Thomas Partey made an injury return as Arsenal cruised to a seventh successive Premier League win as they put six past a dreadful Sheffield United side at Bramall Lane.

The Gunners were 3-0 up inside 13 minutes and led 5-0 at half-time against the league’s bottom side.

Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Ben White scored – with an own goal from Jayden Bogle – for Mikel Arteta’s team.

The win ensures Arsenal move two points behind leaders Liverpool.

It keeps the Gunners in the thick of the title race, while in contrast, Sheffield United are 11 points from safety with just 11 games remaining.

Arsenal scored after five minutes, with the only surprise being that it took them so long. They carved United open down the left before the ball was cut back for Odegaard – unmarked 10 yards out – to slot home.

The lead was doubled in the 13th minute – Bukayo Saka’s low cross was deflected into his own net by Bogle, who got his legs in a tangle with the ball deflecting off his ankle – and was quickly extended when Martinelli fired in via a deflection after Jakob Kiwior’s cut back.

As fans once again streamed out of Bramall Lane during the first half, Havertz made it 4-0 by tucking into the bottom corner following a Martinelli through ball.

Arsenal cut through United at will, and another slick move of short passes on 39 minutes ended in Rice finishing low past the beleaguered home keeper Ivo Grbic.

The visitors did not ease up after the break, as another well-worked move ended in right-back White firing powerfully past Grbic with his left foot.

The Gunners have become the first English league side to win three consecutive away games by a margin of five or more goals, while United – seemingly doomed to relegation – are the first English league side to lose four consecutive home games in all competitions while conceding five or more goals.

The Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has outlined a comprehensive maintenance strategy for the newly constructed Borteyman Sports Complex after the 2023 African Games.

Concerns have been raised about the maintenance of the Borteyman Sports Complex, a key venue for the continental event and the University of Ghana Stadium after the event.

They cited how similar facilities have been left to rot after serving their purpose.

But addressing these concerns at a press conference on Monday, March 4 in Accra, Minister Ussif unveiled plans to put the facility into good use.

“To guarantee the enduring upkeep and utility of the Borteyman facilities for the Ghanaian populace, we intend to transform it into a University of Sports for Development post the African Games,” he announced.

Additionally, recreational amenities will be integrated into the venue to entice visitors from across the globe. Minister Ussif elaborated on the expansion plans, stating, “We will enhance the infrastructure by introducing hostel facilities, football pitches, a cafeteria, and a medical centre at the site.

“These enhancements aim to allure both local and international sports federations to utilize Ghana as a training base for various competitions, solidifying our nation’s position as a sports hub in the West African sub-region” he stated.

The 2023 African Games commenced on Sunday, March 3rd, with the highly anticipated opening ceremony scheduled for Friday, March 8th.

The 13th African Games will feature eight disciplines serving as qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

These include Athletics, Swimming, Badminton, Triathlon, Tennis, and Table Tennis. Additionally, demonstration games such as pickleball, speedball and e-sports will be showcased during the event.

West Ham United attacker, Jarrod Bowen has praised Mohamemd Kudus, describing him as a special and talented player following his impact at the club.

The Ghana attacker made a switch from Dutch side, Ajax to the Premier League side last summer.

After a torrid start, Kudus has made an impressive impact for The Hammers, scoring 10 goals in all competitions for the London-based club.

However, Bowen speaking in an interview was full of praise for Kudus, claiming that he is a special player whom he enjoys playing with.

“He’s really good, you see his quality and the impact he’s had straight away,” the English international told Premier League’s YouTube channel.

“I’d say I’m experienced in the Premier League, so I’m trying to help the players who come in. Especially with Mo in my position. These players are top players you know.

“Mo has played in the World Cup and the Champions League, these players don’t need much in terms of learning. We have a great connection, he’s left-footed off the right, the same as me.

“I just try to help him as much as I can. The way he’s started for us, the impact he’s had, the goals he’s scored, he’s a very special player,” Bowen said.

Having assisted in West Ham’s win against Brentford, Mohammed Kudus again assisted in their win against Everton at Goodison Park over the weekend.

Crystal Palace manager, Oliver Glasner has opened up on Jordan Ayew’s substitution during their Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Eagles suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Spurs at the Tottenham Stadium on Saturday.

However, the Ghana international was taken off the pitch after the 70th-minute mark, which led to widespread speculation about a potential injury.

The decision to withdraw Ayew in the later stages of the match given his recent stellar form has raised eyebrows among the fans.

But in a post-match interview, Glasner addressed the situation, revealing that Ayew had sustained a knock on his hip during the first half of the game.

“He got a hit in the first half on his hip. He already told us at halftime he had maybe 10 or 15 minutes, but I hope and I think it’s not so bad,” Glasner explained.

Ayew had been in impressive form, having scored in back-to-back games for Crystal Palace.

His goal against Everton had even earned him a nomination for the prestigious EPL Goal of the Month Award for February.

Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has advocated for a national dialogue regarding Black Stars’ call-ups and bonuses in light of their recent performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ussif made this call after his appearance on ‘Ekosii Sen’ on Asempa FM last Friday, where he discussed the issues surrounding the national team.

The Black Stars faced criticism following their disappointing display at the AFCON, where they failed to advance past the group stage for the second consecutive tournament, with Ivory Coast ultimately clinching the title.

During the interview, the sector minister emphasized the need for dialogue to reevaluate the process of selecting players for the Black Stars and reconsidering their bonus structures.

He suggested that, the practice of paying substantial amounts to bring players from their respective clubs for national assignment should be reconsidered.

Video below:

Amidst these discussions, the appointment of a new head coach for the team remains pending following the dismissal of Chris Hughton after the team’s elimination from the tournament.

Multiple reports in local media claim Otto Addo is a frontrunner for the head coach position.

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has dispelled rumours that the $47m operational budget estimates for the Accra 2023 African Games is for expenses from March 8 to March 23.

Ghana hosts the African Games for the first time, with over 13,000 participants made up of 5000 athletes, 3000 technical officials, 3000 volunteers and 2000 guests from 55 African countries.

Briefing the nation on preparations and readiness of Ghana to host the African Games, Mustapha Ussif said there have been deliberate distortions on the intended use of the budget estimates, and took advantage to throw more light on the $47m operational budget estimates for the competition.

“A total amount of Forty-Seven Million Seven Hundred and Twelve Thousand, Eight Hundred and Fifty-Three United Stated Dollars, Sixty-Five Cents (US$ 47,712,853.65) is estimated to cover the operations of the LOC,” said Mustapha Ussif.

“This estimated amount is earmarked to be used by the LOC for the general organisation of the competition, which started after the LOC was formed in October 2020. Areas of expenditure by the LOC include technical meetings with TCAG, preparation of relevant guidelines, rules, regulations and manuals, sensitisation, management of the Games (games management system), accommodation for athletes, volunteers and officials (totalling about 13,000 participants), internal transportation, airfare for officials, catering services (feeding of about 13,000 participants), security, allowances for volunteers and officials, accreditation, medical equipment, medals for athletes among others, etc,” he added.

