos, Instagram posts, podcasts, and news websites.

The report suggests that the leader of the NDC, John Mahama, has experienced a reduction in negative sentiments even though his reach on non-social media web sources has seen a significant drop.

Below are some details of the report:

Performance Comparison: Analyzing the social media performance of the presidential candidates, it’s observed that former President Mahama experienced a reduction in negative sentiments by about 8.27% during the period.

However, his reach on non-social media web sources saw a significant drop of 6.78%. On the other hand, Vice President Bawumia saw a notable 14% increase in social media mentions, accompanied by a significant rise in negative mentions by 7%.

Growing Interactions: The report also establishes the fact that despite a few fluctuations, the number of interactions is steadily growing.

The NDC is gradually expanding its audience on social media, with more mentions and interactions growth compared to NPP/Bawumia-related content, although the absolute numbers still favor the NPP.

Stable Positive Sentiment: Despite the period under review, the positive public opinion and sentiment remain stagnant at 10%, with an equal proportion between NPP and NDC mentions.

Both parties registered exactly 10.22% positive sentiment out of the total sentiments analyzed, indicating no significant upsurge in positivity triggered by any events or pronouncements from either candidate.

Rising Negative Sentiment: However, negative sentiment towards both party candidates increased during this period.

Negative mentions of the NPP experienced a higher percentage increase, rising from around 21% to just over 28%, while negative sentiment towards the NDC saw a more modest increase of approximately 4%.

This suggests a general increase in negativity towards both parties, with the NPP bearing the brunt of growing negative mentions.

Impact of Ministerial Reshuffle: Despite a ministerial reshuffle during the period, it did not significantly alter the level of positivity towards the NPP but rather triggered negative sentiments overall.

This raises questions about public faith in politicians and their ability to influence public opinion positively.

Dominance in Social Media Mentions: Despite the challenges, the NPP maintained its lead in social media mentions.

The ministerial reshuffle did not diminish the NPP’s dominance in mentions and social reach, with more commentators scrutinizing their policies and the messaging of their presidential candidate compared to the NDC.

The analysis underscores the dynamic nature of public sentiment on social media and its potential impact on political discourse and electoral outcomes.

As Ghana’s election approaches, understanding these trends becomes increasingly vital for political strategists and candidates seeking to engage effectively with the electorate.

The Ministry of Finance has urged President Akufo-Addo not to sign the recently passed Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into law.

In a press release issued on Monday, March 4, the Finance Ministry cautioned that such action could lead to severe repercussions on the country’s financial support from international organisations like the Bretton Woods Institutions.

The statement highlighted concerns that the expected US$300 million financing from the First Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (Budget Support), currently awaiting Parliamentary approval, might not be disbursed if the bill is signed into law.

Additionally, ongoing negotiations on the Second Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (Budget Support), amounting to US$300 million, could be suspended.

The Ministry emphasized that these potential outcomes could result in a significant loss of financial resources, leading to a financing gap in the 2024 budget.

To address these challenges, the Ministry called upon the President to engage with religious bodies to discuss the implications of signing the bill and to establish a robust coalition and framework for supporting key development initiatives.

“The Presidency may have a structured engagement with local conservative forces such as religious bodies and faith-based organisations to communicate the economic implications of the passage of the ‘Anti-LGBTQ’ Bill and to build a stronger coalition and a framework for supporting key development initiative that is likely to be affected.”

It also added that “the President may have to defer assenting to the Bill until the court rules on the legal issues tabled by key national stakeholders (CSOs and CHRAJ).”

On February 28, 2024, Parliament approved a bill criminalizing LGBTQ activities and prohibiting their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Under the legislation, individuals convicted of such acts could be sentenced to 6 months to 3 years in prison, while those promoting or sponsoring such activities could face 3 to 5 years behind bars.

The Bill’s passage has sparked criticism from various stakeholders, including Virginia Evelyn Palmer, the Ambassador of the United States to Ghana.

Former Oti Regional Minister, Joshua Makubu says he was a bit surprised about his removal from office.

He indicated no concerns were raised about him during his tenure in office as a regional minister for redress.

He therefore finds it strange when the President told him he could not be part of his government after the ministerial reshuffle on the 14th of February.

Joshua Makubu was speaking to Joy News’s Peter Senoo two weeks after his removal from office.

Meanwhile, some residents in the Oti Region have commended President Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffling.

They said the removal of Joshua Makubu as Oti Regional Minister will provide equal opportunities for others to serve and bring the needed development.

President Akufo-Addo last month relieved some Ministers and Deputy Ministers of their portfolios as part of strategies to strengthen governance.

Mr. Makubu was removed and was replaced by Daniel Machator.

Two fatalities have been confirmed following a recent accident in Akumadan, Offinso North Constituency of the Ashanti Region, on Saturday.

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) verified the casualties, attributing the incident to a truck transporting a cement mixer along the Nkenkensu road towards the Local Government University construction site.

Reports suggest that the cement mixer, inadequately secured, dislodged unexpectedly, colliding with an oncoming Ssangyong bus with registration number AS 9880-12.

Regrettably, the collision claimed the lives of two individuals, who remain unidentified at this time.

Prompt emergency response teams were deployed to the scene to manage the aftermath and provide assistance to any injured parties.

Authorities have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, particularly focusing on compliance with safety regulations during the transportation of the cement mixer.

Offinso North District NADMO coordinator Elijah Mamoah confirmed the incident, highlighting that it marks the second accident in the constituency within the past 72 hours.

The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has blamed the widespread power outages (dumsor) experienced in parts of the country on Sunday evening to a fault on an equipment at the Mallam substation which occurred at 20:38pm.

In a statement, GIDCo explained the situation resulted in interruption in power supply to some customers in the western part of Accra, Winneba and Takoradi.

However, engineers quickly isolated the faulted equipment for further investigation.

“Restoration of supply to affected customers started immediately. As at 22:30h, power
supply to most of the affected customers had been restored. For areas without power
supply, engineers are working tirelessly to restore power once the faulted equipment
is fixed,” the statement noted.

National President of the Actor Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas has confirmed the death of actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu.

In a post on Instagram, Mr Rollas revealed that the actor, who had been unwell for months, died of cardiac arrest.

The actor was unable to survive and passed away on Saturday, March 2. He was 62.

“Sad day for Actors Guild of Nigeria. Kate Henshaw lost her mother earlier today and Mr Ibu suffered cardiac arrest according to his manager of 24 years, Mr Don Single Nwuzor. I announce with a deep sense of grief that Mr Ibu didn’t make it. May his soul rest in peace,” Mr Rollas’ post read.

In October 2023, family of the actor revealed that he had been battling some health issues and had undergone multiple surgeries.

He had earlier made a passionate appeal and announced a fundraiser to offset his medical bills at a Lagos hospital.

Mr Ibu had said he had been hospitalised for two weeks because of a “strange and dangerous illness”.

