Ningo-Prampram MP Samuel George Nartey is confident that Ghana’s economy will withstand any potential fallout from American businesses withdrawing from the country in response to the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2021.

The contentious legislation, which prohibits LGBTQ activities and criminalizes their promotion, advocacy, and funding, was unanimously passed by Parliament on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, after three years since its introduction.

The bill, awaiting presidential assent, imposes sanctions on individuals involved in LGBTQ activities, with penalties ranging from six months to three years for engaging in same-sex acts and three to five years for promoting, advocating, or funding LGBTQ activities.

Speaking with News Central TV based in Nigeria, the Ningo-Prampram legislator asserted, “American businesses in Ghana are not in Ghana because of LGBTQ+,” emphasising that “they are in Ghana because they make profit.”

Sam George emphasised Ghana’s sovereignty, asserting that Americans should refrain from interfering in local politics.

He urged African nations to stand firm in their decisions, pointing out that Western countries engage in business with nations like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, despite their strict penalties for same-sex activities, including the death penalty.

Former head of the Political Science Department at KNUST, Dr. Amoako Baah, has appealed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo not to sign the proposed anti-LGBT+ Bill into Law.

Dr. Baah argued that, the Bill infringes on individual rights and freedoms, criticizing the drafters for overlooking these concerns.

“The Bill is not good, not because I support LGBT, but because of how they wrote the Bill. Those who wrote the Bill, I wonder what they learned to be able to write that Bill.”

He further highlighted the potential infringements on fundamental rights such as freedom of speech, opinion, and association, stating, “We have freedom of speech, freedom of opinion, freedom of association, and there is more freedom, but based on how those people wrote the bill, they have infringed upon all these freedoms.”

Questioning the morality of punishing individuals based on religious doctrines, Dr. Baah said, “If God says he doesn’t want homosexuals, fine, I don’t also support them, but has God come down to kill someone? So why would you decide that someone should be arrested or be punished? Nana Addo shouldn’t sign it; if they like, they should call him gay; it won’t matter because those who are intellectuals would know that there are issues with the bill.”

Dr. Baah also raised concerns about the bill potentially criminalizing certain sexual practices within heterosexual marriages.

He questioned whether the government would intrude into people’s bedrooms to determine their sexual activities, especially regarding anal sex between married couples.

“Right to privacy has been infringed; if your child is a homosexual and you don’t report him, that is also a sin. Why? Which kind of law is written like this? Is it because men are having anal sex with women or what? And if that is it, I can tell you that a lot of men have anal sex with their wives, and I know what I am talking about; a lot of men do that. So are we going to arrest such people also, or what?” he said in on Accra based Neat FM.

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has vowed it will not hesitate to advise congregations on how to cast their votes on December 7 polls if President Nana Akufo-Addo fails to assent the anti-LGBTQI+ bill into law.

Speaking on Adom FM Burning Issues, the General Secretary, Reverend Immanuel Tettey stated the bill will help to uphold the values that are important to the people of Ghana.

He, therefore, noted none of the religions and Ghanaians at large will sit aloof and accept anything that frowns on morals and values.

Reverend Tettey made these comments in reaction to the Finance Ministry’s caution for the President not to sign the bill which was passed on Wednesday February 28, 2024.

Even though Akufo-Addo has said he is yet to receive the controversial bill, the Ministry on March 4 said it could lead to severe repercussions on the country’s financial support from international organisations like the Bretton Woods Institutions.

But Reverend Tettey has emphasised the importance of upholding Ghana’s unique cultural, and family values and has urged the President to serve the interest of Ghanaians by assenting to the bill.

“The 275 MPs in parliament did not get there by themselves; they are representatives of the people and we are all saying we don’t like LGBTQI+ activities.

“But if they decide not to listen to us, we will advice ourselves in the upcoming election. We will ask our people to reject anyone who wants to ignore our moral, values and impose what we don’t like on us,” he cautioned.

The Founder and Leader of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Christian Kwabena Andrews, has announced that he will choose his running mate from the Western Region.

The decision stemmed from the fact that, the Region in the 2020 elections, gave GUM, the highest votes, indicating the desire of ‘Westerners’ to see most of the projects and programmes by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah revived.

Mr Andrews, popularly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom declared at the weekend during a meet the press and stakeholders’ engagement in Takoradi in the Western Region, to talk more about the party’s principles and philosophies aimed at lessening the economic burden of the Ghanaians.

He said, “I have asked the people to engage with the chiefs and religious leaders and whoever they select from the Region becomes my running mate in the 2024 presidential elections”.

The GUM flagbearer said the party was an epitome of hope, restoration, and revival of the Ghanaian economy and social life and prayed that Ghanaians supported it to achieve its vision for the country, adding, “GUM is not a small party, therefore let’s continue to support the party to the high office of the land.”

The GUM party, Mr Andrews said, intended to run an all-inclusive government to “save” the country from “demons and witches” destroying the fortunes: oil, gold and other natural resources meant for the holistic development of the Nation.

He urged Ghanaians to be alert to the happenings in the country, reason through it very critically and make the best of decisions come 2024.

He added that it was time Ghanaians used their brains very actively to avoid being used.

Mr Andrews said, “We have no monies to spend, but I entreat you to be very circumspect, digest the policies presented to you, as against taking tokens and peanuts to sell the very foundation and future of the country into the hands of some selfish individuals who avoid the collective good for individualism.”

The GUM party, born out of the ideologies of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah first appeared on the ballot paper in 2020, as a first timer, during which Mr. Andrews secured 105,548 of the valid presidential votes cast, representing 0.08 percent, and thus placing third to the NPP and the NDC.

The party’s core principle was that every Ghanaian must arise to contribute impactfully to the development of the country to turn around the country’s economic, political, and social structure.

Mr Andrews believed that there should be a new Ghana with unity and peace, industrialization, free ports, employment for all, strict monitoring, and punishment for corrupt practices.

The Coalition of Muslim Organisations, Ghana (COMOG), has said Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia should be worried about President Akufo-Addo’s posture on the  anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

According to the Chairman on Media and Research Committee, Mohammed Shamsudeen Shaibu, Akufo-Addo is ruining the political fortunes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer with his actions.

Mr Shaibu made these comments on Adom FM Burning Issues following Akufo-Addo’s announcement to await a Supreme Court ruling on the bill which is being challenged before making a decision.

Speaking at the New Year greetings event with members of the Diplomatic Corps at Peduase, the President emphasised Ghana’s commitment to upholding its Human Rights record.