“This amount will also cover the payment of rent for the LOC office accommodation, logistics, purchase of equipment, Anti-Doping services and members’ allowances.”

Ussif added that unlike in football, where the Confederation of African Football pays for the accommodation of teams, the host country has to pay for the hotel accommodation of all participating football teams.

“In this regard, Ghana will also pay for the hotel bills of all the participating football teams and this is also part of the budget.”

The African Games, with multiple sports disciplines and almost all African countries participating, is regarded as a very expensive tournament to organise.

However, the benefits of hosting it are enormous, as it leaves host nations with improved sports facilities and immeasurable international exposure.

Head coach of Nsoatremam FC, Maxwell Konadu has criticized his players for failing to adhere to instructions against Hearts of Oak.

The Nsoatre-based side suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Phobian Club in the matchday 19 games at the Nana Kronmansah Park.

Hearts of Oak scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the second half and according to Konadu, his players failed to heed instructions to take advantage of Hearts of Oak’s lack of wing play.

“When Hearts of Oak came in the second half, they started playing the 4-4-2 diamond, which means they didn’t have wingers and that is what we instructed our boys to play through the wings so that we can hit them at their weakest point but the first 10 minutes they were not (responding to the tactics) I don’t know what happened because the instructions were clear,” he said.

Salifu Ibrahim and Cisse Kasim scored for Hearts of Oak before Walid Fuseini scored a consolation for the home side.

Nsoatreman FC, who now sit 4th on the Premier League log with 30 points will hope to return to winning ways when they host Dreams FC in the matchday 20 games on Sunday.

La Liga is analysing a video reportedly showing Vinicius Jr being racially abused during Real Madrid’s game at Valencia, BBC Sport understands.

The video posted on social media allegedly shows a child fan directing abuse towards the player, reports The Athletic.

Vinicius scored twice in Saturday’s 2-2 draw and celebrated by raising his fist in the air.

The 23-year-old has faced racist abuse several times during his time in Spain.

In May 2023, Vinicius said “La Liga belongs to racists” after he was abused by Valencia fans at the Mestalla.

Three people were later arrested in connection with the abuse and Valencia were fined and ordered to partially close their stadium for five matches, later reduced to three on appeal.

The racist abuse Vinicius has faced in the past 18 months includes:

September 2022 – Some Atletico Madrid fans sang racist songs toward Vinicius outside their Metropolitano stadium before Real Madrid played them. Atletico Madrid later condemned the “unacceptable” chants by a “minority” of fans.

September 2022 – Some pundits in Spain criticised Vinicius’ goal celebration, in which he danced by the corner flag. He responded by saying “the happiness of a black Brazilian in Europe” is behind the criticism.

December 2022 – Vinicius appeared to be subjected to racist abuse at Valladolid while he walked past fans after being substituted. The next month La Liga said it had filed charges relating to the racist abuse of Vinicius to the “relevant judicial, administrative and sporting bodies”.

January 2023 – An effigy of the Real Madrid winger was hung from a bridge near the club’s training ground before a game against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey. Atletico said the incident was “repugnant”.

February 2023 – Mallorca fans were filmed allegedly racially abusing the Brazilian during a game against Real.

March 2023 – La Liga said “intolerable racist behaviour was once again observed against Vinicius” in a game against Barcelona and it had reported the racist insults to the Barcelona Court of Instruction.

May 2023 – Vinicius suffered racist abuse against Valencia. Three people were later detained in connection with the abuse.

October 2023 – Vinicius praised Sevilla for acting swiftly to eject and report a fan to authorities for allegedly racially abusing him.

October 2023 – Barcelona opened an investigation after Vinicius was allegedly abused by fans after being substituted during El Clasico.

Manchester United fighting for fifth and possible Champions League spot, says Erik ten Hag https://www.adomonline.com/manchester-united-fighting-for-fifth-and-possible-champions-league-spot-says-erik-ten-hag/ Mon, 04 Mar 2024 09:37:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2364505 Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is refusing to give up on Champions League qualification even though his side are now 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa with 11 games left. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is refusing to give up on Champions League qualification even though his side are now 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa with 11 games left.

New co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made getting into Europe’s most glamorous competition a priority for the season.

But United’s 3-1 defeat at Manchester City means they now need Villa to slip up badly, or for the Premier League to end up with five spots in the expanded competition.

Even then, United will need fifth-placed Tottenham to fail as Ange Postecoglou’s side are six points clear, with a game in hand.

“It can be a quick turnaround,” said Ten Hag. “We have to go into another final and try and get closer to them.

“It can be an advantage that fifth spot can also be a Champions League spot, so we have to go for it and win our games.”

United’s task is not helped by the fact they have played both Villa and Tottenham twice, although the pair do face each other at Villa Park next Sunday.

‘We were close to winning’

England will get five Champions League places if the performances of Premier League teams in all three European competitions this term end with them finishing in the top two to claim one of Uefa’s ‘Performance Slots’.

Currently Italy and Germany are in those positions, with England third, meaning United must hope old rivals City and Liverpool, among others, keep progressing and clubs from Serie A and the Bundesliga get knocked out.

However, United also need to catch Villa or Tottenham, which on this evidence is unlikely.

Although they led early through Marcus Rashford’s magnificent effort, Ten Hag’s side had 26% possession and attempted just three shots in the game. Only once, against Liverpool in April 2022 during the final weeks of Ralf Rangnick’s unhappy reign when they lost 4-0, have they had fewer since 2003.

In return, they allowed City 27 shots meaning United have now faced 444 efforts on goal this season at a rate of 16.4 per game – only West Ham (16.9), Luton (16.9) and Sheffield United (17.2) have given up more.

The defeat was United’s 11th in the Premier League, one short of their worst return, again in 2022 and also 2013-14, when David Moyes was sacked.

With new director Sir Dave Brailsford watching on, it hardly inspires confidence in Ten Hag’s tenure, even though the Dutchman thought his side did well.

“Football is not just about possession,” he said. “Of course you need the ball to score a goal but in the first 20 minutes we had more opportunities and we defended brilliantly out of possession.

“In defining moments we didn’t have it on our side because at 1-1 Rashford was in another break, and just before the 2-1 it was Garnacho in the breakthrough. But we were really close to winning or at least getting a point.”

Ten Hag in the spotlight

Erik ten Hag shakes hands with Marcus Rashford
Erik ten Hag has lost four of his five meetings with Manchester City since taking charge of Manchester United in 2022

As with the home defeat by Fulham eight days earlier, when he claimed United were the better side, many will take a different view to Ten Hag.

They may also reject Ten Hag’s theory his side should have been given a free-kick for a foul on Rashford by Kyle Walker in the moments before the counter-attack that led to Foden’s equaliser.

“It was very soft but when you are in a full-speed run and you get a little touch, then you are out of control,” he said.

The brutal truth for Ten Hag is that Brailsford, Ratcliffe and, possibly, Dan Ashworth – depending on when United can strike a deal with Newcastle for their sporting director to begin work – will decide his fate.

Former United skipper Gary Neville repeated on Sky Sports the decision may have already been reached.