The actor later celebrated his birthday, hopeful of a speedy recovery.

However, on 6 November 2023, Mr Ibu’s leg was amputated, barely a month after he solicited prayers and financial assistance from his fans.

Announcing the leg amputation on the actor’s Instagram page, his family said the amputation was to increase his chances of recovery.

They said the development was complex but necessary.

On 17 December 2023, the family of the 62-year-old actor further revealed the reason behind his inability to be flown abroad for additional treatment.

The family explained in a statement that doctors deemed him ‘Not Fit To Fly,’ rendering it challenging to arrange his departure for advanced medical treatment due to the airlines’ refusal to transport him.

According to the family, the cause of the illness was not diabetes but a persistent clotting of blood in Mr Ibu’s leg, stemming from diseased blood vessels, along with other health challenges that posed a significant risk to his life.

Mr Ibu was discharged in January and was seen with Nollywood actor, Ken Erics who visited him.

The Enugu-born actor, prior to his death, featured in more than 200 Nollywood movies.

They include Mr Ibu (2004), Mr Ibu and His Son, Coffin Producers, Husband Suppliers, International Players, Mr Ibu in London (2004), Police Recruit (2003), 9 Wives (2005), Ibu in Prison (2006) and Keziah (2007).

A prominent figure within the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has voiced his reservations regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, recently passed by Parliament.

Expressing his concerns, Mr Otchere-Darko criticised the perceived severity of the bill, arguing that it fails to align with the needs of the Ghanaian populace and the fundamental rights of individuals.

He advocated for a public discourse to weigh the merits and drawbacks of the proposed legislation, highlighting the importance of engaging in an open dialogue on such sensitive matters.

Below is the post

“Ghana’s Parliament, in which is vested the sovereign will of the people, has democratically passed a harsher anti-LGBTQ Bill. Yes, democratically! In fact the threat of being unseated for standing for the rights of gays, etc, certainly created its own culture of silence in the House! But, it is the decision of Parliament and one which enjoys huge popular support in the country. The world must understand that.

“But, Ghanaians must also understand that it comes with consequences. Choices have consequences. We expect the media and the politicians to be fair to the people by letting them know the pros and cons of this decision to impose stiffer penalties against gays, etc. We also expect those who believe the Bill is constitutionally wrong to do what is right and go to court.”

“That is democracy! Our institutions of democracy are still strong and alive. Let’s have faith in our democracy. Let’s respect the choices we make and their consequences and believe in the process. Ghana remains a sovereign state, with cultural norms that cannot be wished away but must be respected.

“I still believe, though, that we can balance our traditional family values with our traditional values of tolerance and diversity. That’s the Ghanaian way. The Ghanaian culture. The Ghanaian spirit. Our history. Our DNA. That is Ghanaian.”

Veteran Nigerian actor, John Okafor popularly known as Mr Ibu has passed on.

The actor died in a hospital in Lagos state on Saturday, March 2.

According to family sources, the actor has been on life support after he underwent a second surgery for his ailment recently.

The family source said that his blood pressure has been over 200 after he had the surgery and that efforts were being made to stabilize it before he sadly passed away this evening.

The actor battled with constant clotting of blood on his leg (diseased blood vessels) and other health challenges for years.

In October 2023, he came out publicly to seek financial assistance to treat his ailment. There were plans to fly him abroad for further medical care but that plan was aborted by his doctors who believed he wasn’t fit to fly.

During the course of his treatment, his leg was amputated in November 2023.

The actor is survived by his wife and children. He was 62 years old.

The veteran actor was very famous for his sterling interpretation of humorous roles in movies.

The Volta Regional Police Command has confirmed the death of an inmate.

According to the Police, the inmate was found hanging in the Akatsi cell.

The deceased, Simon Doeve, accused of murder was going through committal at the Akatsi District Court and was remanded to reappear on March 13. But, he hanged himself ahead of the court date.

The police suspect no foul play as there were no signs of assault.

His body has been deposited at the Ho Teaching Hospital for preservation and autopsy.

Police brief said Doeve was remanded into police custody on February 12, 2024, but hanged himself on the same day.

Investigation revealed that at about 0350 hours, the counter non-commissioned officer sergeant Gideon Ndsuga visited the cells and detected the accused person was not part of the inmates.

When he inquired, he was told Doeve was in the washroom, only to find him hanging from the fan hook on the ceiling.

The brief said the family of the deceased was informed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Andrews Boadu Ekumah, the Regional Police Commander.

Afterwards, the family was allowed into the cells to identify him.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for South Dayi Constituency, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has rendered a sincere apology to former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan.

This was after he alleged Gyan’s missed penalty against Uruguay in the quarterfinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 2010 was due to his political affiliation to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Ghana’s potential to become the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals was dashed when Gyan failed to convert the penalty.

Dafeamekpor’s comments come shortly after the ex-Black Stars captain accepted to serve on Dr Mahamadu Bawumia’s manifesto campaign team for the 2024 elections.

However, after receiving backlash for his comments made about Ghana’s all-time top scorer, Dafeamekpor has moved quickly to issue an apology to Gyan.

In a statement posted on X, Dafeamekpor stated, “The Black Stars and other National Teams have iconically rallied & carried our passions, dreams and aspirations for glory to the world. Upon reflection & calls from people like Kenpong, I retract & unreservedly apologize to Asamoah Gyan, for my comments.”

Gyan, who officially retired from football in June 2023, boasts a remarkable career, having scored a record 51 goals for Ghana.

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu has expressed his excitement over the recent passage of the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

On February 28, after nearly three years of deliberation, Parliament finally passed the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

The Bill imposes a prison sentence of up to three years on anyone convicted of identifying as LGBTQ+. It also imposes a maximum five-year jail term for advocacy or funding by LGBTQ+ groups.

This portion of the Bill, among others, has stirred contention from some civil society groups and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), who argue that it violates basic human rights.

But despite these criticisms, Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu believes that the passage of the Bill is a step in the right direction.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on March 2, the Spokesperson for the Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, said they [Muslim community] were elated by the news because the Bill will preserve family values.

“I can say without any equivocation that the Chief Imam was relatively joyful about the passing of this bill because he has fully been briefed about what we are going through with respect to the evolvement of this LGBTQ+ phenomenon in our country and the attempt to really universalise it and make it something normal and something acceptable.

“And as somebody who is the leader of Muslims in this country, he could not actually give any support to such matter to be allowed.

“For us, it is a moral issue, it is something that also goes to the very heart of the protection of the family which in the Muslim understanding of things is the property of God. It is the smallest unit of society into which every single human being is born,” he said.

He clarified that anything that undermines the family system will not get their support.

“Any practice that seeks to undermine the survival of the family must truly be condemned. For us, it is reprehensible, abominable, and objectionable. So Chief Imam is so happy,” he added.

He commended legislators for their steadfastness despite the countless objections and battles the bill faced.

