The Catholic Bishops Conference has threatened to punish the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming election if President Akufo-Addo refuses to sign the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into Law.

This stance is maintained despite concerns raised by the Finance Ministry, warning that such a move could jeopardize Ghana’s chance of receiving GHS3 billion from the World Bank.

In the 5-page document, the Ministry explained that “for 2024 Ghana will lose US$600 million Budget support and US$250 million for the Financial Stability Fund.”

“This will negatively impact Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and exchange rate stability as these inflows are expected to shore the country’s reserve position.

Over the next six years, the Ministry explained that “Ghana is likely to lose US$3.8 billion in World Bank Financing.”

But the Catholic Bishops insist the bill must become law.

According to Very Rev Fr Clement Kwasi Adjei though concerns over whether or not to incarcerate suspects are welcome, “it doesn’t mean that the LGBTQ activities, we should support it.”

“We will speak and we will continue to keep speaking against what we think is wrong. If the President refuses to sign, and you know the implication for him [Nana Akufo-Addo] and his party. [I’m referring to] elections, voting… these things must not be hidden. We work in the villages, people are listening.

It comes in the wake of warnings by the United States of dire implications for the Ghanaian economy after Parliament enacted a Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill.

Already, some human rights groups in Ghana have threatened to head to the Supreme Court if President Akufo-Addo gives assent to the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values bill passed on Wednesday.

On the back of all these, the Finance Ministry is urging the President to engage stakeholders including faith-based organisations to communicate the bill’s implications.

Aside from that, it called for effective engagement with conservative countries including Arab countries and China.

“This could help trigger resources to fill in the potential financing gaps to be created.”

The Minority in Parliament has called for a probe in expenditure totaling GH¢68.5 million spent on photocopying past questions for WASSCE candidates in 2020 and 2021.

The Ministry of Education is alleged to have spent GH¢33.6 million in 2020 and over GH¢34 million in 2021 for this purpose, utilizing single-source procurement methods.

Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Norgbey, speaking to the media, stressed the need for a thorough investigation by the Special Prosecutor to address what the caucus perceives as possible corrupt activities.

“We cannot countenance this, and this is fraud. If this is not corruption, what else will be corruption? A photocopy to cost GH¢78 per paper, GH¢59.10 per paper, totaling GH¢68.5 million, what are we doing? And so, we in the Minority are taking strong exception to this, and we are saying that the Special Prosecutor must look into this matter” he added.

Ghana’s Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor continues to partake in major summits and meetings at the ongoing Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Convention marketing Ghana’s sustainable and vibrant mining industry and by doing so wooing investors into the country by spiking their interest and exhorting their minds to the plethora of reasons that make Ghana a perfect destination for mining.

On Monday, 04 March 2024, Hon. Jinapor joined twenty two (22)other Ministers responsible for Mines and Natural Resources, captains of the mining industry, Anglo American Associations, Euro Asia Resources Group and civil society organisations to explore and exchange knowledge on the future of the industry in the wake of the global warming and the shift towards green minerals.

The event dubbed International Mines Ministers Summit was structured in way that saw the ministers and other stakeholders being empanelled to address various sub-themes that falls under the main theme which is “Striking a Balance for Success: Responsible Mining and the Energy Transition.”

In his contributions to Session One of the Summit which was themed “Sharing a Path to Success: Building a framework for collaboration”, Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor espoused the far-reaching policy directives being implemented by the Ghana government, the strong and resilient partnership between the government and the mining companies through the Ghana Chamber of Mines and the shift from ‘digging and shipping’ and value addition.

He laid specific emphasis on the importance of strong collaborations between government and large scale mining companies serving as the fundamental and solid rock on which the successes for a mutually beneficial and serene mining industry is done.

He also underscored the commitment of the government to responsible and sustainable mining practises, not just at the mineral discovery stage but throughout the entire value chain, describing its ‘non-negotiable.

He disclosed that the paradigm shift in Ghana’s mining policy from mere production of minerals to value addition is perfectly encapsulated by the recent Lithium agreement with Atlantic Lithium in which government ensured the establishment of refinery plant in Ghana and the opportunity of Ghanaian ownership through listing on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

While bemoaning the relatively insignificant benefits African countries derive from their mineral resources, Hon. Jinapor advocated for an “affirmative action” that will enable host countries of these minerals to benefit more equitably from their natural resource endowment”. This policy, he says, must deliberate, conscious and have the interest of the host-countries at the top.

He re-echoed his long-held view that African countries who take the initiative to contribute to the fight against climate change must be rewarded and incentivised to pursue that path.

While acknowledging Energy Transition as a noble and magnanimous goal, the Minister underlined the imperativeness of producers of the raw materials for clean energy benefiting significantly from the Minerals.

Again, the Lands Minister joined his counterparts on the sidelines of the Summit to close the Toronto Stock Exchange amidst thunderous applause from global participants.

Ministers at the highly important summit were drawn from Canada, Germany, Peru, Finland among others.

Former Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection and human rights lawyer, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, has underscored the urgent need for collective action to address the complex challenges facing sexual and reproductive health in Africa.

Delivering the keynote address at the 11th African Conference on Sexual Health and Rights in Rabat, Morocco, on the theme; “Advancing the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of Women and Young People in Africa,” Nana Oye reflected on the progress made over the past three decades and acknowledged the advancements in maternal mortality rates and contraceptive prevalence rates across the continent.

However, she emphasised that Africa still lags behind the rest of the world in reproductive health indicators, urging for intensified efforts to bridge the gap.

Challenges and Recommendations

Nana Oye highlighted several challenges impeding progress in sexual and reproductive health, including the prevalence of unsafe abortions, inadequate legal frameworks, and socio-cultural barriers.

She stressed the importance of adopting regional and national regulations for Assisted Reproductive Technology and addressing deep-rooted socio-cultural norms.
Moreover, Nana Oye emphasised the critical role of research in informing policy and programming decisions. She called for the collection of gender-sensitive and youth-oriented data to guide strategic interventions effectively.

Call to Action

Nana Oye underscored the need for sustained action and increased political commitment to advance sexual and reproductive health in Africa and called upon all stakeholders to prioritise gender-sensitive resource allocation, leverage technology for improved healthcare access, and advocate for policy reforms at all levels.

“My scorecard for Africa on sexual and reproductive health is that; yes, we lag behind the rest of the world, yes, we have made some progress, yes, there is more work ahead, yes, we know what needs to be done, yes, not enough has been done, and yes, let’s do it together for women and youth of Africa,” Nana Oye remarked.

The conference concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing sexual and reproductive health rights across Africa, with delegates pledging to implement concrete actions to address the identified challenges.

The week-long conference served as a pivotal platform for dialogue, collaboration, and collective action towards achieving comprehensive sexual and reproductive health for all in Africa.

The conference, held from February 26 to March 2, 2024, was organised under the high patronage of His Royal Majesty King Mohammed VI of the Kingdom of Morocco, and saw the participation of 650 delegates from 40 countries.

The event was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including the First Ladies of the Central African Republic and Zambia, H.E. Brigitte Touadera and Ms. Mutinta Hichilema, who officially opened the conference. Notable remarks were delivered by the Director-General of the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the approved subjects for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

GES has announced the subjects are to be registered under mandatory, elective and optional categories.  

This was contained in a statement dated March 1, 2024, issued by the Acting Director of Schools and Instructions Division, Prince C. Agyemang-Duah.

According to the statement, the mandatory subjects are English Language, Mathematics, General Science, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Career Technology and Creative Arts and Design.

Ghanaian languages are classified under the elective subjects with French, Arabic and Computing under the optional subjects.

All Regional Directors have since been directed to closely supervise the registration process, ensuring that candidates strictly register for the approved subjects.

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has expressed shock with the Finance Ministry’s plea to President Nana Akufo-Addo not to assent the anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law.