However, Mr Sahibu has questioned why the ruling of the apex court must determine whether or not Akufo-Addo will assent to the bill.

In his view, the majority of Ghanaians are in support of the bill, hence the President’s delay tactic is unnecessary.

“Across the house, we never saw any MP against the bill so why should the president delay and consider someone is going to court on what basis?

“Is it to derail or unnecessarily delay the process so that he will not sign before he leaves office? Vice President Bawumia should be worried because his political fortunes is being ruined by the actions of Akufo-Addo,” he stated.

On February 28, 2024, Parliament unanimously approved the bill that criminalises LGBTQ+ activities, as well as their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Those found guilty could face a jail term ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while those promoting and sponsoring the act could face a jail term between 3 to 5 years.

Despite intense call for Akufo-Addo immediately sign the bill, he says it is yet to reach his desk.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has touted his government’s achievements, stating in all good conscience, he has not betrayed the mandate the good people of Ghana conferred on him.

Akufo-Addo was addressing members of the Diplomatic Corps at the 2024 News Year’s Greetings event held at Peduase.

“I can say in all conscience that I have not betrayed the mandates of the good people of Ghana conferred on me. All that has been done is partly due to the support I have received from the International community,” he stated.

He emphasised that his track record in the various sectors is evident for all to see.

“I want to state with all modesty, I am exceedingly proud of my record in office and the considerable achievements that have been recorded in all sectors of national life these last seven years; several of which have been very difficult as a result of global developments.

“Whether it is in the management of the economy, education, healthcare, roads and railway development, digitalisation, infrastructural development, Agriculture and industrial transformation, the protection of Ghana’s territorial integrity and security, the fight against corruption, the battle against environmental degradation, the response to COVID-19 pandemic, entrenching the tenets of good governance and the rule of law, upholding respect for international law and multilateralism; the record is there for all to see,” President Akufo-Addo noted.

The President also used the occasion to reiterate his administration’s commitment to ensuring peaceful elections this year and ensure that the free will of the people manifests.

“As you all know this year is an election year, on 7th December, Ghanaian people will elect a new President and a new Parliament; the term of the present Parliament expires at the end of the year and I am in the last year of the permissible eight years that the citizens can exercise the functions of President,” he added.

His government he touted is clear about its obligation and duty to ensure that the impending elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace and security, in full transparency and respect for the electoral laws.

“I am confident that the Security Agencies will be alive to to their responsibilities and will ensure that the free will of the Ghanaian people, their choice of national leadership will be manifest.

“Ghanaians cherish our reputation as the beacon of democracy in Africa and that the forthcoming elections will reinforce this reputation,” he emphasised.

Ghanaian musician and politician, Rex Omar, has expressed his willingness to accede to a political position if he is given the opportunity.

He made this statement in an interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z on Saturday, March 3, 2024.

Rex Omar, a staunch member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), explained that he would gladly accept the appointment if the task falls within his ambit.

“I will [accept a political appointment] because now I think I am of age and I think if I am given any appointment that is within my capacity, I will be able to contribute positively to the development of this country,” he told the host Kwame Dadzie.

Asked if he would want to hold a position at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, he answered that “when we get to that road, we will cross it because at the end of the day, all these positions are political appointments and so long as you are smart and intelligent and you know what is going on in this country, wherever they put you, you can deliver if you really want to.

Expressing his opinion on the state of Ghana’s democracy, the ‘Abiba’ hitmaker said governance of the country will be better if the term for the presidency is reviewed.

He said the current 4-year term is not enough for any government to make a meaningful impact on the economy.

“Because America does elections every four years, we also jump on the bandwagon but the question is, America’s democracy is over 200 years. We just started, okay. So look at our situation,” he said.

He suggested that a six-year term would give room for the government in power to perform creditably.

“I think it [the four years] is too much. I would have wished if we can go six years in one term. Because if you are given six years you use one year or one and half years to set up your government. If four years, five years you are not able to do anything it means you can’t do anything. There is no need for you to go for a second term.

The whole situation is, look at our scenario. After election, the first year is now that the government is being formed, the appointments and all these things. By the time the government settles to actually start to roll out its programme, you are getting to two years,” he added.

Rex Omar rose to prominence in 1989 with the Aware Pa album which also included the track, Wodofo Ne Hwan? Following this, in 1992 he formed Nakorex together with fellow highlife artistes Nat Brew (now Amandzeba) and Akosua Agyapong, the group’s name being an acronym made up of the first letters of each member’s name.

He later pursued a solo career, released great albums, performed in and outside Ghana, won a number of awards and earned nomination in Kora Awards in 2004.

Rex Omar is not the first person to have made this statement. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor also made a similar statement in 2022 while speaking at a seminar on reviewing Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

This event was organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), at his residence in Peduase, in the Eastern Region.

The former president explained that he came to the realisation after he was invited to Malaysia and got to see how much developmental growth the country had made, even though at the time of independence. it was on par with Ghana.

Pollster, Ben Ephson has predicted that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will choose Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, as his running mate.

Mr Ephson’s forecast stems from extensive research he conducted and insights gathered from individuals connected to Dr Bawumia’s camp.

He highlighted that, his research findings point to Dr Opoku Prempeh as a candidate who could secure maximum votes for Dr Bawumia in the Ashanti Region, a crucial stronghold for the NPP.

Renowned Ghanaian pollster, Ben Ephson

In an interview with JoyNews on Monday, March 4, the pollster expressed his strong conviction that Dr Bawumia’s selection of Dr Opoku Prempeh as his running mate would not only be strategic but also greatly beneficial for the party in the upcoming December elections.

“From the research and my interactions with some members of the NPP and what Dr Bawumia’s team is said to have done, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh will give Dr Bawumia maximum votes amongst the possible running mates from the Ashanti Region. So I bet Dr Bawumia will choose him (Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh) as his running mate,” he said.

He emphasised that, a Bawumia-Opoku Prempeh ticket presents a stronger combination compared to the John Mahama-Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang ticket.

On November 4, 2023, Vice President Dr Bawumia clinched the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer position, setting the stage for the upcoming December polls.

While Dr Bawumia has yet to officially unveil his running mate for the impending elections, analysts have been busy speculating on potential candidates.

Among those frequently mentioned by analysts are Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. John Kumah, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Joseph Osei Owusu, and esteemed clergyman and former Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Prof. Opoku Onyinah.

Additionally, Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare and Communications Minister Ursula Owusu Ekulful have emerged as notable contenders in the running mate selection process for Dr Bawumia.