When asked about concerns that the Bill violates basic human rights, the spokesperson said laws are enacted to benefit the people and human society; therefore, any law that threatens the purity of society is injurious and must not be viewed as an academic exercise.

“It is not an academic issue, it is not a human rights issue but it is about survival. Any law that is harmful to society, society must think together within our wisdom and that is what identifies us and distinguishes us from other nations,” he added.

Former Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and lawyer, Freddie Blay, has recounted his traumatic arrest and imprisonment years ago.

According to him, it was an awful and painful experience.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli, the ace politician narrated the reason behind his arrest, saying it was not valid because he did not commit any offence to warrant his incarceration.’

“Honestly, I did nothing that should have gotten me even arrested. What happened was that they were looking for Kweku Baako and a few friends who they thought were a danger and a rival movement to the then Rawling’s government, which was taking over power from this country. Kweku Baako had come to visit me because the place was becoming a bit dangerous, and he’s been advised to leave town.

“He wanted to go to Abijan by road. So, he asked my permission, and I said, Why not? I have a house in Takoradi; he can go and live there and continue his journey. Not that they were looking for him officially, but he really felt threatened,” he reminisced.

Unfortunately, Mr. Blay’s kind gesture contributed to his apprehension because he was suspected of being an accomplice of Kweku Baako’s team.

“I was kept at the barracks for about two to three months and sent to Ho Prisons, where I stayed for about seven more months, and then brought to Usher Fort for about a month or two. Afterwards, I was freed. I was happy to be freed because the experience was bad.”

“They gave me severe beatings, and fortunately, they saw Kweku Baako in my house, arrested him, and started shooting in the house. At that time, my wife, who was then my girlfriend, and we were getting closer to marriage had a miscarriage there and then because of the way they were shooting around. They carried myself and Kweku Baako back to Accra and put us in custody just because he was my friend and had been kept in my house,” Mr. Blay further narrated.

As to whether he was told what crime Kweku Baako had committed, the former NPP chairman replied, “No.”

However, the trauma he encountered never deterred his ambitions towards politics, as he strived to be one of the most renowned politicians in Ghana.

Freddie Blay became the chairman of the NPP in 2018.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah has threatened to lead a mammoth demonstration over erratic power supply known in local parlance as ‘dumsor‘.

According to him, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have failed to fulfil his request for a regional breakdown of planned maintenance which is affecting the power supply.

Mr Mensah explained he has already engaged the two institutions on the matter.

However, he is yet to receive any positive feedback.

The Minister has vowed he will not hesitate to proceed with his action if the delay continues.

Simon Osei-Mensah

“I met them (ECG and GRIDCo) and requested a regional breakdown on power distribution so that the general public can be informed. We experienced a similar situation in 2017 and we can’t go through it again. I have still not received it and if they don’t give it to me, I will embark on a demonstration,” he threatened in an interview on Accra-based UTV.

Parts of the country for the past weeks have been experiencing erratic power outages but ECG has failed to effectively communicate to the public.

The Minority in Parliament, has urged ECG to release a timetable for the outages to allow citizens better organize their daily activities.

Yapei-Kusawgu MP, John Jinapor who is also the Minority spokesperson on Energy has stated that, the government is facing financial challenges which have hindered its ability to procure sufficient fuel to power certain thermal plants.

However, ECG has insisted that Ghanaians do not need a schedule because the power outages were caused by a maintenance issue and not due to a lack of fuel or generation capacity.

Chief of Gomoa Buduburam, Nana Kojo Essel II, has said he is tired of burying bodies since the establishment of the Liberian camp.

His comment follows the recent demolition exercise at Buduburam.

According to him, even during the demolition, they found some decomposed bodies and skeletons in some of the abandoned houses.

The bodies, he said, have been reburied.

“The things happening in this town is [sic] not good for us. I am tired of burying dead bodies. Some are currently at Winneba morgue and I don’t even know them. Even during the demolition, some dead bodies and skeletons were found but because of how decomposed the bodies are, we had to rebury them. All these have destroyed the name of Buduburam” he bemoaned.

Chiefs of Gomoa Fetteh and Buduburam had demolished parts of Gomoa Buduburam to relocate market women who were trading alongside the Gomoa Buduburam Highway.

The demolition exercise was halted after the Central Regional Security Council visited the camp.

In an interview with Adom News, Nana Kojo Essel II said that the criminals had tarnished the name of Gomoa Buduburam due to continuous killings.

During a visit to the site, Nana Kojo Essel urged the leaders of the demolition exercise to work diligently to restore order in Buduburam.

Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has accused Asamoah Gyan of deliberately missing a crucial penalty during the 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay.

In their second Mundial appearance, the Black Stars had an opportunity to advance to the semi-finals, with the score tied at 1-1.

However, Gyan’s penalty struck the crossbar, ultimately leading to Ghana’s loss in the ensuing penalty shootout.

Mr. Dafeamekpor, who is a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) suggested that, Gyan’s supposed deliberate miss was driven by his political allegiance to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Radio XYZ, Dafeamekpor claimed, “I believe Asamoah Gyan intentionally squandered that penalty because it was under the NDC’s tenure. It is now clear to me that he missed the penalty in the 2010 World Cup and the African Cup deliberately so that the NDC government would not receive the acclaim.”

He continued, “Asamoah Gyan is now associated with the Bawumia campaign team. That’s a significant issue because when a public figure becomes partisan, I can confidently say it is for political reasons that he missed that penalty, ensuring the NDC government did not receive recognition. It is truly distressing.”

Mr. Dafeamekpor’s remarks came after Gyan was recently named as part of the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 manifesto committee.

These comments have further fueled the ongoing criticism about Gyan’s impartiality after accepting the role in Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team.

Despite the controversy, Gyan holds an impressive record such as being Africa’s all-time top scorer at the World Cup with six goals and being the Black Stars’ all-time top scorer with 51 goals.

Parliament has been reconnected to the national grid after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) task force disconnected the Legislature.

The development was over the House’s GH₵23 million debt owed the distribution company.

The chamber of Parliament was plunged into darkness, as well as the MPs’ offices, resulting in staff and members being stuck in elevators.

Prompt intervention by fire service officers was required to rescue those trapped in the elevators.

But Parliament has since settled more than GH₵10 million of the debt and has been reconnected.

Thursday’s power outage took place while the legislators were debating President Akufo-Addo’s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Outgoing Deputy Minister for Finance, Abena Osei-Asare was on the floor defending the President’s address when power went off.

It triggered chants of “Dumsor, dumsor!” from the Minority side of the house.

This development comes as many Ghanaians are already complaining of erratic power supply.

A Ghanaian journalist and LGBTQI+ activist, Ignatius Annor, is heartbroken over the passage of the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.

Mr Annor has said the news of the passage on Wednesday, February 28, hit hard that he couldn’t concentrate at work and had to take the day off.