In an interview on Adom FM Burning Issues, the General Secretary of GPCC, Reverend Immanuel Tettey stated the Ministry’s caution was out of place and must be resisted.

According to him, the proposed legislation is crucial to upholding Ghana’s cultural values and independence from external influence.

Reverend Tettey stressed that there are countries with worse forms of punishment for people who engage in LGBTQI+ activities, but are doing well and have kept their relationships with other multilateral agencies.

“Kenya, Senegal and other countries have more stringent measures yet the IMF is lending its support. So I can’t fathom why the Ministry of Finance will come out with this. Besides this Bill was in parliament way before the IMF negotiations started and it was not part of the conditions,” he stated.

The Bill which criminalizes and prohibits LGBTQI+ activities, was approved on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

It has sparked criticism from various quarters, including prominent figures like Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, the Board Chair of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), and other groups coupled with threats of legal action.

It is expected to land on the President’s desk within the week, but the Ministry on Monday cautioned Ghana could lose more than 3 billion dollars in external financing if passed into law.

Meanwhile, Akufo-Addo has said he is awaiting a ruling of the Supreme Court to decide on the Bill as it is currently being challenged.

One of the sponsors for the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah has said it is in the best interest of people who identify with the gay community.

According to the Ho West Member of Parliament (MP), the bill will not criminalise or violate the human rights of individuals but rather protect them.

He gave this assurance on Adom FM Burning Issues, explaining the has been explicitly stated in clause 17 of the Bill.

“The bill is not for everyone but the people who hold themselves as members of the gay community. The bill will rather protect and not violate their human rights as they claim because clause 17 says that we cannot touch anyone who is involved or perceived to be involved.

“We must report them to the police for the law to take its course. So if you touch them you will be caught up with the law and will face the consequences,” he added.

The Bill passed on February 28 by Parliament currently proscribes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activities and criminalises their promotion, advocacy and funding.

Persons caught in these acts would be subjected to six months to three-year jail term with promoters and sponsors of these acts bearing a three to five-year jail term.

The Bill would now require presidential assent to come into force but has been met with fierce criticisms amidst calls for Akufo-Addo for reject it.

The critics have argued the bill violates and infringes on fundamental human rights and have threatened to initiate legal action against it.

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has vowed it will not hesitate to advise congregations on how to cast their votes on December 7 polls if President Nana Akufo-Addo fails to assent the anti-LGBTQI+ bill into law.

Speaking on Adom FM Burning Issues, the General Secretary, Reverend Immanuel Tettey stated the bill will help to uphold the values that are important to the people of Ghana.

He, therefore, noted none of the religions and Ghanaians at large will sit aloof and accept anything that frowns on morals and values.

Reverend Tettey made these comments in reaction to the Finance Ministry’s caution for the President not to sign the bill which was passed on Wednesday February 28, 2024.

Even though Akufo-Addo has said he is yet to receive the controversial bill, the Ministry on March 4 said it could lead to severe repercussions on the country’s financial support from international organisations like the Bretton Woods Institutions.

But Reverend Tettey has emphasised the importance of upholding Ghana’s unique cultural, and family values and has urged the President to serve the interest of Ghanaians by assenting to the bill.

“The 275 MPs in parliament did not get there by themselves; they are representatives of the people and we are all saying we don’t like LGBTQI+ activities.

“But if they decide not to listen to us, we will advice ourselves in the upcoming election. We will ask our people to reject anyone who wants to ignore our moral, values and impose what we don’t like on us,” he cautioned.

Maize sellers in the Sissala area of the Upper West Region are crying for buyers of their produce weeks after harvest, with all known off-takers not in sight, forcing them to sell at lower-than-expected prices.

This came to light when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) interviewed some maize sellers who have been unable to sell their stock whilst those in dire need are being forced to sell at prices below the standardized ones.

Alhaji Maize Adinan Bajin, a maize dealer, said in December 2023, a bag of maize was sold at GH¢370.00, went down to GH¢365.00, later to GH¢320.00 and currently being sold at GH¢300.00.

In the past, after Christmas, a lot of buyers went to the Sissala area to buy maize but the prevailing situation had been different as there were no buyers, leaving the space for only one company to buy at a reduced price.

“We can’t get buyers and as farmers, we need to sell and clear our new fields, buy fertilizer and prepare our new fields, but we are at a standstill and stranded,” Alhaji Bajin said.

“More challenged are the smallholder farmers and women who are having difficulty selling their maize due to the fewer buyers.”

“Looking at the amount of inputs that were used in producing the maize, it’s now difficult to break even, and this could make us indebted to our suppliers.”

 He said he currently has 5,000 mini bags of maize that he had not been able to sell and called on the Government to intervene by regulating the price as they feared reducing their farm sizes next season if there was no support.

A woman maize farmer said: “I had to carry my two Maize bags to the WARC shop, a maize aggregation company, to sell but I was told I would receive my money the following day since the company`s mode of payment was mobile money and that had to be done next day”.

“A few years ago buyers would trace to my house and even buy the maize and pay me cash, this situation is affecting us.”

Mr Nabong Ayie, a farmer, said: “I have tried selling 2000 bags for the past two weeks and nobody is calling to buy, I need money badly to do other things and now I have to wait until a buyer calls”.

Mr John Dimah, a former National Best Maize Farmer, bemoaned the absence of buyers, saying:,”This year we are stranded, I still have some 15,000 mini bags of maize unsold hoping to get a buyer”.

He blamed the situation on the disturbances around the Sahelian region, the good season from the Middle belt of Ghana, the possible influx of foreign maize flooding the market.

He called on farmers to diversify farming to other crops like sorghum, sesame, and soya bean.

The WARC is the only company currently buying maize in the Sissala area where the price of maize has dropped from GH¢370.00 in December last year to Ghc300.00 per 100kg bag currently.

It has employed some 70 women aggregating maize at various communities at a price most farmers felt cheated by due to the lack of competitors.

However, the Company has plans to buy about 600,000 bags of maize.

Mr Samuel Akuetteh, a Municipal Officer in charge of Crops said the Department of Agriculture was aware of the situation and had created market linkages to enable smallholder farmers could sell their produce.

A former Energy Minister under the John Mahama administration, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, has singled out the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as being a major contributor to the country’s power sector challenges.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, March 4, the Ellembele MP categorically stated that ECG was the weakest link in the energy sector value chain. The chain mainly comprises production, transmission and distribution.

In recent times, Ghanaians have experienced unstable power supply in parts of the country, but the Electricity Company of Ghana – the national power distributor, has said the company is not undertaking any load shedding that requires a timetable.

But many power consumers, are of the view that the country was experiencing the severe power outages era christened “dumsor” some years ago.

ECG has explained that the intermittent power outages have largely been caused by major maintenance issues and in some cases an overload on their transformers, as well as some localized underground cable faults among others.

Responding to a question about the power situation in the country on PM Express, the former Energy Minister under John Mahama, Armah Kofi-Buah, said, “ECG is the weakest link in the value chain. It’s the biggest headache in the energy sector and it’s a fact.”

If you recall, what causes dumsor [power outages] is not always one thing. It could be a generational shortfall, the issue of fuel and financial challenges in getting some of these things done. As we speak, the reason we don’t have a generational shortfall and say that we don’t have dumsor [power outages] in terms of the generational shortfall, is that the MD of ECG rushes to buy heavy fuel oil for AKSA. The only reason why AKSA is operating is that ECG bought AKSA heavy fuel oil to operate. Sometimes amid a crisis we rush, and there are bigger issues that are confronting us” he argued.

The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Mr Samuel Dubik Mahama, who was also on the show, attributed the recent power cuts to maintenance issues.
According to him, the company only distributes what is made available to them.