IMANI Africa’s latest edition of social media analysis spanning from February 11th to February 26th, 2024, has revealed intriguing insights into public sentiment towards the two major political parties in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The survey is a comprehensive study of over 10,000 tweets, Facebook posts, TikTok and YouTube videos, Instagram posts, podcasts, and news websites.

The report suggests that the leader of the NDC, John Mahama, has experienced a reduction in negative sentiments even though his reach on non-social media web sources has seen a significant drop.

Below are some details of the report:

Performance Comparison: Analyzing the social media performance of the presidential candidates, it’s observed that former President Mahama experienced a reduction in negative sentiments by about 8.27% during the period.

However, his reach on non-social media web sources saw a significant drop of 6.78%. On the other hand, Vice President Bawumia saw a notable 14% increase in social media mentions, accompanied by a significant rise in negative mentions by 7%.

Growing Interactions: The report also establishes the fact that despite a few fluctuations, the number of interactions is steadily growing.

The NDC is gradually expanding its audience on social media, with more mentions and interactions growth compared to NPP/Bawumia-related content, although the absolute numbers still favor the NPP.

Stable Positive Sentiment: Despite the period under review, the positive public opinion and sentiment remain stagnant at 10%, with an equal proportion between NPP and NDC mentions.

Both parties registered exactly 10.22% positive sentiment out of the total sentiments analyzed, indicating no significant upsurge in positivity triggered by any events or pronouncements from either candidate.

Rising Negative Sentiment: However, negative sentiment towards both party candidates increased during this period.

Negative mentions of the NPP experienced a higher percentage increase, rising from around 21% to just over 28%, while negative sentiment towards the NDC saw a more modest increase of approximately 4%.

This suggests a general increase in negativity towards both parties, with the NPP bearing the brunt of growing negative mentions.

Impact of Ministerial Reshuffle: Despite a ministerial reshuffle during the period, it did not significantly alter the level of positivity towards the NPP but rather triggered negative sentiments overall.

This raises questions about public faith in politicians and their ability to influence public opinion positively.

Dominance in Social Media Mentions: Despite the challenges, the NPP maintained its lead in social media mentions.

The ministerial reshuffle did not diminish the NPP’s dominance in mentions and social reach, with more commentators scrutinizing their policies and the messaging of their presidential candidate compared to the NDC.

The analysis underscores the dynamic nature of public sentiment on social media and its potential impact on political discourse and electoral outcomes.

As Ghana’s election approaches, understanding these trends becomes increasingly vital for political strategists and candidates seeking to engage effectively with the electorate.

The Ministry of Finance has urged President Akufo-Addo not to sign the recently passed Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into law.

In a press release issued on Monday, March 4, the Finance Ministry cautioned that such action could lead to severe repercussions on the country’s financial support from international organisations like the Bretton Woods Institutions.

The statement highlighted concerns that the expected US$300 million financing from the First Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (Budget Support), currently awaiting Parliamentary approval, might not be disbursed if the bill is signed into law.

Additionally, ongoing negotiations on the Second Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (Budget Support), amounting to US$300 million, could be suspended.

The Ministry emphasized that these potential outcomes could result in a significant loss of financial resources, leading to a financing gap in the 2024 budget.

To address these challenges, the Ministry called upon the President to engage with religious bodies to discuss the implications of signing the bill and to establish a robust coalition and framework for supporting key development initiatives.

“The Presidency may have a structured engagement with local conservative forces such as religious bodies and faith-based organisations to communicate the economic implications of the passage of the ‘Anti-LGBTQ’ Bill and to build a stronger coalition and a framework for supporting key development initiative that is likely to be affected.”

It also added that “the President may have to defer assenting to the Bill until the court rules on the legal issues tabled by key national stakeholders (CSOs and CHRAJ).”

On February 28, 2024, Parliament approved a bill criminalizing LGBTQ activities and prohibiting their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Under the legislation, individuals convicted of such acts could be sentenced to 6 months to 3 years in prison, while those promoting or sponsoring such activities could face 3 to 5 years behind bars.

The Bill’s passage has sparked criticism from various stakeholders, including Virginia Evelyn Palmer, the Ambassador of the United States to Ghana.

The Electoral Commission (EC) will receive nominations of candidates for this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections from September 9 to 13 in a major countdown to the climax of the political season.

This will be followed by the balloting for positions on the presidential ballot paper on September 23, 2024, and the parliamentary balloting on September 24, 2024.

Furthermore, the EC expects to declare the results of the 2024 presidential polls within three days of the voting exercise, if everything goes according to plan.

In its programme of activities for the 2024 general election, obtained exclusively by the Daily Graphic, the EC will conduct a voters’ registration exercise from May 7 to May 27, 2024, and proceed with a nationwide exercise to replace missing voter ID cards from May 30, 2024.

The registration exercise will, however, be preceded by 56 days of public education on the exercise from April 1 to May 26, 2024.

Per the schedule, available to the Daily Graphic, the EC intends to submit the provisional voters’ register to the political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024, and mount an exhibition of the voters register between July 15 and 24, 2024.

The final voters register is expected to be submitted to the political parties between August 30 and September 5, 2024.

Meetings

In between the datelines, the EC — per the schedule — will hold meetings with stakeholders outside the political parties frame, and also engage the public through its “Let the Citizen Know” series.

Sources within the EC said this exercise was intended to ensure that all stakeholders understood and appreciated the efforts towards a free and fair electoral process in order to eliminate any tendencies for suspicion and mistrust.

The exercise, the source said, would be in line with the EC’s mandate to ensure and enhance open and transparent operations of the electoral processes.

The sources at the EC told the Daily Graphic that the EC would be holding its Special Voting for selected professionals on December 2, five days before the main polls.

It will be opened for security agencies and accredited media practitioners who would be performing duties during election day on December 7, 2024.

All the dates are, however, subject to review, the sources indicated to the Daily Graphic.

Results

The sources said although there was no law requiring the EC to declare the results within a specified period, the EC intended to ensure that it would be able to declare the presidential results within a maximum of three days.

The sources indicated that the Regional Collation Centres would be maintained to announce the results at the regional level.

Former Oti Regional Minister, Joshua Makubu says he was a bit surprised about his removal from office.

He indicated no concerns were raised about him during his tenure in office as a regional minister for redress.

He therefore finds it strange when the President told him he could not be part of his government after the ministerial reshuffle on the 14th of February.