In a Facebook post, the US-based journalist said he feels the pain of every Ghanaian yearning to be themselves and has also lost an opportunity to visit his family.

“Here is what I know, living in truth is the most powerful tool I know,” he stated.

Ignatius for the first time in February 2021 openly declared he was gay.

According to Ignatius Annor, he had kept his alignment with the community a secret for fear of losing his job and the stigma that it could generate.

Although his mother in January 2017, mentioned such a community is “demonic”, the activist believes his mother’s stand was because of “what has repeatedly been fed into the mind and ultimately the hearts of people.”

Meanwhile, the Bill currently proscribes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activities and criminalises their promotion, advocacy and funding.

Persons caught in these acts would be subjected to six months to three-year jail term with promoters and sponsors of these acts bearing a three to five-year jail term.

The Bill would now require presidential assent to come into force.

But critics have called on Akufo-Addo to reject the Bill, arguing it violates and infringes on fundamental human rights and have threatened to initiate legal action against it.

Two brothers clashed on the floor of Parliament over erratic power supply known in local parlance as ‘dumsor’ while debating President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address.

John Abdulai Jinapor, the Ranking Member for the Committee on Mines and Energy, criticised government for failing to provide funds to purchase fuel to power the Thermal Plants.

This, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP claimed is to blame for the unstable power across the country.

But his younger brother, Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources pooh poohed his claim.

He said government is working around the clock to ensure a stable power supply.

Mr. Jinapor also MP for Damongo maintained that, the current power situation is better than what was experienced under the erstwhile Mahama administration.

Ace investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas has said it will be improper to disclose his identity in the case he is expected to testify as a Witness against the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwasi Nyantakyi .

According to him, disclosing his identity to the accused persons will mean “signing his death warrant.”

Anas’ documentary titled #Number 12, which exposed bribery and corruption associated with the country’s football, led to Mr Nyantakyi being barred by FIFA and subsequently charged.

The trial is yet to commence since June 29, 2021, almost three years since Mr Nyantakyi pleaded not guilty to the charge of fraud and corruption over his involvement in the exposé.

He is also facing the charge of conspiracy to commit fraud with the former Northern Regional Representative of the GFA, Abdulai Alhassan.

The state named five witnesses to testify in the matter including Anas Aremeyaw Anas. However, none of the witnesses has been presented to court despite filing witness statements.

Mrs Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, the third judge sitting on the case since it started in March 2020, on Wednesday stated her inclination to strike the case out after state prosecutors informed the court that Anas Aremeyaw Anas, their star witness had declined to appear in court and testify as a witness without wearing a mask/hood citing security for his life as his concern.

According to the state prosecutor, Mr Aremeyaw Anas had implored the state to appeal against the decision of the High Court ordering him to show his face to the accused persons and their lawyers before testifying.

A High Court ruling in May 2023, stated that “Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas will testify against former GFA President Kwasi Nyantakyi in open court but disguised in a mask.

“Mr Nyantakyi will, however, have the opportunity to see his face in chambers before such testimony.”

This was after the Supreme Court presided over by Justice Baffoe-Bonnie on November 8, 2022, granted an application for certiorari filed by Kwesi Nyantakyi, quashing the order of High Court 2, Criminal Division, which granted a dispensation for the state to have its principal witness, Anas Aremeyaw Anas testify in-camera.

Lawyers of Mr. Nyantakyi quoted the prosecution to have said, “Our witness Anas Aremeyaw Anas, we pray that his testimony is heard in camera.”

This application was opposed by the applicant’s lawyer at the Supreme Court on April 29, 2022, who insisted that the High Court gave a dispensation without the facts and grounds of the application formally set out in an application to the Court.

A portion of the application said “…it is evident from Applicant’s lawyer’s objections to how the High Court’s discretion was invoked for a dispensation that the reasons for which the prosecution made the prayer were not clear.

“This is put beyond doubt by Applicant’s lawyer’s submission which is captured in the record as follows;

“…this will have the opportunity to let us know why he wants to testify in camera. (sic)”

“It is proper he comes formally, file a motion and support with an affidavit why his witness wants to testify in camera….”

This objection was ignored, but the Supreme Court upheld the plea, quashing the High Court ruling.

Anas Aremeyaw Anas, via his X page, formerly Twitter, published a statement from his legal team which said that he may choose to testify on behalf of the late Ahmed Suale, who was the principal witness.

“Anas Aremeyaw Anas agreed to testify in the stead of Ahmed Suale on the condition he will be allowed to do so in-camera or in chambers,” portion of the statement said in reaction to the order from the Supreme Court for him to testify without his mask.

It added that “Anas may choose to testify as prosecution witness or not.

“Anas and his Tiger Eye Pi team will continue to wear the iconic face beads as a symbol of impartial anonymity in investigative journalism and to highlight the extreme risk in that line of duty.”

Following the decision of the Supreme Court, the High Court ruled that Anas should show his face to the accused persons before his testimony.

An appeal was filed at the Court of Appeal about five months ago but neither a date for a hearing has been fixed nor a judgement delivered on the appeal.

During an appearance in court on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, the High Court judge gave the state a window to produce witnesses in the next adjourned date of April 30, 2024, or the case will be struck out.

It would be recalled that Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame, the first judge to sit on the case, on March 11, 2021, when it began on March 4, 2020, discharged the accused persons, stating, “I think the prosecution may need a longer time to put their house in order.

“It’s been one year since we set out to do a case Management Conference but due to the excuse by the Learned Counsel for the Republic, that they have a witness statement to file, we kept adjourning this case till today.

“I think in these modern times there can be a way out for prosecution who has the whole state apparatus behind her to file a witness statement without us going and coming.”

“Justice delayed they say Justice denied. Justice is two-way traffic for prosecution and accused as well,” the respected Judge noted.

“As it stands now, I have no option other than to discharge the accused persons. Any time prosecution is ready, they can do the needful.

“Accused persons are discharged,” Justice Comfort ruled.

However, Counsel for the Republic Victoria Asieduaa, proceeded to Criminal Court 2 of the High Court on March 24, 2021, to have the case heard afresh.

Nyantakyi filed an opposition against the move of the Republic, requesting that the case be taken back to Court 4, but on June 7, Justice Elfreda A. Dankyi, the second judge to sit on the case ruled that it would be heard in her court.

The Republic filed its first witness statements two years ago, but none is yet to appear in court and testify.

March 4, 2024, would be exactly four years since the former CAF 1st Vice President and FIFA Council member,  Kwesi Nyantakyi was arraigned before the Accra High Court.

Anas Aremeyaw Anas on March 26, 2019, barely a year after the exposè demanded the prosecution of Mr Nyantakyi in an online petition.

“In Ghana, he (Nyantakyi) was arrested, then granted bail. Police have completed investigations into likely criminal misconduct by Mr Nyantakyi.