“What we are experiencing now is caused by a lot of overload. A lot of transformers have a lot of customers on them more than what we have prescribed. Apart from underground cable faults within some localities, some of the power plants also undergo maintenance.”

He gave the assurance that the recent challenges that caused the outages have been resolved.

A 59-year-old car dealer accused of swindling a businessman of GH₵620,000 in a gold transaction has been remanded into Police custody by the Achimota Circuit Court.

Gbegoueu Evrard, a French national, is said to have collected the money under the pretext of selling to the complainant, Hayford Boadi, gold but failed.

Evrard is facing a charge of defrauding by false pretences.

His accomplices are Ernest Kweku Antwi, a 32-year-old aluminum fabricator, and Jordan Ansah, a 24-year-old private security man.

Evrard and his two accomplices have been jointly charged with conspiracy to commit crime to wit defrauding by false pretence.

Antwi and Ansah have pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Evrard ‘s plea could not be taken by the court because there was no French interpreter available. It therefore preserved his plea.

The court presided over by Mr Isaac Addo ordered the Registrar of the court to make arrangement for a French interpreter to assist the court at the next sitting on March 13, 2024

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Ahiale said the complainant was a resident of Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region.

Prosecution said during the year 2021, Evrard told a witness that he had a friend in Ghana who dealt in refined gold.

The prosecution said the witness contacted the complainant and informed him about the business which he (the complainant) expressed interest in.

ASP Ahiale said the complainant later contacted Evrard on mobile phone through the said witness to import the raw gold and Evrard told them that his friend who was a gold dealer needed some money to perform some rituals on the gold before it could be sold out.

Prosecution said to convince the complainant and the witness, Evrard took photographs of himself and the said gold and forwarded them.

Based on that representation, the complainant parted with GH₵620,000 in bits to Evrard, through the witness for the said rituals.

However, after Evrard collected the money, he failed to  honour his promise and “kept tossing the complainant and witness with different stories.”

In February 2024, the witness lured Evrard with another Gold business transaction for a white man client in Accra.

Prosecution said Evrard on hearing the quantum of money involved, he quickly conspired with Antwi and Ansah and one Abdallah, now at large, to defraud the witness.

The prosecutor said Evrard invited the witness to meet him in Accra in a few days to see the said gold.

Prosecution said the witness on his arrival in Accra from Ivory Coast reported the case to the Police for investigations.

On February 20, 2024, Evrard met the witness in Accra and took him to a gated house at Lapaz Fishpond to meet one Abdullai who was his partner for the said gold business.

While the said business meeting was going on in the house, the Police swiftly entered and arrested the three accused persons with five coated metallic objects, looking like refined gold bars in their possession.

Prosecution said Abdullai however managed to escape through a back door of the house.

The court was told that the exhibits were being forwarded for an Assay testing and report to enhance investigations.

The Coalition of Muslim Organisations, Ghana (COMOG), has said Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia should be worried about President Akufo-Addo’s posture on the  anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

According to the Chairman on Media and Research Committee, Mohammed Shamsudeen Shaibu, Akufo-Addo is ruining the political fortunes of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer with his actions.

Mr Shaibu made these comments on Adom FM Burning Issues following Akufo-Addo’s announcement to await a Supreme Court ruling on the bill which is being challenged before making a decision.

Speaking at the New Year greetings event with members of the Diplomatic Corps at Peduase, the President emphasised Ghana’s commitment to upholding its Human Rights record.

However, Mr Sahibu has questioned why the ruling of the apex court must determine whether or not Akufo-Addo will assent to the bill.

In his view, the majority of Ghanaians are in support of the bill, hence the President’s delay tactic is unnecessary.

“Across the house, we never saw any MP against the bill so why should the president delay and consider someone is going to court on what basis?

“Is it to derail or unnecessarily delay the process so that he will not sign before he leaves office? Vice President Bawumia should be worried because his political fortunes is being ruined by the actions of Akufo-Addo,” he stated.

On February 28, 2024, Parliament unanimously approved the bill that criminalises LGBTQ+ activities, as well as their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Those found guilty could face a jail term ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while those promoting and sponsoring the act could face a jail term between 3 to 5 years.

Despite intense call for Akufo-Addo immediately sign the bill, he says it is yet to reach his desk.

The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has expressed his deep concerns about the impact of his role on the safety and well-being of his family.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr Mahama, who has been at the helm of ECG, shed light on the difficulties he faces in managing the responsibilities of his position.

The Managing Director disclosed that his life has been threatened, and the safety of his children and family has been jeopardized since assuming the role.

“Doing this job is not the easiest thing, your life is being threatened, and to put the lives of your children and family in limbo it’s not fair. And these are things that have been happening to me,” Mahama revealed during the interview.

The Managing Director further emphasized that the challenges he faces are often exacerbated when false accusations are made against him or the power distribution company.

He urged the public to verify facts before making accusations, stating, “… it is always when people are complaining that somebody has taken an amount of money or something has been moved, it is not fair. Get the facts right.”

Expressing his frustration, Mr Mahama highlighted the growing trend of spreading misinformation in the country, emphasising the need for responsible reporting.

“We’re getting to a point in this country, where waking up in the morning and brandishing things that are not true is the order of the day, and that is not fair,”he stated.

His frustration comes amidst incessant power outages that are being experienced in the country. Ghanaians have asked ECG to come out with a power outage timetable for all and sundry to know that ‘dumsor’ [power cuts] has returned.

Meanwhile, Mr Mahama has given the assurance that issues that resulted in the recent power outages have been resolved, hence, the intermittent power cuts will be a thing of the past.

The Dormaa Area Head of Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), John Anim Peprah, has advised the public to deal directly with its officials for meter acquisition and other services without involving middlemen.

Mr Peprah gave the advice in an interview with the media at Dormaa-Ahenkro in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region as part of NEDCo’s day three mass revenue mobilisation exercise.

He said it was rather significant for applicants to use approved channels for meter acquisition to ensure transparency and efficiency in the process.

Mr Peprah expressed satisfaction with the progress of the exercise, saying during the first and second days, NEDCo mobilised GHC91,000.00 and GHC92,000.00 respectively.

Giving an account of the exercise on the third day, he said some locally operated institutions and companies showed commitment in settling their indebtedness.

The Presbyterian Nursing Training School settled its debt of GHC12,000.00 while the Dormaa Presbyterian Hospital paid GHC20,000.00 out of its GHC2.8 million debt, Mr Peprah said.

The rest were St Charles Farms, which paid GHC30,000.00 out of the GHC88,000.00 debt, Kusi Farms, GHC20,000.00 out of GHC40,000.00, and Gyamfi Poultry Farms cleared its entire debt of GHC85,000.00.

The Adama Musah Dry Mill also paid its total debt of GHC19,000.00, whereas power supply to a residential home at Kumikrom, near Dormaa-Ahenkro, amounting to GHC2000.00 was also paid.

The Secretary General of the Catholic Bishops Conference, Reverend Father Clement Kwasi Adjei, is advising President Akufo-Addo to ignore any attempts by external bodies to dictate whether or not to assent to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

According to him, although the country depends on external support from bodies such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, he [the President] should not be influenced into making a decision that Ghanaians do not support.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on March 4, he said “This financial assistance, it is a grant or a loan. In fact when I follow the discussions going on what I get is that because Ghanaians are poor and we are going out for financial assistance, you want to just strangle us .

“Something we don’t want as Ghanaians, you want to use your money just to prevent us from doing it. LGBTQ we don’t want it. Ghanaians don’t want it. Majority say they don’t want it; about 98.5% we don’t want it.

“Is this what the UN is actually standing for? I don’t think so. Yes, we are ready to engage government to explain certain things to us.

“We also put forward our ideas and our understanding, but I still hold that poverty should not be used to let somebody succumb to the will of the other. That is what I have to say,” he said.https://www.youtube.com/embed/6RiaKQhoDNI

Rev. Adjei added that he doubts the IMF and the World Bank would cease to support the nation just because it had passed legislation against the practice of same-sex marriage.