With home matches against Liverpool in league and FA Cup, plus a trip to Chelsea to navigate in the next month and struggling Everton due at Old Trafford on Saturday, even if it hasn’t, the conclusions may not be far away.

Ten Hag though, continues to talk up his side.

“No, I don’t think so,” he said, when asked whether the game was a reminder of the gulf between United and City. “Absolutely not.

“You can see we have many problems in injuries and still we had an opportunity. It’s not that big and when we have everyone on board we can be competitive.

“But City, is in this moment, the best team in the world. Don’t forget this.”

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City arguably have the most difficult run of fixtures in the coming weeks with games against both title rivals, starting with a highly anticipated trip to Anfield to face leaders Liverpool on 10 March.

Arsenal visit City on the final day of March.

As for Liverpool, the loss in north London on 4 February remains their only league defeat in their past 19 games. As well as Jurgen Klopp’s team hosting City on 10 March, they have a trip to Goodison Park for the Merseyside derby to fit into a busy schedule.

What do the prediction models suggest?

The Boston Celtics thrashed the Golden State Warriors 140-88 as they extended their winning streak to 11 games.

Jayson Tatum, on his 26th birthday, scored 27 points for the Celtics, who are top of the Eastern Conference, and team-mate Jaylen Brown added 29 points.

The victory meant the Celtics became the first franchise in NBA history to win three games by 50 or more points in the same season.

“It’s up there. Great birthday,” said Tatum.

“Got to do what I love in front of the best fans in the world and get a win.”

The hosting Celtics, who now have a 48-12 record, led 82-38 at half-time and both sides rested some of their star players for the second half.

“You flush it down the toilet,” said Warriors coach Steve Kerr, whose side are ninth in the Western Conference.

“Boston were amazing, we weren’t beating them today. They were fantastic. This was a really impressive performance by them at both ends.”

Elsewhere, Victor Wembanyama registered 31 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, six blocked shots and a steal to help the San Antonio Spurs beat the visiting Indiana Pacers 117-105.

The Oklahoma City Thunder, who are top of the Western Conference with a 42-18 record, beat seventh-placed Phoenix Suns 118-110.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recorded 35 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and three steals for the Thunder.

Ghanaian Premier League outfit Dreams FC has successfully advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 CAF Confederation Cup.

Despite a narrow 2-1 loss to Rivers United in their final group game, the Still Believe lads secured their spot in the next round of the competition for the first time in their history.

Dreams FC’s advancement was confirmed following a draw between Club Africain and AC Lobito in the other group match.

The Still Believe lads began the scoring as Abdul Aziz Issah found the net after the 40th-minute mark, capitalizing on a pass from forward John Antwi.

This put them ahead at halftime. However, Rivers United responded after the break when Echeta Ugonna Deputy scored, evening the score and tilting the momentum in their favour.

Dreams FC faced a setback in the 81st minute when Seth Agyemang received his second yellow card of the second half, resulting in his expulsion from the match.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw until Rivers United scored a late goal, securing all three points.

By making it to the quarterfinals, Dreams FC achieved a historic feat as the first Ghanaian team to reach the knockout stage of the CAF Confederation Cup since Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak in 2004.

A powerful rainstorm that struck Saturday evening has caused significant damage to the roofing of the VIP stands and other sections of the  Sunyani Coronation Park.

The most affected areas were the left and right wings of the VIP stands, portions of the Jubilee stand, and the DKM stand.

The rainstorm began around 5:15 pm on Saturday and lasted until 18:30 hours.

According to an eyewitness, Francis Ankamah Wanney, Secretary of the Bono Ahafo Regional Football Association, the rain started shortly after an FA Cup round of 16 match between Sunyani Prisons Ladies and Kumasi Sports Academy at the Park.

He said portions of the roofing of the left wing of the VIP stands collapsed onto a Northern Electricity Development Company (NEDCo) light pole at the Park, near the RFA office, causing a blackout in the area.

Additionally, the falling roof from the right wing of the VIP stands narrowly missed hitting the bus of Kumasi Sports Academy as it landed at the front of the bus.

In a related interview, Mr. Foster Kwame Opoku Boakye, the Bono Regional Director of the National Sports Authority, emphasized the urgent need for action to address  the damage.

He requested for assistance for roofing sheets, lumber, nails, and other assistance to repair the roof and replace displaced seats.

Mr. Boakye also appealed for support to facilitate the re-roofing of the Park, as much of the roofing had been in place for many years.

The Coronation Park, with a capacity of approximately 6,000, is a popular venue for hosting various sporting events, including Premier League and National Division One league matches, inter-school competitions, and serves as a symbol of community pride for the people of the Bono Region.

Barcelona failed to capitalise on results elsewhere in La Liga after a goalless draw at Athletic Bilbao which means they stay third in the table.

The Basque side dug in from the outset with a well-organised defensive unit, looking to play on the counter.

Joao Cancelo went closest to scoring for Barca but his 40-yard effort was cleared off the line by Yeray Alvarez.

With second-placed Girona losing at Mallorca, a win for Barcelona would have seen them move up to second.

Athletic’s gameplan worked to a point, denying Barcelona clear openings, but they were unable to pose any serious threat when they did get the opportunity to break.

Portugal full-back Cancelo was inches away from putting the visitors in front midway through the first half when he met Unai Simon’s clearance first time from just inside the hosts’ half.

The goalkeeper managed to backtrack to get a hand on the effort and Alvarez then desperately hooked the ball off the line.

The pattern of play remained the same in the second half with both teams building neatly up the field but struggling to execute the right pass in the final third.

With the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie to come against Napoli on 12 March, Barcelona boss Xavi will not have been pleased to have seen Frenkie de Jong and Pedri both leave the field with injuries, the latter reduced to tears when he took his place on the bench.

Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw at Valencia on Saturday offered Barcelona hope of cutting the gap at the top to just six points.

The draw does no favours for either side with Barcelona staying third and eight adrift of Real. Fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao have dropped further off the pace of the top four as they sit five points behind Atletico Madrid, who beat Real Betis 2-1 earlier in the day.

Burnley’s slim hopes of staying up suffered another setback as Bournemouth won in the Premier League for the first time in 2024.

Justin Kluivert set the Cherries on their way with a powerful finish past James Trafford after poor defending.

Burnley responded strongly with Neto producing an outstanding save to keep out Jacob Bruun Larsen’s free-kick while Vitinho headed a good chance over the bar.

Larsen also had a goalbound shot blocked by Adam Smith after Neto denied David Datro Fofana.

Josh Cullen’s disallowed goal – ruled out for a foul in the build-up – only added to the sense of frustration inside Turf Moor, before Antoine Semenyo wrapped up the points with a deflected finish in the 88th minute.

Burnley are 11 points from safety with 11 games left.

Bournemouth’s fifth away win of the season lifted them one place to 13th before four successive home games.

Pep Guardiola hailed Phil Foden as the “best player in the Premier League right now” after his second-half double ensured Manchester City came from behind to beat Manchester United at Etihad Stadium.