“They submitted their findings to the Attorney General last year. The Attorney General has not taken any action on the case till date,” Anas said in a statement.

“Please help us ASK the Attorney General to MOVE this case forward. Mr Nyantakyi should face criminal prosecution over some of his misconduct, which borders on criminality.

“We are sending letters, making calls, sending social messages to all government entities that can help us MOVE this case to the next level. We are also reaching out to news media to help spread the word.

“If Nyantakyi is not prosecuted, our collective fight against corruption will be meaningless. It will also send a signal to many citizens that the law only deals with the poor, but the rich and powerful cannot be held responsible for their actions,” he noted.

In November same year, Mohammed Abdul Aziz, Member of Parliament for the Mion constituency demanded answers from the then Attorney General, Madam Gloria Akuffo today told Parliament that the government was committed to the prosecution of Kwesi Nyantakyi.

The Executive Secretary of the National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values, Moses Foh-Amoaning has expressed readiness to meet Prof Audrey Gadzekpo in ocurt over the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.

The legal practitioner has said the court will be provided with all the facts on why the Bill is important which will be thoroughly examined.

This according to him will leave no room for opponents to preach propaganda on the basis of human right.

“They say they are going to court, the law school is very close to Supreme Court, and we are waiting for Audrey Gadzekpo. In the Supreme Court, she won’t get the opportunity to preach propaganda, the court will examine the evidence, we will present graphic evidence, we will demonstrate the sexual activities they engage in.

“So, Audrey, get ready, we are going to expose all these things, don’t think you are coming to court to talk about human rights, civil rights, no. In the court of law, we will prove the facts and the court will see what you are doing to Ghanaian children,” he stated in an interview on Accra-based 3FM.

Professor Gadzepko, who is the Board Chair for the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) Ghana among others have vowed to seek redress in the Supreme Court if President Akufo-Addo assents the Bill into law.

Following the passage of the Bill by Parliament on Wednesday, they have argued the current state violates human rights.

If assented to by the President, the bill will impose sanctions on willful promotion and engagement in LGBTQ activities in the country.

The bill prescribes a minimum sentence of six months and a maximum of three years for individuals caught in the act of same-sex activities.

Despite the opposing views, lawyer Foh-Amoaning has said the bill is a step in the right direction.

“Once a society decides that this sort of behaviour is something we don’t like and therefore we are criminalizing it, you cannot promote it.

“Otherwise, you will be committing a crime, you are abetting, you are preparing, you are assisting, all of which are offences under the law,” he added.

The flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has maintained Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 presidential election.

According to JoyNews sources, the names that have come up as possible running mates include the former Chief of Staff – Julius Debrah, former Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu, the NDC Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey constituency – Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings and Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

John Mahama has submitted names to the National Executive Committee and the Council of Elders of the party for scrutiny.

The NEC and the Council of Elders of the party are preparing to deliberate on Mr Mahama’s choice for running mate but a highly placed source has confirmed to JoyNews that the former president will nominate Prof Opoku-Agyemang to partner with him for the 2024 general elections.

Speaking to JoyNews‘ Parliamentary correspondent, some MPs expressed their support for Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s nomination to partner with Mr Mahama in the December general elections.

The NDC MP for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed said; “I think all the names you have mentioned are capable than Dr Bawumia but I really don’t think it will make any sense changing the running mate we used in the 2020 elections.

He said it was very clear that there were some impacts being made by the running mateship of Prof Naana Jane and it wouldn’t make no political sense to replace her.

“I really don’t think there will be any changes. I will be shocked if there are any changes and the only way there could be a change is if Prof Naana says she is no longer willing to contest,” he told Kwaku Asante.

On her side, the Deputy Minority Whip, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah also backed the running mate position of Prof Opoku-Agyemang.

She remarked, “Why should it be another name? …. She was supporting way back before she came to the limelight. People were supporting behind and she was part of those people.”

Mrs Cudjoe-Ghansah stated that it is time for women to lead, emphasising that it starts from the vice president position.

“I believe the choice of a female running mate shows a commitment to gender equality and participation in leadership. John Mahama has made it and he’s going to do it again.

“We couldn’t get the general elections because of one or two reasons and this time, he’s going to name her again and have the first female vice president for Ghana,” she said.

The NDC MP for Kintampo North constituency, Joseph Kwame Kumah also backed the call to retain Prof Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate.

“I’m a gender activist, and I’m very sensitive when it comes to gender. For me, our mother Naana Jane did marvelously well.”

The driver of the 2M Express bus that narrowly escaped a robbery attack on the Kumasi-Accra Highway has recounted the harrowing experience.

On February 27, 2024, the 2M Express bus departed from Accra en route to Kumasi when it encountered the robbers near Atwedea.

The incident, captured on dashboard camera which has since gone viral on social media showed how the bus driver saved passengers from the armed robbers during a shoot-out.

Sharing his ordeal on Kumasi-based Akoma FM, the driver said he became suspicious of the actions of a vehicle ahead.

This he noted, prompted him to abruptly stop to avert a potential collision and ensure the safety of his passengers.

Just minutes, he said the armed robbers emerged from the nearby bush and started shooting sporadically.

“As I approached Atwedea towards the Juaso train lane, I observed a Sprinter bus ahead. Suddenly, the driver of the Sprinter bus began flashing his brake lights and abruptly stopped. I followed suit to prevent a collision. It was at this moment that I heard gunfire and witnessed armed individuals emerging from the nearby foliage.”

Realizing the gravity of the situation, the driver said swiftly reversed to evade the attackers and protect his passengers.

“One group targeted the Sprinter bus, while another advanced towards my vehicle. Without hesitation, I shifted into reverse gear and accelerated away from the scene. Fortunately, there were no vehicles behind me, allowing me to drive to safety. However, the robbers, noticing my escape, fired shots at my vehicle,” he recounted.

When he escaped and got to Asankare, he warned other motorists on the road and prevented them from falling prey.

“When I got to Asankare, I immediately began alerting oncoming vehicles about the danger ahead,” he emphasized.

Prof. Emeritus Stephen Adei, an economist, administrator, and writer who previously served as Director General and Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, has cautioned against selecting Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Despite acknowledging Madam Osei Opare’s leadership qualities, Prof. Adei expressed concerns that her inclusion on Bawumia’s ticket could pose challenges.

He argued that a Bawumia-Osei Opare ticket might be perceived as a continuation of President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

In an interview with JoyNews’ AM Show, the esteemed professor stated that he would not advise Dr. Bawumia to choose Osei Opare as his running mate.

“I think that Dr Bawumia will not go for the Chief of Staff, Frema Osei Opare because he will be undone because it will be too much considered as Akufo-Addo’s continuation. So I will not advise him to go for Frema Osei Opare. She is intelligent and capable, but he will go with a big liability if he does,” he said.

On Saturday, November 4, 2023, Vice President Dr. Bawumia was elected as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party.