Joshua Makubu was speaking to Joy News’s Peter Senoo two weeks after his removal from office.

Meanwhile, some residents in the Oti Region have commended President Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffling.

They said the removal of Joshua Makubu as Oti Regional Minister will provide equal opportunities for others to serve and bring the needed development.

President Akufo-Addo last month relieved some Ministers and Deputy Ministers of their portfolios as part of strategies to strengthen governance.

Mr. Makubu was removed and was replaced by Daniel Machator.

In a significant development for the South Tongu District Assembly in the Volta Region, members have confirmed Innocent Tettey as the District Chief Executive (DCE).

Tettey, whose initial nomination faced rejection, has now been overwhelmingly endorsed with an 87.72 per cent ‘yes’ vote, securing 50 out of 57 votes.

The confirmation of Tettey comes on the heels of President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo’s revocation of the former DCE’s appointment, signalling a new chapter for the district’s governance.

The confirmation ceremony, witnessed by notable figures including the District Chief Executive for Afadjato and the dean of Municipal and District Chief Executives, Hon. Etornam Flolu, alongside regional party executives, chiefs, heads of departments, party loyalists, and supporters, underscored the community’s engagement in the democratic process.

With the participation of all 40 elected assembly members and 18 government appointees, the confirmation exercise saw Tettey receive resounding support, with 87.72 per cent in favour and only 12.28 per cent opposing.

Following his swearing-in, Tettey expressed his commitment to inclusive governance, emphasizing his open-door policy for all stakeholders invested in the district’s development. He pledged to work tirelessly towards elevating South Tongu to municipal status, a promise that resonated with the community’s aspirations.

Togbega Dugbaza Nakakpo, the Paramount Chief of Tefle Traditional Area, urged Tettey to prioritize listening to all voices in decision-making, fostering unity and progress.

Victoria Dzeklo, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, expressed optimism about the district’s future under Tettey’s leadership, foreseeing the continuation of stalled developmental projects.

A Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has blamed Ghana’s underdevelopment on the poor quality of leadership structures in the country.

According to him, the country has not experienced significant infrastructural and economic growth due to a lack of selfless leaders. He describes this as a “leadership crisis.”

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe on March 3, he explained that recent leaders are often ethnocentric, which makes it impossible for them to look beyond their tribes and address matters of the country as a whole.

“The wrong thing about Ghana that we have today is that we are in a leadership crisis. If you look at where we took off from independence, we had great potential with leaders who had vision; whose vision went beyond their ethnic group to move beyond Ghana and other parts of Africa and that you cannot single out.

“We cannot mention names without Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. He looked way beyond his contemporaries in terms of ideas, in terms of plans, in terms of development, and the rest of them,” he told host, Emefa Apaw.

Dr Asah-Asante, juxtaposing the 67-year-old country to its toddler years, said that those stages were the best, as the then leader Dr Nkrumah saw the nation as a whole, hence his vision to build the Ghana we envisage.

However, he added that after those days, the political system began to decay, which translated into abuses in all sectors and consequently affected our identity as one people.

“After independence, we saw the politics of decay. Politics of misgovernance, misrule, human rights violations, and the rest of them.

“And you realise that all these things have affected our identity as a people and lowered our desire to fight as one people for one cause. Today, you have a large army of youth without jobs, we have a lot of natural resources given to us but we don’t tap them and develop them for the benefit of human society.

“The eco-system that God gave us, that we need to protect and defend, has been bastardised and we have a government that sits down as if it is on sabbatical leave,”he added.

The Political science lecturer added that the situation had worsened to the point that moral values including integrity have been compromised for wealth.

In light of this, he stressed that this could only end if there was some internal evaluation.

“If we wanted to fix this we need soul searching. As Aristotle said, the unexamined life is not worth living. We must come to that realisation that things are not good enough and that there is a need to have a paradigm shift,” he added.

Former President, John Dramani Mahama says education is crucial to the country’s development since the sector attracts a greater chunk of budgetary allocations by every government.

He said the sector continuous to produce human resource capital for accelerated development, thus it is heartwarming when individuals complement the government’s efforts to educate the youth.

Mr Mahama said this on Saturday at the 40th Anniversary of the enstoolment of Togbe Dzegblade IV of Adaklu Kodzobi in an address delivered on his behalf by Mr Kwame Agbodza, the Member of Parliament for Adaklu.

He commended Togbe Dzegblade for setting up an educational fund to help brilliant but needy students in the area.

The former President entreated students to take advantage of the Fund to upgrade themselves.

He said before the political dispensation, chiefs were at the forefront of leadership who ensured the development of their communities.

Mr. Mahama said Togbe Dzegblade’s stay on the stool for 40 years without chieftaincy disputes that translated into the rapid development of the community was commendable and congratulated him for the feat.

Togbe Gbogbi Atsa V, Paramount Chief and President of the Adaklu Traditional Council said Togbe Dzegblade had helped to shape the fortunes of Adaklu across all spectrums of development.

“I commend you for your hard work and excellent demonstration of neighbourliness that have helped to establish and maintain peaceful coexistence with other traditional areas,” he stated.

Togbe Dzegblade, in his welcome address, gave a catalogue of development projects undertaken by the community without the government’s assistance.

They included a 20-seater water closet toilet, classroom blocks, pipe-borne water and a one-storey Information Centre.

The Education Fund would not only support brilliant students, but also those in apprenticeship and skills training, he said.

He said he would soon establish a Centre for Fabrication and Crafts Construction to sharpen the talents and skills of the youth interested in those fields.

Professor Kenneth Egbadzor, the Head of the Agriculture Science Department, at Ho Technical University, who chaired the function, reminded the youth that the path to success was education and entreated them to prioritise it no matter how rough it might be.

Solidarity messages were delivered by the National Democratic Congress, the University of Health and Allied Sciences, chiefs from other traditional areas, and religious leaders.

An 11-member board was inaugurated to run the Togbe Dzegblade Education Trust Fund.

Mr Mahama donated GHC10,000 in support of the Fund whilst Mr Agbodza also donated GHC5,000 in addition to the GHC20,000 he had earlier donated.

Present were Mr Ganyaglo, a former Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Phanuel Kade Donkor, former DCE for Adaklu, heads of tertiary institutions and leaders of political parties.

Agboti Yao, a renowned artiste from Togo, entertained the gathering with good music.

The Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo has outlined the National Democratic Congress (NDC) commitment to implementing an advanced digitalization system for Ghana if elected, surpassing current efforts led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During a public lecture organized by the Coalition for Restoration (CFR) at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on February 28, 2024, Mr Adongo stressed the need for a digitalization strategy that minimizes human intervention in public service delivery, reduces corruption, and combats crime.

Mr. Adongo criticized the government’s digitalization agenda as limited to “stand-alone improvement tools,” arguing that it has not significantly addressed corruption or improved efficiency.

“You said John Mahama was using manual rudimentary systems and you have come to digitalise. If you have come to digitalised, shouldn’t you be better than John Mahama in corruption perception? Your best, 43 is John Mahama’s worst – 43,” he stated.

Describing digitalization as the integration of digital technologies across society and the economy, Mr. Adongo highlighted its potential to enhance security systems, stimulate economic growth, and foster innovation.

He contrasted the NDC’s proposed digitalization system with current practices, envisioning a model akin to European standards, where police could access comprehensive public records during routine stops.

The lecture aimed to analyze Ghana’s economic performance under the current administration and outline the NDC’s proposed solutions, should they win the 2024 General Election.

Mr. Adongo credited past NDC administrations for transformative communication and infrastructure projects, pledging to implement economic interventions to bolster resilience, create jobs, and prioritize local participation across key sectors.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of responsible borrowing practices to prevent adverse impacts on citizens holding government bonds.

The special aide to O. B Amoah, the current Member of Parliament for Akuapem South, Eric Apeadu Yeboah, has emerged as the winner in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary for the constituency.

On Saturday, March 2, 2024, Mr. Yeboah secured 267 votes out of the total valid votes cast, which represented 49.3%, securing him the parliamentary candidacy for the constituency.

According to reports, 574 delegates gathered at the Presby Women’s College of Education in Aburi to vote in the Akuapem South constituency parliamentary primaries in the Eastern Region.

Initially, the party leadership had postponed the election following the withdrawal of the incumbent Member of Parliament, O.B Amoah, from the contest.

Subsequently, the Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Frank Aidoo, was included on the ballot.

Competing against Aidoo were Eric Yeboah Apeadu, Eric Samuel Annor Mensah, and Kwame Ofori Gyau.

The atmosphere, initially calm, became tense when allegations arose that one of the candidates had camped some delegates in a nearby room. However, swift intervention from security personnel and regional executives prevented the situation from escalating.

Frank Aidoo polled 69 votes, Eric Samuel Annor Mensah 54, and Kwame Ofori Gyae 152.

The Eastern Regional Secretary of the party, Tony Osei Adjei, who oversaw the elections, outlined plans to foster unity among party members.

He refuted claims that the delay in conducting the primaries would impact the party’s prospects in December.

In his acceptance speech, Eric Yeboah Apeadu expressed gratitude to the delegates for their support and urged them to work diligently for the party to secure victory in the upcoming elections.

The Member of Parliament for the area, OB Amoah also stressed the need for unity.

A prominent figure within the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has voiced his reservations regarding the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, recently passed by Parliament.

Expressing his concerns, Mr Otchere-Darko criticised the perceived severity of the bill, arguing that it fails to align with the needs of the Ghanaian populace and the fundamental rights of individuals.

He advocated for a public discourse to weigh the merits and drawbacks of the proposed legislation, highlighting the importance of engaging in an open dialogue on such sensitive matters.

Below is the post

“Ghana’s Parliament, in which is vested the sovereign will of the people, has democratically passed a harsher anti-LGBTQ Bill. Yes, democratically! In fact the threat of being unseated for standing for the rights of gays, etc, certainly created its own culture of silence in the House! But, it is the decision of Parliament and one which enjoys huge popular support in the country. The world must understand that.

“But, Ghanaians must also understand that it comes with consequences. Choices have consequences. We expect the media and the politicians to be fair to the people by letting them know the pros and cons of this decision to impose stiffer penalties against gays, etc. We also expect those who believe the Bill is constitutionally wrong to do what is right and go to court.”

“That is democracy! Our institutions of democracy are still strong and alive. Let’s have faith in our democracy. Let’s respect the choices we make and their consequences and believe in the process. Ghana remains a sovereign state, with cultural norms that cannot be wished away but must be respected.

“I still believe, though, that we can balance our traditional family values with our traditional values of tolerance and diversity. That’s the Ghanaian way. The Ghanaian culture. The Ghanaian spirit. Our history. Our DNA. That is Ghanaian.”

As Ghana gears up for the upcoming general elections, the children of Ghana are earnestly appealing to various political parties to prioritize the preservation of the country’s peace and democracy.

The children are also urging political parties to conduct themselves in a peaceful and tolerant manner while safeguarding Ghana’s rich culture and traditions.

This plea was eloquently expressed by selected school children who addressed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other participants at the 2024 Independence Day Awards ceremony held at the Accra International Conference Center.

The event aimed to honour 46 students who demonstrated outstanding performance in the 2023 BECE exams.

In addition to advocating for peace and democratic values, the children pledged to dedicate themselves to academic excellence in order to become future leaders.

They also appealed to the government to implement stringent measures to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on the environment.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Rev. Ntim Fordjuor, highlighted the substantial investments made by the Akufo-Addo administration in the education sector and emphasized the positive outcomes resulting from these investments.

He noted that despite critics initially focusing solely on the Free SHS initiative, the government’s total investment in education amounted to GH¢114 billion between 2017 and 2023.

Of this amount, GH¢12.9 billion was allocated to Free SHS, with the remainder allocated to various other areas of education, particularly early childhood education.

Rev. Ntim Fordjuor emphasized the significant improvement in literacy rates, citing that now 38% of class two pupils can read, compared to only 2% under the previous government.

The former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu is skeptical about the impact the running mate of former President John Mahama will make in the party’s quest to win the December general elections.

In his view, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman given her age might not help appeal to the youth.

Mr. Amidu’s comment comes after National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer named her a running mate for the 2024 elections.

He has submitted her name to the National Executive Committee and the Council of Elders of the party for scrutiny.

But Martin Amidu in a post hoped Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s choice would do magic for the opposition party.

He feared her choice might affect the NDC’s fortunates in the 2028 general elections.

“Let us hope that should Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang be the presumptive nominee John Mahama has submitted to the NDC in his communication of 27 February 2024, she would be stronger than another tested younger candidate from the NPP for the 2028 election should the NDC win the 2024 elections as already arrogantly predicted. And old age from my experience in my seventies has everything to do with Nana Akufo-Addo’s mishaps as President of Ghana” Mr. Amidu added.