In a game packed with international stars, it was two local boys who provided the key moments.

The visitors had led through Marcus Rashford’s sensational eighth-minute strike from 30 yards.

However, in a contest City dominated, Foden took centre stage.

There was an element of controversy over his second-half equaliser. United boss Erik ten Hag was booked for arguing his side should have had a free-kick in the City half when Rashford went down under Kyle Walker’s challenge.

Contact was minimal and within seconds Foden had curled a superb shot past Andre Onana.

Foden then burst away from a static Casemiro to score City’s second from Julian Alvarez’s return pass before Erling Haaland rounded off the scoring in stoppage time, after the Norwegian earlier missed an open goal from barely three yards.

“It is the amount of games he is playing,” Guardiola told Match of the Day about Foden.

“He was always a talented player but now he is more mature and understands more the game, especially defensively. He can play middle, right, make moments and cut inside, play in the left, scoring from the left.

“What can I say? He is the best player in the Premier League right now for the amount of things he does. Unbelievable.”

It was City’s sixth win in seven meetings against United, who suffered their 11th Premier League defeat of the season.

More importantly, the result means Pep Guardiola’s side move to within a point of leaders Liverpool before next week’s trip to Anfield.

United remain in sixth in the table but are now 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and six behind Tottenham, in what could turn out to be a fifth Champions League spot, having played a game more.

Ghana striker, Antoine Semenyo was on the scoresheet in Bournemouth’s triumph over Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon at Turf Moore.

The match saw Dutch talent Justin Kluivert swiftly secure the lead for the visitors, finding the net just 13 minutes into the game, granting Bournemouth a favourable halftime advantage.

In a standout performance, Semenyo amplified the lead with a powerful goal, securing victory for his team just two minutes before the final whistle, capitalizing on an assist from Lewis Cook.

Semenyo’s impact on Bournemouth’s campaign has been undeniable. With five goals and two assists to his name in 22 appearances in the English Premier League, the 24-year-old forward has proven to be a pivotal asset for his team.

As the season progresses, Semenyo aims to sustain his impressive form, providing Bournemouth with a potent offensive edge.

Semenyo will hope to return to the scoresheet again when they host bottom-placed Sheffield United at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.

Ghana winger, Joseph Paintsil scored his debut Major League Soccer [MLS] goal during LA Galaxy’s dominant 3-1 triumph over San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.

The 24-year-old who joined LA Galaxy from Begina side, KRC Genk showcased his talents in just his second appearance for the club.

Paintsil wasted no time in making his presence felt, unleashing a precise strike from the penalty area in the 18th minute, courtesy of a well-executed pass from Mark Delgado.

Demonstrating his versatility, Paintsil not only found the back of the net but also played a crucial role as a provider just before halftime.

His adept setup allowed Dejan Joveljic to calmly finish, extending LA Galaxy’s lead to 2-0 and putting San Jose Earthquakes on the defensive.

Throughout the second half, Paintsil continued to be a driving force in LA Galaxy’s attacking endeavours, once again playing a pivotal role in setting up the team’s third goal.

His perfectly timed delivery found Riqui Puig, who capitalized on the opportunity to widen LA Galaxy’s advantage.

Paintsil’s stellar performance earned him a well-deserved ovation from the supporters as he was substituted after 63 minutes, paving the way for Gabriel Pec to maintain the team’s momentum.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has paid glowing tribute to former President John Agyekum Kufuor for starting the construction of the University of Ghana Stadium, which was commissioned on Friday to host the African Games 2023.

The Kufuor government started the construction of the stadium in 2003, but subsequent administrations abandoned the project.

As part of the infrastructure to host the 13th African Games in Ghana, the government resumed construction, re-grassing it and changing the athletics tracks to World Athletics-certified tracks, as well as a standard warm-up athletics tracks beside the stadium.

Speaking at the commissioning of the stadium on Friday, March 1, 2024, Dr Bawumia acknowledged the immense contribution of President Kufuor’s Government, and other stakeholders.

“I am particularly excited about the completion of the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, with added facilities, due to its chequered history.

“As we all know, the construction of this stadium started under the government of His Excellency President J. A. Kufuor over 15 years ago,” he noted.

“However, the construction of this stadium was completely abandoned by successive governments, until our government assumed office and decided to resume construction and the result is the beautiful edifice we are commissiong.

“I would like to thank former President Kufuor, for his vision to build a stadium for University of Ghana, the GETFUND for providing the initial funding, to the University of Ghana and to all those who have played various roles to ensure the completion of the stadium.”

Dr Bawumia added that as the University of Ghana celebrates its landmark 75th Anniversary, “there could not have been a more fitting monument for the Anniversary.”

“This has come at the right time; to host the African Games and also as a befitting legacy to the University and its community,” the Vice President added.

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri says “football is losing an extraordinary player” as a result of Paul Pogba’s four-year ban for doping.

The France midfielder’s ban from football was confirmed on Thursday.

Pogba said he will appeal against the decision and would “never knowingly” dope after tests found elevated levels of testosterone in his system.

“It’s very sad both on a human level and for football,” said Allegri before Sunday’s Serie A match at Napoli.

“We are losing an extraordinary player.

“I was lucky enough to work with him, coach him, and it’s very difficult to find players like him… he’s a fantastic guy.”

Pogba, 30, was a key midfielder in the Juventus side who won the Serie A title under Allegri in 2015 and 2016, after which he signed for Manchester United for a second time in a then-world record £89m deal.

Allegri went on to guide Juventus to five consecutive league titles before leaving the club in 2019.

He returned in 2021 and Juve re-signed Pogba on a free transfer the following year, but neither the manager nor the player have rekindled the success of their first stint at the club.

The 36-time Italian champions are currently second in Serie A, 12 points behind leaders Inter Milan, and have gone two seasons without a trophy under Allegri.

Pogba, who has made just one start and 11 substitute appearances in his second spell at Juve after being dogged by injuries, was tested randomly after their first match of the season on 20 August.

The positive result was confirmed by Italy’s national anti-doping tribunal following testing of a second sample in October. The anti-doping prosecutor’s office requested a four-year suspension.

Pogba said he believed the verdict was “incorrect” and he would appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Allegri told a news conference he had sent the 2018 World Cup winner a message on Thursday after the announcement of the ban, which runs until August 2027, when Pogba will be 34.

But the Juventus coach said he would not comment further on the case while “there is a procedure underway”.

LeBron James became the first NBA player to reach 40,000 career regular-season points in Saturday’s game against the Denver Nuggets.

But he described it as “bittersweet” after his Los Angeles Lakers side lost 124-114 to the defending NBA champions.

“Being the first player to do something, it’s pretty cool in this league,” said the 39-year-old, who scored 26 points on the night.

“You just know the history, you know the greats that have come through.”

James scored the historic basket with 10 minutes and 39 seconds remaining in the second quarter with a driving lay-up from the left side of the basket to give the Lakers a 37-32 lead.

The crowd gave James a standing ovation during a timeout and the ball he used to reach the milestone was removed from the game.