Although Dr. Bawumia has not officially announced his running mate for the December polls, analysts have speculated on potential choices.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. John Kumah, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Joseph Osei Owusu, and clergyman and former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Prof. Opoku Onyinah are among those frequently mentioned by analysts as likely options.

Also, Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare and Communications Minister Ursula Owusu Ekulful have also been speculated as potential running mates to Dr. Bawumia.

A lead sponsor of the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill, Samuel George claims the Coalition of 18 Civil Society Groups against the Bill are being funded by organizations supporting LGBTQ+ community.

According to him, these individuals led by the Board Chairperson of the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Professor Audrey Gadzekpo have been influenced with money.

“God is exposing you all. All these people are being funded by LGBTQ organizations. They are collecting money for the advocacy they are doing now. They are being influenced by money, nothing more and nothing less” Mr. George alleged.

He made these accusations in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Thursday following the passage of the controversial Bill, which prohibits LGBTQI+ activities and criminalizes their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

However, Professor Gadzekpo has said that the anti-Gay Bill was passed for political reasons.

In October 2021, Professor Gadzekpo, with 14 professionals from various fields, including law and academia, submitted a memo to Parliament opposing the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill.

In response, Mr. George said their arguments lacked common sense noting that, their opposition is financially motivated.

The Ningo-Prampram MP questioned why they hadn’t taken their grievances to court if they think Parliament has erred.

Sam George said if it were about money, he himself would have been rich by now.

Ningo-Prampram Member of Parliament, Sam George, and Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Stephen Amoah, locked horns in a debate over Vice President Bawumia’s ‘driver’s mate’ analogy on live TV.

Vice President Bawumia had likened his role in government to that of a humble driver’s mate, sparking a flurry of reactions.

This analogy was not welcomed by Sam George who described Dr Bawumia as “Aplanke”, a Ga term used to describe a bus conductor, on TV3.

Stephen Amoah chided his colleague for the use of the inappropriate word to use.

“Aplanke is not an abusive word,” Sam George defended his choice of words amidst the escalating verbal joust.

But the exchange didn’t stop at verbal sparring. With a mischievous glint in his eye, Sam George couldn’t resist a playful jab at Dr. Amoah.

He likened his actions to disciplining a misbehaving child.

“When your child is misbehaving, don’t you tap his head?” he quipped, his hand inching towards Dr. Amoah’s head.

As he made the comments, his right hand went to the back of Mr Amoah’s head. He tapped his head severally, but not with intense force to cause any significant discomfort.

Playfully, Dr Amoah said “unallowed touching.” He added, “the head was made by God.” He also noted that he will speak to his lawyers regarding the issue.

The studio buzzed with energy as the debate took unexpected turn.

The Board Chair of the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Audrey Gadzekpo, has criticised Ningo Prampram Member of Parliament (MP) following the passage of the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.

According to her, Mr George, who is the lead proponent in 2015 defended the rights of LGBTQI individuals and is therefore seeking answers on what changed his mind.

This she alleged was when former President John Dramani Mahama was rumored to have had a gay friend who was sponsoring him.

“I am telling you that they have passed it not for any reason but for political reasons. Mr Sam George the Chief proponent of the bill in 2015 when his candidate John Mahama was being accused of having a friend who was a homosexual sponsoring him etc. Sam George is on record saying that the constitution protects those rights.

“So I have to wonder why he changed his mind…What has changed? 10 years ago did he have a different morality from today, from 2021 when he proposed the bill,” she said in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM.

Her comment follows the passage of the controversial bill which proscribes LGBTQI+ activities and criminalises its promotion, advocacy and funding.

Persons caught in the act would be subjected to six months to three-year jail term with promoters and sponsors of the act bearing a three to five-year jail term.

However, Prof Gadzekpo has claimed the Anti-Gay Bill was passed for political reasons.

“That is why I am saying there is politics. They are walking over the bodies of vulnerable people,” she stated.

Professor Gadzekpo together with 14 professionals in various fields including law and academia in October 2021 submitted a memo to Parliament to kick against the anti-LGBTQI+ bill.

In the view of these 15 individuals, the bill is an “impermissible invasion of the inviolability of human dignity, adding railroading the bill through would mean challenging Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

Following the passage on Wednesday, she has reiterated her stance, stating the bill is unnecessary and President Nana Akufo-Addo should not assent for it to be passed into law.

Parliament has passed the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021 popularly known as anti-LGBTQI Bill on Wednesday February 28, 2024.

The Bill which has generated a lot of attention locally and internationally, seeks to curb the acknowledgement and promotion of any rights of LGBTQI+ individuals or group.

Persons caught in the act would be subjected to a 6 months to 3 year jail term with promoters and sponsors of the act bearing a 3 to 5 year jail term.

On February 21, the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin withdrew several amendments he had proposed to the bill.

However, during the deliberation stage of the bill on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, Mr. Afenyo-Markin restated his position on the bill, arguing that he was opposed to certain aspects of the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, emphasising that the country should not enact measures that prohibit individuals or groups from supporting vulnerable members of society.

“You cannot — let’s not be too emotional about this; let’s be consistent. You are saying that you are protecting press freedom, so you are subjecting that provision to the constitutional imperative. And I’m pointing out to you that this particular provision must also be subjected to the constitution, and Article 17 is a major guide.”

The Majority Leader further stated that he supports aspects of the bill that align with human rights.

The Supreme Court has dismissed an application filed by undercover journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, requesting for a judgement passed by an Accra High Court to be quashed.

This follows an earlier application at the apex court, requesting for the nullification of the High Court’s dismissal of his defamation suit against the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene-Agyapong.

In a ruling on March 15, 2023, the Court presided over by Justice Eric Baah, a Court of Appeal judge sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court Judge, dismissed the case for lacking merit.

The judge had added that although the words spoken against Anas were factual and capable of defamation, he could not prove same.

“From the above, I hold that the plaintiff is a blackmailer who uses blackmail to extort money from his opponents and people he does not like.

“What the plaintiff is doing is not investigative journalism but investigative terrorism,” the presiding judge, who awarded cost of GH¢50,000 against Anas had said.

Subsequently, Mr. Aremeyaw Anas filed an application at the Supreme Court to quash the judgment of the High Court.

The investigative journalist explained that the grounds for the application were based on “absence of jurisdiction” by the sitting judge and the “apparent or real likelihood of bias and impartiality on the part of the judge”.

But in a 3-2 majority decision, a five-member panel of the apex court presided over by the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, dismissed the certiorari application.

The Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Justices Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu and Samuel Asiedu were on the majority side, while Justices Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu and Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi dissented.

The five-member panel also upheld the previous ruling by the High Court.

However, despite requests from Kennedy Agyapong’s lawyer for costs to be awarded against Anas, the Supreme Court declined to do so.

Some affected residents of Gomoa Buduburam, known as Liberia Camp, have hijacked Buduburam Point Hope D/A Basic School.