“I don’t think because we have agreed to ban LGBTQ+ practices and so on, the UN, IMF and World Bank will not help us. I don’t think so. Maybe they are using it to terrify us. To put fear in us, I don’t think so,” he added.

Rev Adjei added that the Catholic Bishops Conference still stood by the decision for the President to assent to the bill.

On Monday, March 4, the Finance Ministry issued a statement cautioning the President to refrain from signing the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill into law.

According to the ministry, such an action could lead to severe repercussions on the country’s financial support from international organisations like the Bretton Woods institutions.

The statement highlighted concerns that the expected US$300 million financing from the First Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (Budget Support), currently awaiting Parliamentary approval, might not be disbursed if the bill is signed into law.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Volta Region Chapter, welcomed its new executives in a vibrant ceremony that marked the beginning of their tenure.

Among the distinguished individuals taking up pivotal roles in the healthcare advocacy group, the Regional Chairman, Dr Med Kweku Appiagyei retained his position, showcasing a continuity of leadership in the region’s medical community.

The induction and inauguration ceremony, held at the serene premises of the Hotel Stevens which also marked their awards dinner, brought together healthcare professionals, stakeholders, and esteemed guests from across the region.

The event was a testament to the commitment of the medical fraternity in the Volta Region to collaborate and advance the interests of healthcare practitioners and the welfare of the general populace.

In his address to attendees, Dr Appiagyei expressed gratitude for the trust and confidence reposed in him to continue serving as the Chairman of the Volta Region Chapter.

The second phase of the South African  National Democratic Congress (NDC) Women’s Wing Sanitary Pads project visited Effiduasi Asokore Constituency with a call on the government to waive all taxes on sanitary pads.

This, according to the NDC SA Women’s Wing, would reduce the cost of sanitary towels which invariably would improve women’s menstrual hygiene.

In a shared value of assisting the less privileged and also energising the base of the NDC, the donation ceremony was held at the Tijaniya Senior High School in Effiduasi Asokore on Sunday, March 3, 2024. The programme was themed “Empowering Girls Through Menstrual Hygiene – Victory for John Mahama”.

Delivering a speech at the function, Madam Wilbertina Buxton, SA NDC Women’s Wing Organizer underscored the urgent need and the reason why government must adhere to their advocacy of waivering all taxes on sanitary pads.

This, according to her, would not only lower the prices of the pads on the market but, encourage more girls to use hygienic sanitary pads to improve their well-being and enhance their confidence as well.

Madam Buxton noted that this particular activity started last year and normally was done in August to coincide with SA Women’s Month. “But, because this year is an election year, we’ve decided to run the project across the entire country. We’ve been to Oti Region and this is the second region we’re visiting”, she stated.

Dovetailing into politics and justaxposing the cost of sanitary pads to the economy, she emphasised that the era were rags and other unhygienic materials were used by girls during their menses were over. But, the current bad governance by the NPP has made it difficult for girls to procure pads hence, their decision to step in with the project to help.

She paid glowing tribute to Mr. Benjamin Kofi Quashie, NDC SA Council of Elders Chair, for being the main sponsor of the sanitary pad project.

In the company of Madam Buxton were Mr. Benjamin Quashie, Gloria Huze, Ashanti Region Women Organiser and her deputy, Ibrahim Adams, Effiduasi Asokore Constituency Chairman of the NDC, Efiduase Asokore Constituency Women Organiser and the Constituency Executives.

The others were Stephen Atuahene, Ayensuano Constituency Vice Chairman and some of Ablekuma West Constituency Women’s Wing Executives.

The Technology Consultancy Centre of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology will soon create an avenue aimed at churning out innovative digital solutions.

The Director-General, Prof. Francis Davis says the digital technology and innovation hub will create the enabling environment to nurture creativity among the youth.

“Recognizing the importance of nurturing the next generation of engineers, TCC is embarking on a transformative initiative. We believe that making engineering attractive to the younger generation is key to building a sustainable future.

“In this light, TCC is creating a ‘maker space’, an innovation center focused on digital solutions. This center will serve as a dynamic hub where students can explore, experiment, and innovate in a collaborative and creative environment,” he explained.

Prof. Davis made this statement at an event to mark the World Engineering Day at the KNUST College of Engineering.

The World Engineering Day 2024 is under the theme: “Engineering solutions for a sustainable world”.

The event was in collaboration with the KNUST College of Engineering and the Ghana Institution of Engineering.

The event saw the participation of selected schools from the Ashanti region.

Ing. Yaa Obenewaa Okudzeto who represented the president of the Ghana Institution of Engineers stressed the Institutions focus on sustainable development.

“This demonstrates our commitment as an engineering institution to the concept of sustainability and to contribute to the provision of resilient infrastructure.

“This, we believe, it’s an indispensable foundation for achieving sustainable development,” she said.

Chief programme officer at the Ghana Commission for UNESCO, Apollonius Asare assured of UNESCO’s resolve to create “supportive environment for young engineers through the various UNESCO fellowships in engineering”.  

He added: “We will continue to pursue UNESCO’s mission in Ghana by actively collaborating with stakeholders to promote STEM education, provide mentorship opportunities and celebrate the achievement of engineers, both established and emerging.”

The provost of the KNUST College of Engineering, Prof. Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, was optimistic of a better world with engineers.

 “The world needs engineers who are not just problem solvers but problem preventers. We need engineers who are passionate, ethical and purpose driven to make a positive impact,” said Prof. Kwaku Amaning Adjei who spoke on his behalf.

A National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, says parental leave, ranging from seven days to four weeks for fathers to support their spouses after childbirth, will address the gender gap.

He, therefore, advocated an extensive leave for working parents to replace the existing three-month maternity leave, which he described as insufficient, particularly for women.

Mr Sosu, also a Human Rights Lawyer, made the statement at a stakeholders’ briefing workshop on Maternity Leave Extension; Paternity Leave Introduction and removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) on imported pads Bill held in Parliament in on Monday.

The workshop is part of the MP’s efforts to address a Private Member’s Bill proposing an amendment to extend maternity leave from three months to four months introduced in Parliament.

The Bill, which seeks to amend the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), is also proposing an option for an additional two weeks of maternity leave in the case of a caesarean section (CS), stillbirth(s) or multiple births.

The Bill’s primary objective is to promote gender equality and ensure protection for both men and women in a suitable context.

The Labour (Amendment) Bill, 2023, also known as Parental Leave for All, is pushing for the introduction of paid paternity leave for men for a minimum of seven days.

It is aimed at allowing new mothers adequate time to give birth, exclusively breastfeed, care for and bond with their new baby, as well as recover before returning to work.

The essence of paternity leave is to enable men to take care of their wives and assist the new mothers with domestic chores.

Mr Sosu emphasised that the proposed parental leave for fathers was pivotal in fostering shared responsibility in childcare.

“The significance of the initial seven days will allow fathers to actively participate in late-night feedings and baby care, thereby contributing to the establishment of a strong bond with their newborns.”

“I have had some women say why do you want men to also have parental leave? Well, and I said, it’s the same thing. The advocacy in terms of bridging the gender gap has to do with protection for both men and women,” the MP said.

Mr Sosu noted that the initial seven days were a critical period for “responsible” fathers to be present during late-night baby care, fostering a deeper connection with their newborns and providing support to their wives who had given birth.

Madam Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, a National Democratic Congress MP of Ada, said the affordability and availability of sanitary pads were a fundamental necessity to health, dignity, and access to education.

“The call for the elimination of import duties and Value Added Tax is rooted in the belief that financial barriers should not deny anyone their basic human right to menstrual hygiene,” she said.