The former Attorney General urged the leadership of the NDC to be “strategic” ahead of the December elections.

“The NDC must in its strategic, tactical planning and evaluation remember that, the first four years after 2024 within the present messy economic dispensation is not going to be an easy tenure for anybody to put money in the peoples’ pockets as one of the NDC’s young lawyers tried to deceive the electorate recently in the media. The 2028 elections even if John Mahama could contest would not be a walkover for him, let alone when a new face has to be presented by the NDC. The preceding arguments are made upon the assumption that the NDC can win the 2024 presidential elections for which there is no certainty” Mr. Amidu stated.

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, says no part of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill (Anti-LGBTQ Bill) infringes on the laws in the 1992 constitution.

Speaking on Newsfile, on Saturday, he pointed out that many individuals who oppose the bill by arguing that it contradicts the provisions of the 1992 constitution, have failed to specify the exact sections.

However, Sam George stated that though Article 17 ensures that all persons are equal before the law and not discriminated against, sub-section four gives Parliament the power to enact laws reasonably necessary to provide aid for the implementation of policies and programs aimed at addressing social, economic and educational imbalances in the Ghanaian society.

“This is a social issue and so Parliament is within the same Article 17.4 exercising its right that the constitution has conferred on us to deal with the social issue. It says for the matters relating to adoption, which is in this bill, marriage is in this bill, divorce, burial, and the evolution of property. But clearly, parliament has not acted ultra vires the constitution,” he said.

The Ningo Prampram MP added that many of the restrictions in the bill are already legislations which have been aggregated into the Anti-LGBTG bill.

“If you take the Children’s Act of Ghana today, it prohibits anybody who is not a heterosexual from being allowed to adopt or foster a child. That is in the Children’s Act. Now, you put that provision in this law and the professors and the gay lobbyists have not found the Children’s Act offensive to the Constitution. But as soon as you put it in the LGBTQ bill, it becomes offensive to the Constitution.”

“The Marriage Act of Ghana does not recognize a marriage consummated between a man or persons of the same sex. We put that in this bill. Boom, it becomes unconstitutional. Why? There is a new definition for unconstitutional?” he quizzed.

This comes after Parliament faced opposition from some people after passing the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, on Wednesday, February 28.

Among other things, the bill punishes those who take part in LGBTQ sexual acts, as well as those who promote the rights of gay, lesbian or other non-conventional sexual or gender identities with time in prison.

Although a section of the public have welcomed the bill, others including CHRAJ have raised many concerns including discrimination against people and their freedoms as stated in the constitution.

However, Sam George noted that Article 21 lists the general fundamental freedoms people can enjoy including freedom of speech and expression, belief, thought and others.

He says it is in parliament’s right to pass laws to deal with people who are teaching or propagating a doctrine that exhibits or encourages disrespect for the country’s values.

Former Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and lawyer, Freddie Blay, has recounted his traumatic arrest and imprisonment years ago.

According to him, it was an awful and painful experience.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli, the ace politician narrated the reason behind his arrest, saying it was not valid because he did not commit any offence to warrant his incarceration.’

“Honestly, I did nothing that should have gotten me even arrested. What happened was that they were looking for Kweku Baako and a few friends who they thought were a danger and a rival movement to the then Rawling’s government, which was taking over power from this country. Kweku Baako had come to visit me because the place was becoming a bit dangerous, and he’s been advised to leave town.

“He wanted to go to Abijan by road. So, he asked my permission, and I said, Why not? I have a house in Takoradi; he can go and live there and continue his journey. Not that they were looking for him officially, but he really felt threatened,” he reminisced.

Unfortunately, Mr. Blay’s kind gesture contributed to his apprehension because he was suspected of being an accomplice of Kweku Baako’s team.

“I was kept at the barracks for about two to three months and sent to Ho Prisons, where I stayed for about seven more months, and then brought to Usher Fort for about a month or two. Afterwards, I was freed. I was happy to be freed because the experience was bad.”

“They gave me severe beatings, and fortunately, they saw Kweku Baako in my house, arrested him, and started shooting in the house. At that time, my wife, who was then my girlfriend, and we were getting closer to marriage had a miscarriage there and then because of the way they were shooting around. They carried myself and Kweku Baako back to Accra and put us in custody just because he was my friend and had been kept in my house,” Mr. Blay further narrated.

As to whether he was told what crime Kweku Baako had committed, the former NPP chairman replied, “No.”

However, the trauma he encountered never deterred his ambitions towards politics, as he strived to be one of the most renowned politicians in Ghana.

Freddie Blay became the chairman of the NPP in 2018.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of defunct UT Bank and UT Holdings, Captain Prince Kofi Amoabeng (rtd) has thrown his weight behind former President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2024 general elections.

According to Mr. Amoabeng, although he has always supported the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the past, it is time for him to give the former President a chance to lead the country again.

Speaking in an interview on Kofi TV, the business mogul said his decision is based on his 7-year experience since the NPP took office in 2016.

“I wasn’t NDC as such. In fact, my sister was the MP for our area and she was Deputy Minister for Education until the recent reshuffle and of course I have to support my sister. So people in the NDC think I am NPP but the thing about this is that my genuine friends are in the NDC even though I didn’t support them in the past

“I think we made a wrong experiment and next time I have to make the right choice. So now knowing Mahama and knowing what the NPP has done, I think I have to go fully behind NDC and Mahama to see what he can do for us in his second coming.”

The assertion by Mr. Amoabeng affirms earlier comments he has made regarding his disappointment in the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

While speaking in an interview on Starr FM, the businessman stressed that the NPP has demonstrated that they are not better when it comes to the governance of the nation.

The retired Captain explained that Ghanaians had high hopes in the NPP but they have disappointed the nation.

“I think one thing most Ghanaians say and I agree with them is that we had high hopes for the NPP. Because we thought at the time that the NDC had disappointed us and of course it is easy to narrate all the problems that we were going through at the time.

“But certainly, the NPP has shown that they are not a better alternative and it is even worse. They will say it is because they took my bank, but forget it,” Mr. Amoateng stated.

Meanwhile, Mr. Amoabeng joins the tall list of chiefs, celebrities and personalities who have endorsed the candidature of former President John Mahama since he announced his decision to contest the 2024 general elections.

Independent presidential aspirant and founder of the Movement for Change, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has promised to make Central Region, the new international financial services center across West Africa if elected President.

The move, he stated will position the region to be at par with Greater Accra and Eastern regions.