However, the Nuggets stretched their winning streak to six games thanks to 35 points from Nikola Jokic to leave James with mixed feelings.

“The main thing is always the main thing and that’s the win,” he said. “And I hated that had to happen in a defeat, especially versus a team that plays extremely well.

“We played some good basketball but weren’t able to close it out, so [it’s] bittersweet, but I enjoyed every moment on the floor.”

LeBron James drives to the basket to score his 40,000th regular-season point
Image caption: LeBron James made his NBA debut in October 2003

James became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in February 2023, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s long-standing record of 38,387 points.

The four-time NBA champion and four-time Most Valuable Player is in his 21st campaign and is the league’s oldest active player.

James said he did not know if another NBA player could reach the 40,000-point milestone.

“You have to play the game quite a while and have some good luck with injuries and things of that nature,” he said.

“You have to take care of your body. You have to be present on the floor and then you have to be productive as well.”

Lakers coach Darvin Ham was among those to pay tribute to James.

“Just happy for him. It was a hell of an accomplishment,” he said.

“Wish we could have got the win to cap it off. But my hat’s off to him. Amazing, amazing run that continues to this day.”

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle after being denied a late winner in Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw at Valencia.

The England midfielder, making his return from injury, thought he had headed home a cross deep into stoppage time at the Mestalla but the referee had already blown for full-time.

Real players surrounded the official in a chaotic aftermath and Bellingham was shown the red card before the players left the field.

It made for a dramatic ending to a compelling LaLiga clash in which the leaders had fought back from 2-0 down with two Vinicius Junior goals.

Valencia had stunned Carlo Ancelotti’s side by pouncing on two mistakes to score twice in quick succession through Hugo Duro and Roman Yaremchuk.

The result meant Real missed the chance to move nine points clear at the top and second-placed Girona will have the chance to cut the gap when they play Mallorca on Sunday.

It was an emotional night for Valencia, who were returning to action for the first time since a deadly fire in their city, with tributes paid to victims and other people affected before kick-off.

The game got off to a slow start as the visitors struggled to create any meaningful opportunities despite dominating possession.

It was not until the 23rd minute that Real caused any alarm in the Valencia box as Vinicius, returning to a ground where he was racially abused last season, went down under a challenge from Dimitri Foulquier. No penalty was given.

Valencia took the lead against the run of play in the 27th minute after Real lost possession.

There was an element of fortune about it as Foulquier crossed to the far post and Fran Perez miskicked his attempt to clip back across goal. Duro, who had not been expecting the ball, reacted quickly to head home.

Dani Carvajal then compounded the setback moments later with an underhit backpass that Yaremchuk seized upon to round Andriy Lunin and slot in.

Real recovered and Bellingham, back in the side after three weeks out, created a chance for Federico Valverde but Giorgi Mamardashvili was equal to his effort.

The pressure paid off in first-half stoppage time as a Carvajal cross took deflections off a defender and Mamardashvili and found its way to Vinicius for a simple tap-in.

Real upped the tempo after the break and Vinicius lashed a shot wide before Bellingham, who has enjoyed a stunning first season at the Spanish giants, wrong-footed the defence and forced Mamardashvili to save with his legs.

Diego Lopez brought a good save from Lunin at the other end but further Real pressure paid off when Vinicius rose to head in a Brahim Diaz cross.

There was a long delay late on after Valencia’s Mouctar Diakhaby suffered a serious-looking injury and was carried off on a stretcher.

Real had a scare in stoppage time when Valencia were awarded a penalty for a foul on Duro by Nacho but the decision was overturned by VAR.

It was not the end of the drama but Bellingham’s effort came too late to count.

Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif says the next Black Stars coach must be awarded not less than a three-year deal.

Following the removal of Chris Hughton from the coaching position due to the Black Stars’ disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, the team is currently without a permanent coach.

During Hughton’s tenure, the Black Stars suffered a defeat against Cape Verde in their opening match, followed by 2-2 draws with Egypt and Mozambique.

After the team’s early exit, a five-member committee was formed to suggest a coach to the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The committee has submitted its report to the Executive Council.

In an interview, Minister Ussif expressed his belief that granting a short-term contract to a coach does not promote team progress. He emphasized the importance of looking ahead and instituting changes.

“I have proposed that the next Black Stars coach be given a three-year contract or more,” Ussif stated on Asempa FM.

“Short-term contracts do not aid in team progression, and moving forward, there needs to be a change” he added.

Meanwhile, various reports in the media are suggesting that Otto Addo is the front-runner to be reappointed as the Black Stars coach.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for South Dayi Constituency, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has rendered a sincere apology to former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan.

This was after he alleged Gyan’s missed penalty against Uruguay in the quarterfinals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 2010 was due to his political affiliation to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Ghana’s potential to become the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals was dashed when Gyan failed to convert the penalty.

Dafeamekpor’s comments come shortly after the ex-Black Stars captain accepted to serve on Dr Mahamadu Bawumia’s manifesto campaign team for the 2024 elections.

However, after receiving backlash for his comments made about Ghana’s all-time top scorer, Dafeamekpor has moved quickly to issue an apology to Gyan.

In a statement posted on X, Dafeamekpor stated, “The Black Stars and other National Teams have iconically rallied & carried our passions, dreams and aspirations for glory to the world. Upon reflection & calls from people like Kenpong, I retract & unreservedly apologize to Asamoah Gyan, for my comments.”

Gyan, who officially retired from football in June 2023, boasts a remarkable career, having scored a record 51 goals for Ghana.

Axel Disasi scored a late header to rescue a point for Chelsea at Brentford in the Premier League.

Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken gave away a cheap corner and his side were punished as Disasi rose to head in Cole Palmer’s cross with seven minutes remaining.

Yoane Wissa scored a sensational acrobatic volley to put Brentford 2-1 in front, but they could not hold on for the three points.

Sergio Reguilon’s cross into the box was headed away before Frank Onyeka flicked the ball up and Wissa contorted his body to finish superbly.

Nicolas Jackson had earlier opened the scoring for the away side in the first half before Mads Roerslev equalised soon after the break.

Chelsea dominated the opening 45 minutes, with Jackson heavily involved.

The Senegalese forward was denied a tap-in thanks to Roerslev’s interception of Enzo Fernandez’s pass.

Jackson then went round Flekken after latching on to Fernandez’s through ball, but his weak shot was cleared with ease by Mathias Jorgensen.

He eventually found the net five minutes later, rising highest to bury a header from Malo Gusto’s pinpoint cross for his first league goal since mid-December.

Goals from Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Tino Livramento helped Newcastle overcome Wolves and register their first home win in the Premier League since mid-December.

Sweden international Isak nodded in at the end of a sweeping counter-attack involving Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes, whose left-footed shot deflected off Craig Dawson and into the striker’s path.

Eddie Howe’s team doubled their advantage when Jose Sa and Max Kilman failed to deal with Jacob Murphy’s low cross and Gordon pounced on the loose ball to fire home.

Wolves had the lion’s share of possession at St James’ Park but failed to test Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka until midway through the second half when half-time substitute Nathan Fraser’s low shot from the edge of the box was palmed clear.