They are using classrooms as their bedrooms after chiefs of Gomoa Fetteh and Buduburam demolished their houses on Tuesday.

Over 2000 Ghanaians and Liberian nationals were affected in the ongoing demolition exercise which started on Tuesday at Buduburam.

Pupils of Gomoa Buduburam Point Hope Basic School have been asked to go home because all classrooms have been occupied by Liberian nationals.

In an interview with Adom News, some of the affected Liberian nationals say they have no option but to occupy the school since the school was built for them by the United Nations.

The affected persons say they have been in the Liberia camp for 33 years but the chiefs failed to notify them before demolishing their houses.

The Gomoa Fetteh Traditional Council last week threatened to demolish portions of Zone E of the Budumburam camp to make way for the development of a market for traders who have been affected by the ongoing expansion works on the Kasoa-Winneba Highway.

The Traditional Authority said the activities of these market women along the stretch are impeding the work of contractors working on the expansion of the highway.

The traditional Council carried through with the threat by demolishing several structures at the Liberia Camp.

About 600 Liberians and Ghanaians have been rendered homeless as a result of a demolition exercise carried out by the Gomoa Fetteh Traditional Council on February 27, 2024.

The Council states the action aims to make room for a market development project necessitated by the ongoing expansion of the Kasoa-Winneba Highway.

Last week, the Traditional Council issued a warning of impending demolition in Zone E of the Budumburam camp to pave the way for a market benefiting traders affected by the highway expansion.

The Council said the trading activities along the highway are obstructing the work of highway contractorsi

It followed through with its warning, demolishing numerous structures at the Liberia Camp.

However, some community members affected by the operation claim surprise, blaming the council for extending the demolition beyond the initially marked zones.

According to affected individuals, about 600 Liberian nationals are now without shelter due to the operation.

Jamal George, a displaced resident, expressed dismay, urging government intervention.

The Liberian Community’s leadership accuses the Ghanaian government of neglect, viewing the demolition as a covert attempt to expel them from the settlement.

They argue that the demolition violates the UN Convention on refugee settlements.

The vulnerable, particularly the elderly, now face heightened risks without a place to stay. Some have sought refuge in local schools within the Buduburam community.

The Gomoa East District Assembly is yet to respond to the matter.

Nii Armah Ashitey a former Assembly member, who was allegedly given GH₵500,000 by a foundation to construct road and drainage but failed has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Ashitey, a former assembly member for Adobetor electoral area in La Dadekotpon Municipality, has been charged with defrauding by false pretences, using public office for profit, and money laundering.

The 63-year-old former assembly member has pleaded not guilty to the various charges.

Ashitey is said to have told the Police that he used the money for “mobilization of the project” but could not provide documents and receipts to that effect.

The court presided over by Mr Isaac Addo has admitted Ashitey to bail in the sum of GH₵500,000 with two sureties.

The matter has been adjourned to April 2, 2024.

Prosecution led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong said the complainants, Maxwell Ahugah and Mrs Naomi Vogel were manager and director, respectively of Robert Vogel Memorial Foundation.

ASP Frimpong said the accused person was a resident of La Wireless.

Prosecution said somewhere in the month of May 2018, Robert Vogel Foundation Memorial, a non-profit organization, engaged in philanthropic activities within the Community, decided to construct a road and drainage as part of their community development at Adobetor electoral area.

According to prosecution, the construction of the projects took place during Ashitey’s tenure as an assembly member of La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly.

The prosecutor said Ashitey was approached by the Director and Manager of the Robert Vogel Memorial Foundation about their desire to construct a particular road with its attached drainage.

Prosecution said the accused person took advantage of the gesture and presented to the complainants, Bill of Quantities on a number of roads and drains that the assembly had earmarked to construct.

The court heard that Ashitey deceived the Director Mrs Naomi Vogel of the said Foundation to transfer GHC500,000 into his personal account with La Community Bank which he presented as the Municipal Assembly‘s account.

Again, the prosecution said the accused person “deceived the foundation manager and director into believing that the construction of the selected road and drains at Adobetor area had been done with the funds from the Foundation.

Prosecution said the accused person, however, failed to undertake the construction.

The prosecutor said on April 11, 2023, Ashitey was arrested and during interrogation, he told the Police that he “used all the GH₵500,000 to do mobilization of the project”.

Prosecution said during investigations, the accused person was allowed to furnish the Police with receipts or documents to know how the funds were disbursed for the “mobilization but he could not provide any document or receipts.”

ASP Frimpong said the Police visited the area where the construction should have been done and it was observed that the road had not been constructed and no drainage was done.

“Investigations revealed that accused person simply made this representation which he knew were false to obtain the consent of the manager and the director of the foundation to part with the GH₵500,000 and he has since misappropriated the said amount with no effort or ability to construct the road,” prosecution said.

The prosecutor said it was also established that by the accused person’s status as someone who held office as an elected assembly member for Adobetor electoral area, he was a public officer.

The Ghana Centre for Democratic Development is urging President Akufo-Addo not assent to the anti- LGBTQI+ Bill.

The Bill which when passed into law will criminalize the promotion, advocacy, funding and acts of homosexuality.

According to the Board Chairperson of CDD, Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, the Bill which is expected to be passed this week will not only criminalize persons involved but will additionally violate media and press freedom.

Speaking at a sensitization workshop for journalists on promoting human rights in Accra, she argued will punish any citizen who broadcasts or posts publications, stories that are said to be related to LGBTQI+ activities.

Even more serious, Professor Gadzekpo noted that, the Bill also violates article 108 of the 1992 Constitution which prohibits private members’ Bills that impose a charge on the public purse.

President Akufo-Addo has said the successful implementation of the Free Senior High School policy has silenced critics.

According to him, not only has the implementation of the policy been successful, but it remains a transformative programme which has unearthed talents who may have ended their formal education at the BECE level.

Addressing the nation on Tuesday, President Akufo-Addo said “Mr Speaker, Free SHS might be labelled by its detractors as a mere political slogan that must be demonised, but it is, in fact, a transformative programme that has broken myths and liberated minds. I am proud that the NPP government, under my leadership, has been able to bring this transformative policy into our education system.”

“Mr Speaker, I believe the success of the Free SHS has answered its critics and the arguments about it should cease, and we should simply concentrate on finding ways to improve it,” he stated.

The President said that aside from implementing the policy, he is thankful that people’s fears that Free SHS would lower standards in schools have been allayed following the release of the 2023 WASSCE results.

“I know we will get more engineers, doctors, architects, scientists, writers and poets out of the increased numbers of those attending Senior High School, who will go on to further their education,” he indicated.

President Akufo-Addo added that even for students who unfortunately after SHS are unbale to continue schooling, they remain educated with increased self-confidence and are a value for the workforce. “That, alone, makes Free SHS worthwhile,” he noted.