A New Patriotic Party MP for Abuakwa North, Gifty Twum Ampofo, called for the non-politicisation of the issues and that concerted efforts were needed to address them holistically to support both genders.

Other speakers called for the availability of sanitary pads to students in various schools as part of their prospectus.

The Site Manager of the Forestry Commission of Ada East, Ernest Apenkwah, has declared zero tolerance for fishers who catch and sell turtles, saying the Commission will apply the laws on such persons to the latter. 

Mr Apenkwah therefore warned families and opinion leaders in the communities in Ada East to desist from pleading for recalcitrant fishers catching turtles against the provisions of the laws of the country.

He said turtles play a major role in the marine ecosystem by promoting nutrients, controlling the population of other animals, recycling, and building habitats for other animals, among others.

He said this during a day’s sensitization programme held by Sharks and Rays on the conservation of hammerhead sharks to protect the ecosystem.

Some of the fishermen during the programme said turtles were being caught by some community members.

Mr Apenkwah said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that “within this area, there’s some community that eats the turtles, but sometimes they send it to the riverbank and sell it.”

He said that almost any time his outfit and Police apprehends people for catching turtles, family heads, opinion leaders, and community members follow up even to the Police station to beg on their behalf.

“We’re not going to listen to any of the opinion leaders; if the law catches you, we’ll make sure you face the law because that would help us conserve our ecosystem,” he said.

Mr Apenkwah said until people were arrested and prosecuted, society would not yearn to do the right thing for the benefit of all.

He said the Commission had done a lot of sensitisation to alert them on the need to preserve the species; however, all efforts to get some people aligned with that vision had proved futile.

According to him, the Commission, in collaboration with some fishermen, had formed a task force made up of volunteers as a measure to deal with the situation.

He said these volunteers assist the Commission by reporting to officials whenever they see perpetrators and help to facilitate their arrest and prosecution.

He urged community members to be vigilant and report to help the wildlife division of the Forestry Commission arrest and prosecute people who flout the laws.

A ravaging fire has destroyed a house said to be a property of Highlife legend, Kojo Antwi at Hong Kong, near Kwashieman in the Ablekuma North Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

The fire incident whose cause is yet-to-be established occurred on Sunday evening.

It reportedly started in one of the corridors close to a kitchen in the building.

A studio and other properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis were lost to the inferno.

A swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) prevented the fire from spreading to nearby houses.

Ho West Member of Parliament(MP), Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah has confirmed that the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the anti-LGBTQI+ bill, is yet to be submitted to President Nana Akufo-Addo for his assent.

Mr Bedzrah made these comments on Adom FM Burning Issues amidst public discussions and agitations for the President to assent to the Bill which was passed on February 28.

“Parliament has completed all the work we are supposed to do and it is left with the presidential assent. The Clerk is yet to take to the government Printer, Ghana Publishing Corporation for it to be placed on tinsel for his assent but it is not true the bill will return to parliament,” The MP who was one of the sponsors of the Bill clarified.

Parliament unanimously approved the bill that criminalizes LGBTQ+ activities, as well as their promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Those found guilty could face a jail term ranging from 6 months to 3 years, while those promoting and sponsoring the act could face a jail term between 3 to 5 years.

Amidst intense pressure for Akufo-Addo to assent to the Bill, the Ministry of Finance, has however said otherwise.

In a press release on Monday, the Ministry cautioned that approving the bill could result in significant financial consequences for Ghana.

According to the Finance Ministry’s statement, Ghana stands to lose a substantial amount of World Bank financing, estimating a potential loss of USD$3.8 billion over the next five to six years.

On the part of Akufo-Addo, he says he is awaiting the Supreme Court’s ruling before deciding on the controversial Bill following a court action.

The Dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School, Professor John Gatsi, has described the Finance Ministry’s suggestion to the President not to sign the recently passed anti-LGBTQ+ bill into law as a lobbying attempt.

According to him, there is no portion of the deal with the International Monetary Fund that says that if Ghana enacted such legislation, it would be a breach of contract.

Speaking on JoyNews’ the Pulse on March 4, he elaborated that upon close examination of the country, no advocacy group was potent enough to obstruct the President from assenting the bill.

Therefore, this was somewhat a form of blackmail from the Finance Ministry, anticipating potential hindrances to securing funds.

Again, he added that this was also a way to sort of justify the President’s intention to not sign the bill.

“This thing is just trying to keep the momentum about lobbying. We do not have those things as conditions in engaging with the World Bank or IMF. There are other minority issues, there are other vulnerable issues in our countries. It is based on those things that we are getting development funding from the World Bank to fund benefit all these classes of people.

“So the World Bank cannot say that because of the Anti-LGBTQ+ issues they will not extend money to us, which of course is a loan that will be paid over – I do not see that.

“What I see is a strong force of lobbying that the law should not be passed. That is where we are now. I am not sure that there is any pressure on us about that. It is all about lobbying. So lobbying is scaling up seriously at the last hour because the bill is on its way to the presidency.

“The President made statements to the extent that he has not seen a force in the country built up in relation to LGBTQ. So if we can have something measured in this form that the Finance Ministry has done then that will be understandable for the President to say, I will not sign the law.

“And for me, that is how I see it. We don’t have a legal relation that says that if you pass anti –LGBTQ then we will not give you money,” he said.

In a press release issued on Monday, March 4, the Finance Ministry cautioned that such action could lead to severe repercussions on the country’s financial support from international organisations like the Bretton Woods Institutions.

The statement highlighted concerns that the expected US$300 million financing from the First Ghana Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (Budget Support), currently awaiting Parliamentary approval, might not be disbursed if the bill is signed into law.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has vowed to take firm action against those involved in the recent clash between Manso Tontokrom residents in the Ashanti region and private security personnel from Asanko Gold Mines Limited.

In a press release issued on Monday, March 4, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to ensuring that individuals found culpable will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

An extensive investigation into the incident has been launched by the Ministry in collaboration with relevant security agencies.

While condemning the unfortunate occurrence, the Ministry has appealed for calm from the public as investigations continue to unfold.

“The Ministry is currently investigating the matter in collaboration with the appropriate security authorities.”

“The public is hereby assured that, the perpetrators of such act will be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the Republic if found culpable,” an excerpt of the statement said.

Three fatalities have been reported following a clash between Manso Tontokrom residents in the Ashanti region and private security personnel from Asanko Gold Mines Limited.

The confrontation unfolded on Saturday, March 2, reportedly triggered by gunfire from the security personnel, resulting in the death of one resident. Sources suggest that the deceased was among a group of residents trespassing on the mining site belonging to the company.

In retaliation, residents allegedly attacked the Asanko Mines security team, resulting in the lynching of two security officers. Additionally, another security officer sustained severe injuries during the altercation.

Authorities have moved to restore calm in the affected community following the incident.

In a bid to foster Quranic knowledge and moral values among students, the Foundation of Tema West Islamic Schools has held the second edition of its Qur’an competition.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced plans to put on hold his decision to assent the anti-LGBTQI+ bill into law.

This according to him is on the back of a challenge mounted at the Supreme Court following the passage of the Bill on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Addressing Members of the Diplomatic Corps at Peduase on Monday, Akufo-Addo noted he is yet to receive the Bill.

However, the decision of the court will determine the next line of action.

“The operations of the institutions of the Ghanaian state will determine the future trajectory of the rule of law and human rights compliance in our country,” the President noted.

The Bill criminalizes LGBTQ+ activities, their promotion, advocacy, and funding within the country.

The Bill would now require presidential assent to come into force but has been met with fierce criticisms amidst calls for Akufo-Addo for reject it.

The critics have argued the bill violates and infringes on fundamental human rights and have threatened to initiate legal action against it.

The Ministry of Finance has also pleaded with the President not to assent to the Bill, stating it could result in significant financial consequences for Ghana.