Dubravka produced a superb stop to deny Pablo Sarabia moments later, but Livramento struck his first Newcastle goal in stoppage time to put the seal on the Magpies’ first home victory since their 3-0 win over Fulham on 16 December.

The victory lifted Newcastle up to eighth in the table, while Wolves dropped to 10th.

Tomas Soucek struck a stylish half-volley as West Ham scored twice in injury time to clinch a dramatic win at Everton.

The Blues had taken the lead when Beto – who had seen a first-half penalty saved – headed in at the back post shortly after half-time.

Kurt Zouma equalised for the Hammers with a header from a corner.

The game looked set to end in a draw but Soucek scored a stunning goal with his instep in added time before Edson Alvarez struck right at the end.

It gave David Moyes, who managed Everton from 2002 to 2013, a hat-trick of Goodison Park victories over his old club as Hammers boss.

Moyes’ side move up to seventh in the Premier League table while Everton are 16th – five points above the relegation zone.

The Toffees are also winless in 10 games, stretching back to a 2-0 victory over Burnley on 16 December.

With five draws and two defeats in 2024, this is their joint-longest winless run from the start of a calendar year in their league history.

Tottenham boosted their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League by staging a dramatic late comeback to beat Crystal Palace.

Ange Postecoglou’s side were heading for back-to-back defeats after Eberechi Eze’s opener until two goals in three second-half minutes turned the game around.

Timo Werner scored his first goal for the club by converting Brennan Johnson’s cross in the 77th minute before Cristian Romero headed in James Maddison’s cross in the 80th.

Captain Son Heung-min swept home two minutes from time to seal the three points, moving his side to within two points of fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Werner had failed to convert when played clean through in a forgettable first half in which the hosts failed to break down Palace’s stubborn defence.

Eze’s sweetly struck free-kick put the visitors ahead in the 59th minute and there were grumbles from the home fans as chances were missed early in the second.

But, to their credit, Spurs stuck to their task to inflict a first defeat on Palace manager Oliver Glasner.

Villa can regain their five-point cushion with victory in the late kick-off – a visit to Luton Town.

Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score a dramatic 99th-minute winner and send Liverpool four points clear at the top of the Premier League with victory at struggling Nottingham Forest.

As the game drifted past the eight added minutes announced by the fourth official, Nunez, playing his first game since suffering a muscle injury at Brentford on 17 February, found the bottom corner with a glancing header from Alexis Mac Allister’s cross, sparking bedlam on the Liverpool bench and in the stands.

While flares were lit in the away end and Jurgen Klopp celebrated wildly with his team, Forest players surrounded referee Paul Tierney at the final whistle.

Coach Steven Reid was shown a red card as they fumed at the decision to give Liverpool the ball after Ibrahima Konate went down with a head injury shortly before the goal.

Forest had possession when the game was stopped but the game restarted with the ball at the feet of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and the away side kept the ball, went down the other end and eventually found the winner.

It was Liverpool’s first league win at the City Ground since 1984 and ensures that they will be top of the table heading into next Sunday’s crucial match against champions Manchester City.

With the game goalless heading into the final seconds, and title rivals City and Arsenal still to play this weekend, Klopp’s side faced the prospect of falling to third by Monday night before Nunez’s last-gasp intervention.

Defeat for Forest leaves them just four points above Luton Town in the final relegation place having played two games more and with the outcome of their financial breach case still to be decided.

Forest had the best chance of a forgettable first half when former Liverpool forward Divock Origi’s through ball sent Anthony Elanga clean through but the attacker was denied by the outstretched left leg of Kelleher.

Luis Diaz and Andy Robertson came close for Liverpool either side of half-time before Elanga’s first-time shot fizzed wide at the end of a flowing Forest move.

As the away side continued pushed for a winner at the other end, clear chances were not forthcoming, but Liverpool kept going and were rewarded deep into stoppage time as Nunez expertly found the net.

Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, has voiced concern regarding the low turnout at Ghana Premier League matches, acknowledging a persistent issue within the country’s top-flight football arena.

In an interview addressing the matter, Minister Ussif underscored the enduring challenge of low attendance spanning previous seasons, a trend that has extended into the ongoing campaign.

He expressed apprehension about the declining attendance levels witnessed across various stadiums.

In a bid to tackle this issue and reignite interest in the league, the Minister unveiled plans for collaboration with the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA).

One proposed solution involves deploying National Service Personnel to aid clubs in bolstering their branding efforts and generating compelling content to attract more spectators to the stadiums.

Demonstrating his commitment to addressing the problem, Minister Ussif stressed the significance of this initiative, foreseeing its positive impact on increasing attendance and ultimately fortifying the league as a whole.

“I am concerned about the low turnout during Ghana Premier League matches but have engaged in discussions with the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) regarding providing assistance through National Service Personnel to support clubs with content and other aspects,” he said on Asempa FM.

“We have just commenced this initiative, and we believe it will yield the desired benefits in the long run,” he added.

Jordan Ayew, the Ghanaian forward for Crystal Palace, has clinched the club’s Player of the Month award for February.

This marks his second win of the Cinch Player of the Month trophy for the season, with his previous honour coming in August.

Ayew’s exceptional contributions to the team earned him over 54% of the total votes, affirming his popularity among the Crystal Palace supporters.

Last weekend, Ayew reached a significant milestone in his career, making his 200th appearance for Crystal Palace during a commanding 3-0 victory against Burnley.

He celebrated this milestone with a goal and an assist, taking his total goal contributions for the season to 10.

This notable performance was preceded by Ayew’s memorable goal against Everton at Goodison Park, which earned him a nomination for the Premier League Goal of the Month award.

Despite facing strong competition, including from new arrival Adam Wharton, Ayew’s consistent excellence on the field made him the standout choice for the Player of the Month award in February.

The 30-year-old aims to maintain his impressive form as Crystal Palace takes on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League later today.

Saudi Arabia, the only contender to host the 2034 World Cup, has formally launched its bid for the tournament.

The Gulf Kingdom became the sole bidder in October when Australia pulled out of the race hours before Fifa’s deadline for declarations of interest.

A Fifa congress will confirm the hosts later this year.

Saudi Arabian Football Federation (Saff) president Yasser Al Misehal says the bid is only possible because of the country’s “rapid transformation”.

Al Misehal added: “Telling our football story to the world is of massive importance.

“We’ve made unprecedented progress in both the men’s and women’s game and our bid is an open invitation to the world to join us on this exciting journey.”

Despite being the only bidder, Fifa regulations require Saudi Arabia to formally bid for the tournament.

The bid uses the slogan “Growing. Together”, which Saff says captures the bond between the “Kingdom, its people and world football”.

Saudi Arabia has invested around £5bn in sport since 2021, when the country’s Crown Prince made it a key part of his strategy to diversify the economy.

It has hosted several major sporting events, including in football, Formula 1, golf and boxing, while the country’s Public Investment Fund has launched the breakaway LIV Golf series, taken control of four Saudi Pro League clubs and purchased Newcastle United.