Alan Kyerematen made this commitment during his visit to Kasoa New Market on March 1, 2024.

He urged the people to for the first time ignore both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and vote massively for his movement to win power.

“Central Region has voted for the NPP and NDC for almost 32 years yet there is not enough development in the region. If I am voted into power, the Central region will become the new financial services center not only for Ghana but for the whole of West Africa. We have to get something that will also make the Central region rise among regions such as the Greater Accra and Eastern,” he said.

Dr. Dam Ankrah, an independent presidential aspirant, has strongly criticized President Akufo-Addo State of the Nation’s Address, describing it as self-congratulatory.

He said the President failed to address the pressing economic issues facing ordinary Ghanaians.

In a response to the President’s speech delivered to Parliament, Dr. Ankrah highlighted a myriad of weaknesses in the Ghanaian economy that have left the population struggling and poorer than ever before.

Below are his critic of the address
Weaknesses:

  1. High inflation rate, which has been persistently above the target range of 6-10%.
  2. Persistent fiscal deficits, leading to a high public debt burden.
  3. Low revenue generation, with tax revenue as a percentage of GDP being lower than
    the average for sub-Saharan Africa.
  4. High interest rates, which have been above the target range of 8-12% for an
    extended period.
  5. A weakened cedi against major currencies, leading to high import costs and
    inflationary pressures.
  6. Low private sector investment due to a lack of confidence in the economy.
  7. High unemployment rate, particularly among the youth.
  8. Dependence on aid and loans from international organizations.
  9. Inadequate infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and energy facilities.
  10. Corruption and lack of transparency in government operations.
  11. Inequality in income distribution and access to social services.
  12. Low productivity and competitiveness of the domestic private sector.
  13. High cost of doing business, leading to low investment and job creation.
  14. Persistent energy shortages and power outages.
  15. Political instability, with frequent changes in government.
  16. Lack of effective coordination between different levels of government.
  17. Delayed implementation of policies and projects.
  18. Insufficient funding for key sectors such as education, health, and agriculture.
  19. Brain drain due to the lack of opportunities for skilled workers in Ghana.
  20. Limited access to finance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
  21. Inadequate public participation in decision-making processes.
  22. Low levels of financial literacy among the general population.
  23. Limited use of technology and innovation in key sectors.
  24. Weak enforcement of regulations and laws.
  25. Persistent gender inequality, with women being underrepresented in key
    decision-making positions.
  26. Limited access to quality education and healthcare services in rural areas.
  27. Environmental degradation due to illegal mining and logging activities.
  28. Lack of effective collaboration between the public and private sectors.
  29. Weak implementation of anti-corruption measures.
  30. Insufficient focus on research and development.

Dr. Ankrah’s analysis of the state of the nation pointed out significant challenges, including high inflation rates, persistent fiscal deficits leading to a heavy public debt burden, low revenue generation, high interest rates, a weakened cedi against major currencies, low private sector investment, high unemployment rates especially among the youth, corruption, inadequate infrastructure, inequality in income distribution, and a lack of transparency in government operations, among many others.

The independent presidential aspirant commended the people of Ghana for their resilience and forbearance in the face of what he described as governmental incompetence.

Dr. Ankrah emphasized the urgent need for systemic change to address these deep-rooted issues and improve the quality of life for all Ghanaians.

He pledged to focus on centricty and overhaul the existing system to create a better future for the citizens of Ghana.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Dr. Dam Ankrah’s bold critique of the state of the nation’s address underscores the need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to tackle the economic challenges plaguing the country.

His commitment to changing the system and addressing the fundamental issues affecting the population sets the stage for a potentially transformative campaign ahead of the upcoming election.

It remains to be seen how Dr. Ankrah’s message will resonate with voters and influence the political landscape in Ghana.

Parliament has been reconnected to the national grid after the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) task force disconnected the Legislature.

The development was over the House’s GH₵23 million debt owed the distribution company.

The chamber of Parliament was plunged into darkness, as well as the MPs’ offices, resulting in staff and members being stuck in elevators.

Prompt intervention by fire service officers was required to rescue those trapped in the elevators.

But Parliament has since settled more than GH₵10 million of the debt and has been reconnected.

Thursday’s power outage took place while the legislators were debating President Akufo-Addo’s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Outgoing Deputy Minister for Finance, Abena Osei-Asare was on the floor defending the President’s address when power went off.

It triggered chants of “Dumsor, dumsor!” from the Minority side of the house.

This development comes as many Ghanaians are already complaining of erratic power supply.

Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaign team, Dan Botwe has said flagbearer of the Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has nothing to offer Ghanaians.

Having been Vice and President for eight years, he believes the NDC leader is bereft of ideas.

Mr. Botwe made the comment in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM monitored by Adomonline.com.

He said even after being elected NDC flagbearer in May 2023, Mr. Mahama is yet to come out with an innovative idea ahead of the December elections.

“I am not convinced that we have seen anything innovative from the NDC or [John Dramani] Mahama. You have held power and were rejected, and you had eight years with a whole team to present something new and distinct to Ghanaians, and you are talking about a 24-hour economy?” he scoffed.

Given his track record, Mr. Botwe is convinced Ghanaians will retain the NPP and vote massively for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be President.

Two brothers clashed on the floor of Parliament over erratic power supply known in local parlance as ‘dumsor’ while debating President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address.

John Abdulai Jinapor, the Ranking Member for the Committee on Mines and Energy, criticised government for failing to provide funds to purchase fuel to power the Thermal Plants.

This, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP claimed is to blame for the unstable power across the country.

But his younger brother, Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources pooh poohed his claim.

He said government is working around the clock to ensure a stable power supply.

Mr. Jinapor also MP for Damongo maintained that, the current power situation is better than what was experienced under the erstwhile Mahama administration.

Savannah Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sulemana Iddrisu has appealed to sons and daughters of the region not to turn it into a breeding ground for violence and tension all in the name of attending funerals.

Mr Sulemana said before politics there were Kagbenye (descendants of Ndewura Jakpa), hence partisan politics should not destroy the beautiful bond between them.

It would be recalled that on Sunday, February 25, 2024, there was a scuffle between NPP and NDC supporters at the final funeral rites of the late Queen mother of Busunu, Busunuwuriche Azara Seidu at Businu, a suburb of West Gonja in the Savannah Region where security personnel had to fire warning shots to defuse tensions and ensure law and order.

Some high-profile politicians from the two sides, like former President John Dramani Mahama, the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema-Opare, the Member of Parliament of Damongo, Abu Jinapor, and the Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jebril including some former government appointees were all in attendance at the funeral when the confusion broke out.