According to the Ministry’s statement, Ghana stands to lose a substantial amount of World Bank financing, estimating a potential loss of USD$3.8 billion over the next five to six years.

The Bank of Ghana(BoG) has suspended the Foreign Exchange Trading Licenses of Guaranty Trust Bank Ghana Limited (GTB) and FBN Bank Ghana Limited (FBN), effective 18th March 2024.

The suspension which is to last for one month is in accordance with section 11 (2) of the Foreign Exchange Act 2006, (Act 723).

In a statement, the Central Bank explained the decision was due to various breaches of the foreign exchange market regulations, including fraudulent documentation in their foreign exchange operations.

BoG has noted the license will be restored at the end of the one month once it is satisfied that the banks have put in place effective controls to ensure strict adherence to the foreign exchange market regulations.

Meanwhile, BoG has also cautioned foreign exchange market players to adhere strictly to the applicable forex market regulations and guidelines.

Management of Asanko Gold Ghana Limited, operators of the Asanko Gold Mine in the Ashanti Region has condemned the murder of its security personnel and a civilian by illegal miners at Tontokrom during a clash with some aggrieved residents, on Saturday afternoon.

The company, in a release says, while the officials of the private security company were patrolling the Tontokrom concession, they were attacked by the illegal miners who were hiding in the bushes.

“Upon seeing the illegal miners emerging from the bushes with various guns, clubs, machetes, and other weapons, the security officers chose to retreat since they were unarmed. Unfortunately, two (2) of the private security officers were captured and lynched to death by these illegal miner”.

According to Asanko Mine, “It is important to note that for years now, it has always been the case that illegal miners, who are not residents at Tontokrom, have been encroaching on Asanko’s legally held concessions. It has also been the case that these illegal miners have been harassing both the staff of Asanko and its contractors”.

The company further stressed that the activities of illegal miners are erasing the efforts that the government and its officers are putting in place to make Ghana the premier mining investment destination in the world.

They are, therefore, calling for an investigation into the matter.

Asanko Mines also concluded by assuring employees, contractors, and community members of total security protection going forward.

Former Finance Minister, Seth Terkper has advised that to alleviate pressure on government budget, all Free SHSs should adopt day schooling exclusively.

According to him, the entrenched legacy of Free SHS in the system should transform a day school system rather than a boarding school system.

Speaking during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on March 4, he emphasised that no advanced country implements free secondary education with a boarding system.

“Tell me which advanced country has a free secondary education which comes with boarding with all fees and everything paid…the public schools are all day. Have not seen the old style boardination when government takes all the responsibility it is in enormous” he added

Mr. Terkper emphasised the advantages of Free SHS but recommended adopting a day system for students to ease the pressure on the government, considering the extensive responsibilities in education.

He said free SHS is a legacy, therefore it is important maintaining it, suggesting the government could have made boarding students pay to share responsibilities and ease the burden on the government.

The former Finance Minister emphasizes that with education being extensive, expecting the government to bear the entire responsibility of free SHS might not be beneficial for Ghana’s economy, especially considering its low-income status.

“Even the advanced countries do it through a day school system,” he said.

“Mr Speaker, Free SHS might be labelled by its detractors as a mere political slogan that must be demonised, but it is, in fact, a transformative programme that has broken myths and liberated minds.

“I am proud that the NPP government, under my leadership, has been able to bring this transformative policy into our education system.

“Mr Speaker, I believe the success of the Free SHS has answered its critics and the arguments about it should cease, and we should simply concentrate on finding ways to improve it.”

However, fresh details uncovered by Joy News suggest serious defects that could undermine the effective implementation of the Free SHS policy.

Millicent Nukornoo, a 14-year-old girl who was admitted to the 37 Military Hospital due to a heart valve condition, tragically passed away around 4:30 pm on Sunday, March 3, 2024.

Her parents, residents of Anloga in the Volta Region, were urgently seeking financial aid for their daughter’s surgery.

Medical professionals at the hospital diagnosed Millicent with damaged heart valves, one of which was irreparably damaged. This led to swollen legs and significant discomfort.

To address her critical condition, her parents needed $16,000 for heart surgery expected to be performed at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Rev. Daniel Quashigah of Anloga, a pastor close to the family, stated that the parents are distressed following their daughter’s passing.

He also thanked generous donors who heeded the urgent call for help.

Rev. Quashigah shared, “I sadly seize this moment to sincerely thank you and your great platform. We tearfully lost Millicent Nukornoo yesterday [Sunday] between 4:30 pm. Millicent was admitted at the 37 military Hospital on Sunday 4 February last month. The parents are in distress now.”

The Sissala East Municipal Director of Health Services in the Upper West region, Clifford Veng, has expressed worry over the lack of a mortuary for the Sissala East Municipal Hospital.

He stated that the lack of a mortuary at the facility forces authorities to keep corpses in undesignated places at the facility sometimes in same wards with patients and staff.

Clifford Veng disclosed this during the 2023 health performance conference of the Sissala East municipality at Tumu.

“When death occurs at the municipal hospital, the dead are supposed to be separated from the living immediately but in the case of our municipality, the situation is different.

“Corpses stay over 24 hours in undesignated areas pending the time relative will come for them,” he revealed.

He added, “When there is a death, some families need to preserve the deceased for some time to allow them to prepare adequately for the funeral rites hence the need for mortuary services with its benefits in the municipality.”

The 2023 Sissala East Municipal Health Sector performance review was held on the theme; ‘Of fostering collaboration: engaging stakeholders in reducing maternal and perinatal mortalities through a resilient healthcare system.’

Clifford Veng commended health workers and their stakeholders for the progress made over the years in delivering quality service to the people enumerating some successes chalked.

The Sissala East Municipal Director of Health Services opened up on the activities that they undertook during the year in review under review.

He said they conducted breast screening for adolescent girls in schools for early detection and management of cancer.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has reiterated government’s dedication to the prompt completion of all road projects initiated under the Akufo-Addo administration despite funding challenges.

During a site visit to the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Project, inaugurated by President Akufo-Addo in 2020, the Minister reassured the public of its completion.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, the Minister said despite economic hurdles and delays in obtaining foreign funding, government is unwavering in its determination to complete these crucial infrastructure projects.

“Because of the debt exchange programme many of these projects that are under foreign funds have delayed. Government has taken a decision to negotiate with the contractors so that projects that are nearing completion from 80, 90% towards 100% can come to site and work.

“This project is about 88% complete. The plan is for it to be finished by September. I am personally satisfied with the timelines, and I have urged them to stay committed to completing it by September. This is a very important project,” he stated.

In a shocking turn of events, a senior magistrate, Terence Mashaire, has found himself in legal turmoil as he is accused of accepting a bribe to manipulate a trial verdict.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe shared on their X account how the accused and the bribery planned to turn a verdict into a innocent one beyond the court.

Details of the Alleged Bribery

According to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), Mashaire allegedly received groceries, stationery, and a Defy Microwave from the defendant, Allen Bhaswi, in September 2023.

The gifts were purportedly given as a token of appreciation for the favourable ruling in Bhaswi’s case.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) revealed that the accused and Bhaswi went beyond a professional relationship, engaging in communication before and after court sessions.

The case, which concluded in December 2023, resulted in a ruling in favour of Allen Bhaswi.

It is alleged that Mashaire accepted a Solo Defy Microwave, groceries, and stationery as gifts from Bhaswi. Law enforcement officers later discovered the stove at Mashaire’s residence, providing further evidence of the alleged bribery.

Even after the conclusion of the case, Mashaire’s involvement did not cease. The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) appealed the judgment in the Allen Bhaswi case.

Mashaire reportedly continued to advise Bhaswi on the legal proceedings at the High Court. An additional allegation states that Mashaire received USD450 through Ecocash from Bhaswi.

