Kingsley Okyere, the father of a first-year student at Aburi Girls Senior High School (SHS) who died after complaining of stomach pains has said management cannot be absolved from the unfortunate incident.
Mr Okyere is alleging negligence on the part of the school led to the death of his 16-year-old daughter, Stacy who had no medical condition.
According to him, his checks have revealed his daughter reported ill at 12 p.m. unfortunately, not a word was said about it to the family until evening.
“The school killed my child. I received a call at 8pm on Sunday 4th February from my daughter’s housemistress. She asked me to come and pick my daughter up to the hospital, because she was sick.
“I even felt it was too late, but I still decided to go. On my way the woman kept calling almost every two minutes. I was even angry because I expected her to at least send my daughter to the hospital first before calling me,” he narrated in an interview with Accra-based TV3.
The distraught father claimed he rushed to the school but was met with an unpleasant and shocking situation.
“When I got to the school, my daughter was lying on the floor unconscious with the housemistress seated and her mates had surrounded her. My wife started screaming and wailing. I was so shocked and the sight of my daughter suddenly made me weak,” the heartbroken father said.
Determined to save his daughter, Mr Okyere, Stacy was rushed to the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital but was unfortunately pronounced dead.
“When we arrived at the hospital, I was told she was brought in dead,” he said almost in tears.
The father has raised serious questions about the welfare of students are demanding an independent probe into the matter amidst threats to sue the school.
“Why did they take my child’s health insurance if they can’t take her to the hospital when sick? Would they have waited for me to come to the school if I was in Bole-Bamboi?” he questioned.
Reports indicate Stacy who was at Edinburgh House was admitted to the school about a month ago.
Meanwhile, the school management is yet to comment on the incident five days after media reports with the body is also in police custody, pending autopsy.
Advocacy organisation, Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) is demanding that the Ghana Education Service (GES) speak on the matter to bring closure.