However, the Gulf kingdom has been accused using its investment in sport and the hosting of high-profile events to improve its international reputation – a process known as ‘sportswashing’.

It has been criticised for its human rights violations, the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, women’s rights abuses, the criminalisation of homosexuality, the restriction of free speech and the war in Yemen.

The Saudi government says the investment is boosting the economy, opening it up to tourism and inspiring people to be more active.

According to Fifa guidelines, countries bidding to host the event must commit to respect human rights.

Speaking to BBC Sport in December, Saudi Arabia’s sports minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal said claims of sportswashing against the country are “very shallow”.

“Any country has room for improvement, no-one’s perfect. We acknowledge that and these events help us reform to a better future for everyone,” he said.

It is widely expected that the 2034 tournament will be in winter to avoid the country’s extreme summer temperatures, as with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

It will also be the first time the expanded 48-team tournament will be hosted by just one country.

Morocco, Portugal and Spain are set to co-host the 2030 World Cup, with the opening three matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

The 2026 World Cup, the first to feature 48 teams, will take place in the US, Mexico and Canada.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says his side need to focus on tactics and not emotions in Sunday’s Premier League derby with Manchester United.

City, who won 3-0 at Old Trafford in October, are 15 points above United.

Both sides are in good form, with second-placed City unbeaten in 18 and United only losing once in 2024.

“What I learn from my experience in these types of games is to be more calm, relax, don’t talk about many things,” Guardiola said.

“Just focus on tactics and what you have to do to beat them, not about emotions – because emotions will be there, without doubt.”

This is the first derby since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner of United and said he wants to knock City “off their perch” within three years.

City have won five of the past six Premier League titles.

“The 80s was Liverpool, 90s United and now we have won seven Premier Leagues in the last 11 or 12 years,” said Guardiola.

“But in 50 or 60 years, there has never been one country where one team always dominates and controls everything. We will try in this organisation to extend this as much as possible for many years.

“Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his people know the diagnosis of their club. I don’t know anything about that club.

“If they said they need two or three years to be there, who am I to say the opposite?”

On Thursday, United boss Erik ten Hag said: “Our form – we are also on a good run. The spirit is very good, we are united. Now we have to make a good game plan.

“We will prepare well but our players are looking forward to it and I can smell it – I’m excited.

“We know we have to give everything and show a team performance.”

There will be full commentary of the game on BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday, with the build-up starting from Etihad Stadium at 12:00 GMT.

Lazio had three players sent off as they lost to AC Milan in Serie A.

Luca Pellegrini was the first to see red after fouling Christian Pulisic to earn a second booking.

Noah Okafor hit an 88th-minute winner for AC Milan from 16 yards after a double save from keeper Ivan Provedel.

Lazio had two players shown straight red cards in added time, with Adam Marusic dismissed for an angry reaction to the referee and Matteo Guendouzi for shoving over Pulisic.

Guendouzi was fouled by former Chelsea forward Pulisic and knocked the American to the ground in frustration to leave the hosts with eight men for the final seconds.

Six Milan players were booked and three other Lazio players were shown yellow cards in a fiery encounter.

AC Milan are third in the table, 13 points behind leaders Inter Milan, while Lazio – who face Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday – down in ninth.

Bayern Munich could end the weekend 10 points off the top of the Bundesliga after dropping points against Freiburg.

Christian Gunter fired the mid-table hosts into a lead with a fine 20-yard strike.

Bayern thought they had turned it round through Mathys Tel’s excellent curling effort and Jamal Musiala’s placed shot after a solo run.

But Lucas Holer struck an 87th-minute volley to snatch a point for the hosts.

“We played completely without structure,” said Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel on his side’s first-half performance. “We were not disciplined. We were not in our positions, we lost possession going forward and allowed them to counter-attack.

“It wasn’t a matter of will, we played recklessly for the first half hour.

“We did things that we’ve never trained, that we’ve never spoken about. We played like it was the 85th minute and we were a goal down.”

Bayern are now seven points behind unbeaten leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who visit Cologne in their game in hand on Sunday.

It could spell the end of the Munich outfit’s decade of total dominance in German football. They have won a record 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles.

Their poor season has already led to the news Tuchel will leave at the end of the season.

If Bayern fail to beat Lazio on Tuesday in the Champions League last-16 second leg – they lost the first tie 1-0 in Rome – they are likely to end the season without any silverware.

It was a frustrating night for England striker Harry Kane, who missed several chances for Bayern and failed to build on his run of three goals in two games.

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has responded to claims by Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor that the penalty he deliberately miss the penalty at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

He alleged that, Gyan’s crucial missed in the quarter-final game against Uruguay, which would have made Ghana the first African country to play in the semi-final of the World Cup, was politically influenced.

Speaking to Radio XYZ, Mr. Dafeamekpor alleged that, the former Black Stars captain has been a lifelong supporter of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and did not want glory for their rivals.

In a response, Asamoah Gyan said the NDC MP is just seeking attention for his autograph.

“Maybe he wants an autograph. Don’t worry. I will sign one for him soon,” the former Sunderland forward quipped on X (formerly Twitter).

The former Black Stars captain has come under a barrage of attacks after he was named a member of the NPP manifesto committee.

The 38-year-old will head the party’s sub-committee on Youth and Sports under Vice President and NPP flagbearer, Dr Bawumia.

In spite of the attacks, Asamoah Gyan said he is focused and ready to contribute his quota to nation building.

As Africa’s top scorer at the World Cup, with six goals to his name, he is resolved to bring his experience on board to revive Ghana’s football.

José Peseiro, the head coach of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, has left his role following the expiration of his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

In a statement released on X, the Portuguese coach expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the NFF. It was a pride and honour to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfilment.”

Peseiro’s initial contract with the NFF ended just before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

He agreed on an extension until the end of the tournament after reducing his salary from $70,000 to $50,000.

Despite leading Nigeria to the AFCON final, where they lost 2-1 to the host nation Ivory Coast, both parties decided to part ways.

Peseiro thanked the NFF and expressed his gratitude to those who made his tenure memorable, including Sir Amaju Pinnick, President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary Dayo Enebi, and all the staff and players.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Sir Amaju Pinnick (the president who signed us), President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary Dayo Enebi, the NFF, all the Staff, and especially all the PLAYERS, with whom leading has been a great pleasure.

Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has accused Asamoah Gyan of deliberately missing a crucial penalty during the 2010 World Cup quarter-final against Uruguay.

In their second Mundial appearance, the Black Stars had an opportunity to advance to the semi-finals, with the score tied at 1-1.

However, Gyan’s penalty struck the crossbar, ultimately leading to Ghana’s loss in the ensuing penalty shootout.

Mr. Dafeamekpor, who is a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) suggested that, Gyan’s supposed deliberate miss was driven by his political allegiance to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Radio XYZ, Dafeamekpor claimed, “I believe Asamoah Gyan intentionally squandered that penalty because it was under the NDC’s tenure. It is now clear to me that he missed the penalty in the 2010 World Cup and the African Cup deliberately so that the NDC government would not receive the acclaim.”