Patrons of Ga kenkey in Accra must brace themselves for extra expenditure if they want to continue enjoying their delicacy.

This is because some sellers of the kenkey are contemplating reviewing their operational cost to meet the continuous increase in prices on the market of ingredients used for the food.

A visit to some known Ga Kenkey joints within the Accra metropolis in areas such as Adabraka, Osu, Tudu and Jamestown last Wednesday revealed that they bought a bag of pepper for GH¢800 and as a result, many of the kenkey sellers are considering factoring the cost of the pepper, onion and tomatoes into their production cost.

Effect

The effect of their decision is that the ground pepper with slices of onions and tomatoes that complement the kenkey would no longer be served free.

Kenkey (also known as kɔmi, otim or nkran dorkunu) has been patronised for years as one of the staple dishes enjoyed by many from all walks of life, especially the Gas, due to its affordability and accessibility.

It is usually sold with pepper sauce and fried fish.

More sophisticated joints sell with avocados, shrimps and fried eggs.

Some of the Ga kenkey sellers in an interview with The Mirror last Wednesday said “pepper has become expensive and very soon we will start selling it.

It will not be free.

Accra kenkey that used to be a meal for the poor is now expensive.

If you want to enjoy a proper kenkey meal, you must have about GH¢50 because fish has also become expensive and a bag of pepper alone is now GH¢800”.

At the Kenkey Boutique Company Ltd at Adabraka, the seller who gave her name as Hajia lamented about the cost of ingredients explaining that she was unable to serve her clients with as much pepper as they desired even though she knew that the quantity she served was inadequate.

She said there were customers who wanted to buy only kenkey with plenty ground pepper without fish but that was not possible.

“Some people may only have GH¢10 and would want maybe two balls with just pepper and there are those who may only have GH¢5 but we use the fish to sell the kenkey.

They opt for only kenkey because fish is expensive.

The least is GH¢10 and very soon the pepper will also not be free,” she explained.

Hajia explained that in 2017, she had many customers but since the price of kenkey increased from GH¢2 to GH¢3 and now GH¢5, it had affected sales, “now we don’t get customers like before. Can’t you see here has been very quiet?” she asked.

Others were of the view that the cost of production of the corn meal was very costly and difficult saying that was why the kenkey has been selling between GH¢4 and GH¢5 since 2017.

A seller at Tudu, Naa Dodua, said “from the mill to the one who will stir, the one who will mould, the one who will cook and the one who will remove from fire, all takes money depending on the volume of work, it is why the price has moved from GH¢2.

The maize meal is very difficult to prepare and if the seller bought the maize on credit it means she is going to reduce the size of the balls making them small”.

Kenkey house

However, the situation was different at the popular Kenkey house, a family business at Jamestown.

The caterers told The Mirror that though pepper and maize had become expensive, they were going to serve pepper for free and maintain the price of a ball of kenkey at GH¢3.

They said some sellers were already selling pepper but “we will never do that. We will serve pepper free”.

One of the caterers, Auntie Naa, explained that although they had customers who bought on wholesale to send abroad, they took into consideration their environment hence they didn’t have to make the meal expensive.

“With just GH¢10, you will be able to enjoy a ball of kenkey with fish and still get about GH¢4 change. It is only those who want to eat big who will spend GH¢50 on kenkey,” she said.

Kenkey Boutique Company Ltd at AdabrakaKenkey Boutique Company Ltd at Adabraka

She said the Ga meal was such that it had served families especially the poor, graduates and unemployed for years and as such, whether there was an increase in price of ingredients or not, it should be moulded in a reasonable size.

Ga Kenkey, she explained, was prepared by soaking grains of maize in water for about three days, before they were milled and kneaded with water into a dough.

Pointing at some of the dough, she said “ the dough is allowed to ferment for days before part of it is cooked and mixed with the uncooked dough and wrapped in maize leaves before being boiled again on fire”.

Auntie Naa said the business which was run by her and her siblings was a hand-me-down from their late mother who had sold kenkey for over 80 years in the area.

Maize chairman

In a telephone interview with the Nkoranza Maize Chairman, Mr Opoku Johnson, he said maize was currently expensive because of the demand, so like “ we do in economics when the demand is high, supply is low.

A bag of maize is GH¢450, those who will fill it in the sack take GH¢30 plus lorry fare to Accra which is GH¢60gh a sack. That’s GH¢540”.

He said it was important for kenkey vendors to compare prices in Nkoranza to that of Accra so they do not end up buying from Nkoranza when they could just buy at the Accra central market.

Patrons

Some patrons of kenkey told The Mirror that kenkey sellers were not just in business but had served the youth, served dreams and served the nation. Surviving in Accra involves learning how to eat one ball of kenkey a day.

A photographer known as Prof. said he could not explain what Ga kenkey does to him, “it boosts my inner feeling, l can’t explain. I eat it every morning. Pepper for sale? Never”.

A consumer, Yvonne Appiah Kubi, said: “I like Ga kenkey so much but pepper should never be sold just as soup with banku or fufu. It doesn’t make sense. In fact, it’s a criminal act”.

Another consumer, Ama Owusua, said she had to learn how to eat Ga kenkey to be able to “beat the economy. When l eat a ball in the morning, I am able to skip lunch. And if l eat it during lunch, l am able to skip supper”.

However, there were patrons who explained that even though they ate the kenkey, it wasn’t something they enjoyed because some balls were very hard to swallow and not well prepared.

A consumer, Blessing Kesinornu, said her love for the Ga meal reduced “to 30 per cent after l encountered one that was very hard to swallow”.

The Minority in Parliament briefly disrupted the State of the Nation address (SONA) of President Akufo-Addo with pro-Mahama chants.

Ahead of the address, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin introduced dignitaries invited into the house for the event on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.

Speaker announced the names to the cheers of the legislators. One by one, the lists grew.

The Minority erupted into a thunderous roar when the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama was named.

They chanted, ‘JM will be back.’

Despite the Speaker’s call for order, the spirited singing and cheering persisted.

The introduction of Bawumia also drew reactions from the MPs, prolonging the noisy atmosphere.

After 5 minutes, the Speaker stood on his feet with a stern look at the NDC side of the aisle.

“When the Speaker is on his feet, everybody else is seated and quiet. That is parliament.” He cautioned against flouting the rules, emphasizing the formality of the occasion and the consequences of disregarding protocol, particularly in an election year.

His words restored order, and the House resumed proceedings peacefully.

The two were part of dignitaries in Parliament ahead of the State of the Nation Address (SoNA) by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday Feburary 27, 2024.

However, what caught the attention of our lenses was the entrance of the NDC Chairman popularly known as General Mosquito.

As he entered the area where the dignitaries were seated, he began shaking their hands.

However, after shaking hands with Professor Mike Oquaye, who was seated next to the former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, he only smiled and waved at her before moving on to former President John Mahama to shake his hand then proceeded to take his seat.