Terence Mashaire has been remanded in custody and is set to appear in court on 4 March 2024 for a bail ruling.

The scandal has raised concerns about the integrity of the judiciary. The potential influence of external factors on legal decisions is being questioned.

The International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) (www.ITFC-IDB.org), a member of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group, has signed several agreements with Uzbekistan, amounting to US$ 715 million, on the sidelines of the Arab Coordination Group meeting, which was held from 4th to 5th March 2024 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

ITFC has been actively supporting the Government and local banks in Uzbekistan since 2018, with total financing approved for the country standing at US$773 million. This financing is geared towards supporting the production of cotton and wheat, ensuring food security, and helping stabilize prices for essential commodities, as well as supporting the trade finance needs of private sector and SME clients. In addition, ITFC will continue supporting local banks with technical assistance through new Integrated Trade Solutions in the coming years.

The collaboration also encompasses the “Trade Connect Central Asia+ (TCCA+)” Program, a flagship initiative developed by ITFC. The TCCA+ targets the expansion and economic integration of trade and investment cooperation among six countries: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

The first agreement is a Framework Agreement on cooperation for the period of 2024 – 2026, amounting to US$600 million. This agreement was signed by H.E. Mr. Laziz Kudratov, Minister of Investment, Industry and Trade and IsDB Governor of Uzbekistan, and Eng. Hani Salem Sonbol, CEO of ITFC. The agreement aims to strengthen areas of cooperation between ITFC and Uzbekistan, focusing on trade finance, agricultural and food security financing for the public sector, support for state-owned enterprises, and financing for small and medium enterprises in sectors like pharmaceuticals, food and agriculture, textile, and manufacturing.

The second agreement is a US$100 million Murabaha Financing Agreement signed by Mr. Ilkhom Norkulov, First Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, and Eng. Hani Salem Sonbol, CEO of ITFC. This financing agreement aims to contribute to food security and agriculture in Uzbekistan, through procurement of strategic agricultural goods, to ensure a stable supply of wheat throughout the year. This initiative helps to stabilize wheat prices and support local farmers.

Additionally, ITFC signed a Line of Trade Financing Agreement jointly with AgroBank and its subsidiary SmartBank, amounting to US$15 million. This agreement will support SMEs and the private sector in Uzbekistan, boosting private sector contributions to the country’s economic development. The line of financing will  provide Sharia-compliant trade finance solutions to private sector and SME clients of AgroBank and its subsidiary SmartBank. This financing will be focusing on sectors like food and agriculture, manufacturing, and textile, and will aim to promote  financing of green projects.

Commenting on the signings, Eng. Hani Salem Sonbol, CEO of ITFC said: “The agreements signed today strengthen our collaboration with Uzbekistan and are a testimony of our commitment to the socio-economic development in Uzbekistan and the Central Asia region at large. We believe the projects and programs that will benefit from the approved financing will positively contribute to national economic growth. We are pleased to be covering key sectors such as food security and the private sector which align with our focus on contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals especially SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 8 (Decent Work&Economic Growth).

With a focus on key sectors such as trade finance, agriculture, and SME development, these agreements are meant to stimulate growth, ensure food security, support SMEs, and create sustainable economic opportunities. The Principal of Margret Marquart Catholic Nursing Training College in Kpando in the Volta Region has urged graduates of the school to remain in Ghana and contribute to its development.

Francisca Nana Arthur said this while speaking in an interview with Adom News at the school’s 1st graduation and 4th matriculation ceremonies in Kpando

The college, which started on March, 15, 2021 with 49 students comprising 15 males and 34 females, now has a student population of 330 students, comprising 252 females and 78 males.

46 students of the first batch have graduated.

As the college enrolled its 2nd and 3rd batch of students and graduated the first batch of the school, she urged the graduates to stay in the country to work for mother Ghana as health practitioners.

She stressed that, everyone has a duty to contribute to the nation’s progress.

“It will be unlawful for the government to spend on you as health practitioners and after graduation, you leave your country to another country therefore, love your country and don’t be in a hurry to abandon it to go and develop another country” Ms. Arthur said.

The principal underscored the importance of integrity in the healthcare profession, emphasizing the value of truthfulness and integrity.

She urged the students to be fair, avoid discrimination and treat everyone with respect and dignity.

The overall best student, Fiakorme Bright Kweku in his address encouraged the students to be courageous and learn hard to achieve their aims and dreams in life.

The Bekwai circuit court, presided over by His Honour Isaac Apeatu, has sentenced two armed robbers to 30 years each in prison with hard labor.

The two individuals attacked a vehicle belonging to Accurate Giant Company on November 26, 2022 in Tewobabi, Adansi Asokwa district of Ashanti.

They made away with an amount of GH¢40,500.

The two robbers have been identified as Martin Asante, aged 26, and Rocky Nyamedi, aged 29.

According to the prosecution, Rocky Nyamedi, a staff member of the company, was the mastermind behind the robbery.

The prosecution stated that, the police officer who traced and arrested the two suspects is G/Sgt. Eric Frimpong.

Nyamedi was arrested at Esereso in the Bosomtwe District of Ashanti, while Martin Asante was apprehended in Bibiani, Western North region.

A 19-year-old foreman, Matinu Alhassan, appeared before an Adentan Circuit Court on September 3, 2023, for allegedly stealing GH¢57,000 from a hardware shop.

The accused person who was before the court presided over by Angela Attachie pleaded not guilty to charges of breaking into the shop, destroying a padlock and stealing.

Following his not guilty plea, the judge granted him bail in the sum of GH¢57,000, with two sureties who must prove ownership of a landed property. The case was adjourned to October 2, 2023, for further court proceedings.

Details

The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo who presented the case before the court said the complainant, Emmanuel Twumasi, was a businessman.

He said Twumasi, the accused, Alhassan and his suspected accomplice, Malik Adam (currently on the run), all reside at Oyibi, Appolonia, a suburb of Accra.

He added that Twumasi, who deals in hardware equipment, owned several shops within Accra, one of which was located at Appolonia and managed by one Mohammed.

Mohammed, the suspect Adam and other employees who frequently slept in the shop.

The prosecutor said on the evening of August 8, 2023, after the shop had closed for the day, Twumasi was unable to collect the proceeds, thus entrusted the shop manager, Mohammed, to secure the money.

According to Chief Inspector Lanyo, the accused, Alhassan, learned about the existence of the money through his friend and suspected accomplice, Adam.

Therefore, around 11 p.m. the same day, Alhassan paid an unannounced visit to the shop while Adam and shop manager Mohammed were asleep.

Alhassan then proceeded to break the padlock where the money was kept and stole GH¢57,000.

While attempting to escape with the money, Alhassan was spotted and questioned by Adam.

Alhassan promised to share the money with Adam if he allowed him to escape, to which Adam agreed.

“The next day, when the shopkeeper discovered the break-in and theft, he reported it to the complainant, leading to a report being lodged at the Oyibi Police Station.

 Investigations subsequently led to the arrest of the accused, who initially admitted to the offence in his caution statement.

However, he later claimed to know nothing about the missing money,” he said.

The prosecutor said efforts were underway to apprehend the suspected accomplice, Adam.

The headmaster of Sokode Secondary Technical School (SOCTECH), Isaac Kofi Dzidzienyo has appealed to government to assist the school with infrastructure to help improve teaching and learning in the school.

According to him, the lack of classroom blocks, laboratories and ICT gadgets is negatively affecting the academic activities in the school.

He said due to the lack of classroom blocks, they have converted the school’s dining hall into a classroom that houses over 600 students.

Mr. Dzidzienyo made this call during a visit to the school by Adom News correspondent, Odehyeba Owusu Job.

The headmaster, therefore, seized the opportunity to appeal to the government, NGOs, individuals, stakeholders, and other benevolent organizations to come to the aid of the school by supporting them with computers and other laboratory equipment to help teaching and learning.