Recounting a similar incident between supporters of NPP and NDC during the seventh-day funeral rites of the late Yagbonwura, Tuntumba Sulemana Bore Essa II at Damongo where he (Sulemana Iddrisu) single-handedly intervened and restored peace, he bemoaned such occurrences and appealed for calm and unity among both parties’ supporters.

“What do we gain as NPP and NDC supporters? Or is politics superior to Kagbenye; if not, let’s revisit the unity and peace of our forefathers. It’s shameful and very embarrassing for us to allow others to come in and cause the problems and disappear and our name is smeared with all the negative tags.”

Professor Kalamonia maintains, “We have seen how politics has divided and destroyed families in some other regions and we shouldn’t allow that to happen to us here because we are Kagbenye” he insisted.

He added that, as a party Chair, he believes in fairness and wouldn’t allow any bad blood in the name of politics.

He, however, warned the first National Vice Chairman of NDC, Sofo Azorka not to repeat the alleged transportation of vigilante boys known as ‘Hawks’ [Azorka’s Boys] in NDC party T-shirts to funeral grounds in the region to create chaos.

He commended the Savannah Regional Chairman of NDC, Seidu Imoro for distancing himself from the incident as a true son of the Kingdom who also believes in fairness.

In recounting the incident at Busunu, Mr Iddrisu Sulemana said, “Assuming you were seated before our team arrived, why were they chasing almost everybody away but allowed Azorka who came with a bus full of people from Tamale? The former president couldn’t say a word because his people embarrassed him. And what happened was a total embarrassment to us all”, Mr Sulemana Iddrisu lamented.

Alhaji Sulemana Iddrisu further stated that the event which was allegedly turned into a political event by the NDC gave way to the display of such uncalled-for behaviour instead of praying for somebody’s, Mother, or sister’s departed soul.”

Mr Sulemana expressed dismay at seeing how his opponents continue to turn the funerals of high-profile sons and daughters in the region into political campaign platforms.

“As you can see, the NDC party’s colours were all over and their leaders were very comfortable watching and smiling. No. Let’s learn as people and protect our image as a family”, Prof Kalamonia appealed.

He also appealed to the leadership of both sides to put measures in place to curtail any future occurrences in the region.

The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has shared extensive achievements chalked by the ruling government in Zongo communities over the past seven years.

Dr. Bawumia made the presentation, numbering over 200 to the National Muslim Council who called on him and his campaign team, to present to him their proposal for consideration into his 2024 Manifesto.

Vice President Bawumia speaking during the meeting with the National Muslim Council delegation.

The National Muslim Council is made up of various stakeholders in the Zongo and Muslim communities, including the Muslim Caucus of Parliament, and their proposals touched on developmental issues in education, health, and other social issues.

Responding to the NMC after receiving a copy of their proposal, Dr. Bawumia said the NPP has demonstrated unquestionable commitment to the progress of the Zongo Community in the past 7 years by instituting a statutory development vehicle for Zongo Development.

A group photograph of Vice President Bawumia and his team and the National Muslim Council delegation.

“Until recently, politics in the Zongos was reduced to the provision of rice and sugar and that was it. We were not discussing policies in Zongo politics and since I got into politics, I thought this should change, that is why we have focused more on policies and structures for the Zongo communities,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“We spoke about sustainable development for Zongo communities with policy structures, and we established the Zongo Development when we got the opportunity. They have done so much in the area of educational infrastructure and scholarship, health, entrepreneurial support, astro turfs, and many others as you have seen,” he added.

“Our idea coming into office was that the most important area to focus on to develop people is education. So we really focused a lot on education across the country, and in Zongo communities, through the Zongo Development Fund, we have built quite a number of classroom blocks, rehabilitated some, and offered tertiary education grants and scholarships to many brilliant but needy students.”

“In addition to this, our Free SHS policy has offered opportunities to many, including females, to have access to secondary education.”

As part of the meeting, a comprehensive infrastructure and other development projects in Zongo communities, with names of towns and regions they are located, were projected to the delegation.

Dr. Bawumia thanked the delegation and reiterated his commitment to the development of Ghana through policies and structures, and also assured them that his campaign and manifesto teams are ready to consider inputs from the NMC, and other stakeholders, for inclusive development.

New Patriotic Party (NPP) members in the La Dadekotopon constituency have said they would not allow the party to impose a parliamentary candidate on them.

According to them, the selection of a parliamentary candidate should be done through a competitive process rather than imposition.

This comes on the back of speculation that the party leadership intends to declare and impose a “certain person” as the PC on the constituents.

The group at a press conference said a fair and respectful contest is the only viable way to foster unity to break the eight-year cycle.

The NPP members also stated that “taking a decision of imposition would deny the people of La the right to choose their own PC.”

“We hope and believe the party led by the National Chairman, Regional Party led by the Regional Chairman and Secretary will not fail the aspirations of the NPP fraternity in the La Dadekotopon Constituency to be involved and be part of the choice of their PC. We also will urge our Constituency Chairman for La Dadekotopon to assist and ensure that the right decision is taken” they added.

The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasised the importance of private schools as partners with the government in providing quality education for Ghanaian children.

Speaking at the launch of the 2024 annual week celebration of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools, Mr Mahama applauded the significant contributions of private schools to the educational sector over the years.

He described them as trailblazers and pacesetters introducing new teaching techniques and procedures into the system. The former president cited the Montessori curriculum as an example, which he said was first introduced by private schools before some public schools replicated the methods to boost teaching and learning.

Mr Mahama, who is leading the NDC to the December presidential and parliamentary elections, further stated that private schools are more effective in handling special children because of their teacher-to-pupil ratio.

He explained that, public schools have high numbers, making it challenging for teachers to attend to all children, especially those with special needs. Private schools, he noted, are therefore crucial to the education sector.

Mr Mahama assured the association of private schools that an NDC government would prioritise education and bring together all stakeholders in the industry to review the entire education structure from the basic to the tertiary level.

He stated that his government will from 2025 invest heavily in basic education to ensure a strong foundation for the education sector.

Regarding secondary education, the NDC leader promised to include private secondary schools in the free SHS programme, as many of them have the necessary infrastructure and human resources to support the programme.

Mr Mahama referred to a recent Edu-Watch report highlighting the burden still shared by parents and the government at the secondary education level, with parents still bearing about 77% of the cost of educating their children despite implementing the free SHS policy.