He continued, “Asamoah Gyan is now associated with the Bawumia campaign team. That’s a significant issue because when a public figure becomes partisan, I can confidently say it is for political reasons that he missed that penalty, ensuring the NDC government did not receive recognition. It is truly distressing.”

Mr. Dafeamekpor’s remarks came after Gyan was recently named as part of the New Patriotic Party’s 2024 manifesto committee.

These comments have further fueled the ongoing criticism about Gyan’s impartiality after accepting the role in Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team.

Despite the controversy, Gyan holds an impressive record such as being Africa’s all-time top scorer at the World Cup with six goals and being the Black Stars’ all-time top scorer with 51 goals.

Jordan Ayew’s brilliant strike against Everton has been nominated for the Premier League Goal of The Month for February.

The Ghana striker scored the goal during Crystal Palace’s 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

Ayew’s magic unfolded as he deftly received a pass from his teammate, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and unleashed a powerful shot into the right side of the net.

The goal was a significant moment for Ayew, marking his return from representing the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

He continued his excellent form by contributing a goal and an assist in Palace’s 3-1 victory over Burnley.

Ayew isn’t the only Crystal Palace player in the running for the prestigious award. Teammate Jefferson Lerma’s fantastic strike against Chelsea has also made the shortlist.

Adding to the Ghanaian presence in the nominations is Kobbie Mainoo, the talented Ghanaian-English midfielder recognized for his winning goal for Manchester United against Wolves.

Ayew is looking ahead to maintain his impressive form as Crystal Palace gears up to face Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League clash on Saturday.

Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Friday, March 1, 2024, commissioned the University of Ghana stadium (Legon Stadium), at a colourful ceremony in Accra ahead of the 13th edition of the African Games to be staged in Accra.

The 11,000 capacity facility which will serve as one of the venues for the competition has been completed as Ghana wraps-up preparations ahead of the opening of the Games on March 3.

Commissioning the stadium, the Vice President said “The history of the African Games is tied with the history of the continent.

“I believe it is common knowledge that the Great Pan African and First President of the Republic of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah is a founding member of the Games. The Games thus inhabit the Spirit of Africa and Pan Africanism.

“Our theme for this edition of the Games, “Experience the African Dream”, is thus steeped in the core values of unity, independence, political and economic cooperation, as well as historical and cultural awareness.”

He added that “this is the age of the African Renaissance. The continent is tagged by Trade Finance Global with the potential to shape geopolitics and world economics for decades to come.

“This potential would not marginally materialize to propel our people into prosperity without conscious and intentional action on the part of everyone, especially leadership across all social divides and facets of society.”

The United Nations, he said, had “Identified sports as the most appropriate vehicle for sustainable socio-economic development and made a pronouncement as such in 2018. Combined with the youthful bulge of our demographic dividend, the opportunity is here, and the time is now. Ghana is ready to host the world.

“It is in recognition of many social and cultural benefits inherent in sports that the Government of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic, took the bold decision to bid for and win the rights for Ghana to host this edition of the African Games. This visionary step has resulted in the construction of international standard sporting facilities such as the University of Ghana Sports Stadium and Rugby Field and the Borteyman Sports Complex.

“Construction of these facilities have not been easy, but we know that the returns would be immediate and substantial”, he added.

Over 13,000 elite athletes, sports technocrats, technicians, and officials, including volunteers are expected to participate in the African Games that ends on Saturday March, 23.

The African Games is a celebration of the continent’s greatest sporting talents who gather and compete in an atmosphere of camaraderie, unity and celebration the cultural diversity that is uniquely African.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Bibiani Gold Stars, Kwasi Adu, has encouraged the players to secure a victory against Asante Kotoko.

Gold Stars is set to face Asante Kotoko later today at the Baba Yara Stadium in the matchday 19 of the ongoing 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season.

The Miners have been struggling to secure wins in their away games throughout this season.

However, Kwasi Adu, ahead of the game, has urged the players to change this narrative and to secure their first away win of the season against Kotoko.

Adu emphasized that the team should approach the match with a positive mindset and determination to secure a win.

He stated, “We should have it at the back of our minds that we are going to Kumasi to pick something.

“It is not easy to go and pick something from the Lion’s den but if you go with a positive mindset, you will get what you want.”

He then added, “Go and win the match for me.”

Bibiani Goldstars holds the 13th position on the Ghana Premier League table with 21 points after 18 matches into the campaign.

The game against Asante Kotoko is scheduled to kick off at 15:00 GMT.

Mauricio Pochettino believes his Chelsea players have learned to “understand each other” after what he called the hardest week of his Stamford Bridge tenure.

The extra-time defeat to Liverpool in last Sunday’s Carabao Cup final denied his young side, who are 11th in the Premier League, the chance to lift silverware in what has so far been a trying season.

They were then given a scare by Championship side Leeds on Wednesday, requiring a last-minute goal from Conor Gallagher to win through to the FA Cup quarter-finals having fallen behind early and then been pegged back to 2-2 in the second half.

There has been much criticism of the nature of the loss at Wembley, coming after the team missed a host of chances during normal time and failed to win out against a Liverpool side beset by injury and featuring four inexperienced academy graduates by the end of the game.

Pochettino was asked whether the fallout from that defeat has given him his toughest spell in the job since taking over in July last year.

“Maybe yes,” he admitted. “We feel very disappointed. We had faith to win, we were so close. After 90 minutes we were the better side. In the last 15, and 20 minutes we created many big chances to score and win the game.

“Then the energy dropped and we didn’t keep the energy after 90 minutes. That’s why we lost the game. We’re all really disappointed because we put in too much energy to try to win. I think we deserved it.

“We met after the game (Sunday), in a different place away from Wembley. The players started to feel the good spirit. (They were) disappointed and (it was) painful.

“But Monday and Tuesday we were very open. All the players wanted to play. Some were tired with some problems, but everyone wanted to play against Leeds. That speaks highly about the squad.

“They are learning, to compete all together, to feel each other, to know how they behave in this level when it’s a final, with not too much experience.

“They start to understand each other, that’s the most important thing. After seven or eight months, we already know the profile of the players, and how they behave.

“But it’s important for them to know each other, to know how they will react under high pressure and high stress.”

Defenders Thiago Silva and Marc Cucurella will be assessed ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Brentford at the Gtech Stadium.

Silva has missed the last five games with injury while Cucurella has not featured since early December.

However, Pochettino confirmed that a hamstring injury is likely to keep Christopher Nkunku out for around four weeks.

The 26-year-old had to wait until December to make his Chelsea debut after joining from RB Leipzig in the summer, having required surgery on a knee injury picked up in pre-season.

He has made only seven league appearances as he has struggled to attain match fitness, scoring twice.

“It’s bad luck to suffer again a setback,” said Pochettino. “It’s tough for a player that hasn’t played too much this season.

“He came from Germany with some problems. He was so good in pre-season. It’s a difficult season for him. It’s difficult to accept.

“I say it’s bad luck because I don’t have the information and knowledge about medicine to say why this type of injury happens.”