Some Liberians displaced by recent demolition in Buduburam have turned the Point Hope D/A Basic School into a trading hub.

Aside trading, the displaced residents pound fufu and engage in other activities on the school compound.

Over 5000 individuals were affected by the Buduburam demolition exercise to rid the area off miscreants.

Following the demolition exercise, some Liberian nationals have taken over the school leaving pupils stranded.

On Thursday, the Central Regional Security Council ordered the residents to vacate the classrooms.

But they have refused to move from the school premises noting that, they have nowhere to go.

When Adom News visited the school premises, the squatters were busy pounding fufu, while others engaged in trading activities in the school.

Some parents have raised concerns about the quality of the meals being served to their children in Senior High Schools (SHS), claiming that the food is unbalanced and inadequate.

The parents’ concerns come in the wake of a recent JoyNews exposé which revealed the poor quality and quantity of the food being served to students in some senior high schools.

The documentary showed many students were receiving meals that were neither nourishing nor sufficient to meet their daily nutritional needs.

Speaking on Joy FM on March 4, some parents have expressed their wish to pay for feeding because of the poor food being served.

“When you listen to them, they tell you that some of their mates do not go to the dining hall at all because of the kind of food they serve there.

“The situation is very bad. It is not the best and I wouldn’t expect anybody to defend this,” one of them said on Joy FM‘s Super Morning Show.

Another parent quizzed “What is the essence of free education?”

“My child is in Krobo girls and the situation is very bad. As of now, she can’t visit the toilet because there is no balanced diet.”

For months, parents, teachers, and stakeholders have raised concerns about the alleged shortcomings of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, specifically regarding the provision of three daily hot meals to SHS students free of charge.

After over seven years of policy implementation, President Akufo-Addo during the 2024 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Tuesday, February 27, emphasised the transformative impact of the Free SHS policy.

He called for an end to arguments against the policy, stating that its success should be acknowledged, and efforts should focus on improving it.

Chief for Tontokrom, Nana Adu Gyamfi has accused the managers of Asanko Gold of intimidating the youth in the area.

He indicated that, their only crime is demanding permit which authorises the company to mine in the town.

Nana Adu Gyamfi comment comes after security officers of the mining firm are reported to have fired a gunshot, leading to the death of a resident.

There has been longstanding tension between Asanko Gold and the locals over alleged trespassing on the legally acquired concessions of the company by the youth, many of whom had resorted to illegal mining for survival due to the lack of decent jobs in the area.

This latest incident follows a protest staged by residents on Friday, demanding the establishment of a Community Mining Scheme to address the ongoing disputes.

Reacting to the development on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Monday, the the chief expressed disappointment.

“The company always intimidates the youth with machomen, soldiers, and police just to take what belongs to the community. They don’t respect us and refuse to bring any letter of permit to that effect” he said.

Furthermore, he stressed, “The company has not informed us that they have land there. We only want residents in the community to find work to do”.

In his view, the community is being threatened and cheated by the company.

“We do not like the conduct of the company. We appeal to the president to immediately intervene and issue a community mining license for us.” he said.

Thirty-six schools will slug it out for the coveted trophy and bragging rights as the best primary school in the Ashanti region, as Luv FM launches the fifth edition of the Primary Schools Quiz. 

 The journey to finding the next champion for the competition has begun with a launch and balloting of contestants at the KNUST campus.

Including defending champions, Divine Mission Academy and two other finalists from last year’s edition, the schools will compete in groups of three. 

In the upcoming six weeks, these 36 primary schools in the Ashanti Region will compete in a series of knowledge-based challenges across various subjects, captivating audiences with their brilliance.

All the 36 schools participated in the launch and balloting of the Luv FM Primary Schools Quiz in Kumasi on March 1.

Speaking at the event, the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, William Kwame Amankrah, lauded the Luv FM’s effort to expose learners to modern skills at early age.

“When quality education is nurtured well, it leads to a transformation that every country strives to achieve. What we are going to launch today fits into the 21st-century goals in education. It will provide learners with the necessary prerequisite knowledge to navigate the global world,” he said.

 Isaac Antwi, Relationships Manager at the Kumasi Business Unit of The Multimedia Group, encouraged contestants to remain resilient in the competition and give of their best shots.

“In the coming weeks, the contesting pupils are expected to treat our listeners and audience to an exciting and intellectually stimulating show of prowess in competing. We expect nothing but the best from the schools that have made it this far,” he said.

Rules of the competition were spelt out to ensure, fairness and smooth running.

Remarkably, fresh entry schools in the competition are coming with the vigor of putting up a resound performance.

“We will win. We have come so far to get here. If we don’t win I won’t be happy. At least we will get to the semi-finals,” said a pupil of Joy Standard School.

“We have trained, learned and released so we can win. And God is with us,” a pupil of Moldgold school said.

The Board of Directors of the African Development Fund approved, in Abidjan on 27 February 2024, $11.96 million Grant to speed up the establishment of the African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation, headquartered in Kigali, Rwanda.

The financial support from the African Development Bank Group’s Regional Public Good window, together with a contribution of $1.93 million from the Rwandan government, is intended to implement the Regional Pharmaceutical Sector Support Project in Rwanda.

“The project should produce considerable benefits (outputs and outcomes) throughout Africa,” stated Aissa Touré Sarr, head of the African Development Bank’s Rwanda country office. “The leading-edge research and technological innovations of the African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation (https://apo-opa.co/49DqOxy) should improve health care outcomes by providing access to advanced medicines and treatments, tackling prevalent diseases and contributing to the continent’s overall health resilience.”

The support from the African Development Fund should help improve access to advanced pharmaceutical technologies and strengthen the regulatory framework of the pharmaceutical industry in Africa.

The African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation, whose creation was approved in June 2022 by the African Development Bank Board of Directors, signed a host country agreement in December 2023, with the government of Rwanda, where it is based.

Given the difficulties that African countries face in accessing technology to manufacture medicines and vaccines in their own countries, this foundation will act as a transparent intermediary that promote and negotiate with pharmaceutical multinationals and other countries in the South on sharing technology, know-how, and patents protected by intellectual property rights. 

The foundation will build the capacity of African pharmaceuticals so that they commit to increasing local production as part of a systematic approach to learning new technologies and bringing production plants up to standard technologically. It will strengthen human and professional competences in the sector and in the R&D ecosystem, as well as in pharmaceutical and vaccine innovation to develop the skills needed for a thriving sector on the continent.

The African Development Fund grant will be used to purchase office equipment — furniture, hardware and software — and to enable the Foundation, to which the Rwandan government granted the status of an international agency, to recruit experts and relevant specialized technical firms to provide a range of specialist health and pharmaceutical services. In addition to administrative and human resources, some experts will be responsible for establishing financial and contract award systems.  

The project will also support information and awareness raising, consultancy services, training manufacturers in good manufacturing processes, and study trips for tacit knowledge transfer. It will also improve the quality and safety of pharmaceutical products, accelerate the implementation of a regional mutual recognition system, in line with harmonizing the regulations on medicine in the East African Community. It will therefore support several activities, including joint evaluations of medical product documentation, joint inspections of good manufacturing practices, signal detection and investigations of medical products, as well as post-marketing surveillance activities of antibiotics.

The African Pharmaceutical Technology Foundation will collaborate closely with the African Union Medicines Agency, Africa CDC, the European Union, the World Health Organization, the World Trade Organization, the Medicines Patent Pool, philanthropic organizations and bilateral and multilateral agencies and institutions.

The first institution of its kind to collaborate with the public and private sectors in Africa, North America, Europe and the rest of the developing world, the foundation has agreed a memorandum of understanding with the European Investment Bank. In addition, it receives substantial support from Germany.
